This study is mainly focused on applying Fuller's ideal gradation curve to theoretically design blended ratio of all solid materials of a reactive powder mortar (RPM), also known as reactive powder concrete (RPC), with the aid of error function, and then to study the effect of fly ash/slag on the performance of RPM. The solid particle is assumed to be spherical particles. Then, the void volume of paste ($V_{\nu}$) and the paste content with specific quality can be obtained. As conclusion, under Fuller's ideal grading curve, the amount of fly ash/slag mixture is higher than that with silica fume along due to it better filled the void within solid particle and obtains higher packing density.

Shape conversion coefficient and equivalent diameter for changing 2D image to 3D image by the Digital Image Process(DIP) have been suggested and modified particle size distribution curve has been showed. Couple of aggregates, like two different marine aggregates and two different crushed stones, have been employed. The measured flatness ratios of each aggregate were 0.30, 0.36, 0.47 and 0.83, respectively. Also, the conversion shape coefficients of each aggregate were determinded as 0.77, 0.78, 0.84 and 0.92. The size of aggregate has been modified by multiplying the shape conversion coefficient and the aggregate size from DIP. The modified gradation curve with modified volume and weight of aggregate has been suggested. Within the limited test results, DIP is one of useful to get the particle shape of aggregate with limitation of measuring errors and to apply the particle distribution curve.
PURPOSES : The use of environmentally friendly construction methods has been recently encouraged to reduce fuel consumption and the effects of global warming. For this purpose, the roller compacted concrete pavement (RCCP) construction method has been developed. RCCP is more environmentally friendly and economically efficient than general concrete by reducing the amount of CO2 generated through the application of a smaller amount of cement. RCCP has a number of advantages such as an easy construction method, low cost, high structural hydration performance, and aggregate interlocking. However, mix design standards and construction guidelines of RCCP are required for domestic application. In addition, a study on aggregate selection, which has an effect on the characteristics of RCCP, is necessary owing to a limited number of researches. Thus, the aggregate effect on the performance of RCCP in securing the required strength and workability was evaluated in consideration of domestic construction. METHODS : Sand and coarse aggregates of both 19mm and 13mm in maximum size were used in this study. Four types of aggregate gradations (s/a = 30%, 58%, and 70% for the sand and coarse aggregate of 19mm in maximum size, and s/a = 50% for a combination of the three types of aggregates) were set up to investigate the effects of the PCA band on the RCC characteristics. The conditions of s/a = 30% and 70% were evaluated to check the gradation effect outside of the recommended band. The conditions of s/a = 58% and 50% were used because they are the optimum combination of the two and three types of aggregates, respectively. RCCP gradation band was suggested gradation with a proper construction method of RCCP by synthetically comparing and analyzing the correlation of optimum water content, maximum dry density, and strength of requirements through its consistency and compaction test. RESULTS : The lower and upper limit lines are insufficient to secure a relatively strong development and workability compared to an aggregate gradation in the RCCP gradation band region. On the other hand, the line in the RCCP gradation band and the 0.45 power curve in the RCCP gradation band region were satisfactory, ensuring the required strength and workability. CONCLUSIONS : The suitable aggregate gradation on RCCP process should meet the RCCP gradation band area; however, fine particles passing through a #60 sieve do not need to be within the recommended gradation band because the influence of this region on such fine particles is small.

The aggregate gradation analysis is a study that evaluates the accuracy of a specific purpose for the aggregate gradation analysis results essential for construction-related major education. This study is to evaluate the effect of aggregate moisture content on aggregate gradation analysis. The change in the moisture content of the aggregate stored in the asphalt plant cold bin and stock piles was monitored for one year, and based on the results, a sample of aggregate with different moisture content was produced. The gradation curve for each aggregate sample was analyzed to evaluate the effect of aggregate moisture content on aggregate gradation analysis. As a result of the gradation evaluation, it was confirmed that as the moisture content increased, the particle size error for particles less than 5 mm increased in the gradation analysis of the oven-dried aggregate, and this error increased as the particle size decreased. In addition, for aggregate particles of 5 mm or more, it was confirmed that the error in gradation analysis rapidly decreased due to the increase in the moisture content. An analysis was performed on the effect of the error in gradation analysis on the management of hot-bin aggregates in asphalt plants. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the minimum aggregate size of the first hot-bin in a general asphalt plant was 2.38 mm or more, so the maximum gradation error due to the non oven-dry aggregate was less than 2%. Therefore, it seems possible to use the results of the gradation analysis of cold bin non oven-dry aggregate for quality management of asphalt mixture production.
This paper focuses on the application of Fuller's ideal gradation curve to theoretically design blended ratio of all solid materials of high performance concrete (HPC), with the aid of error function, and then to study the effect of rice husk ash (RHA) on the performance of HPC. The residual RHA, generated when burning rice husk pellets at temperatures varying from 600 to $800^{\circ}C$, was collected at steam boilers in Vietnam. The properties of fresh and hardened concrete are reviewed. It is possible to obtain the RHA concrete with comparable or better properties than those of the specimen without RHA with lower cement consumption. High flowing concrete designed by the proposed method was obtained without bleeding or segregation. The application of the proposed method for HPC can save over 50% of the consumption of cement and limit the use of water. Its strength efficiency of cement in HPC is 1.4-1.9 times higher than that of the traditional method. Local standards of durability were satisfied at the age of 91 days both by concrete resistivity and ultrasonic pulse velocity.
PURPOSES : To ensure appropriate RCC properties with sufficient strength development and workability, it is necessary to secure a proper level of consistency. It is also necessary to secure maximum dry density, which is an important factor for increasing the interaction of aggregate interlocking, leading to an augmentation of RCC strength. On the other hand, the dry density of RCC can be changed owing to the compaction conditions, water content, and particle size distribution. A Proctor test and a modified Proctor test were used for determining the optimum water content needed to achieve maximum dry density with different amounts of compaction energy. A Vebe test, on the other hand, was used for checking the level of consistency, which is important for producing a workable mixture. METHODS : To confirm the degree of compaction at various particle sizes, RCC mixtures with different sand/aggregate ratios were evaluated. The Proctor test and modified Proctor test were applied to these mixtures to check the effect of the aggregate gradation and compaction energy on the maximum dry density and optimum water content. During each test, three specimens were produced for all types of water content under each aggregate gradation. A compaction curve and the optimum water content and maximum dry density for each aggregate gradation were then obtained for both tests. The range of water content for the appropriate consistency of each aggregate gradation was determined through a Vebe test. The optimum water content was then evaluated based on this range. RESULTS : The compaction test results show that the modified Proctor test provides a higher maximum dry density and lower optimum water content compared with the standard Proctor test. For the modified Proctor test, two cases of aggregate gradation (s/a = 30% and 70%) had the optimum water contents outside of the appropriate water content range. For the standard Proctor test, on the other hand, none of aggregate gradations provided the optimum water content within the desired range. CONCLUSIONS : The modified Proctor test should be used for an RCC mixture design because it can provide adequacy between maximum dry density and consistency. Moreover, the compaction roller has become highly developed for higher compaction energy.
The purpose of this research is particle shape evaluation of aggregate using Digital Image Process(DIP). DIP is very useful to measure the roughness and particle shape of aggregates. Couple of aggregates, like standard sand, two different crushed stones, and two different marine aggregates, have been employed. Shape factors of two different marine aggregates are ranged 0.35 to 0.54. Crushed stone I is 0.74 which is highly flat, but standard sand is elongated shape. Especially, two marine aggregate showed a big difference of width and length which meaned a long shape. There is any significant difference of elongation ratio and flatness for each aggregate with different measuring system, like direct measurement of vernier calipers and DIP method. Shape conversion coefficient and equivalent diameter for changing 2D image to 3D image by the Digital Image Process(DIP) have been suggested and modified particle size distribution curve has been showed.

Since particle size distribution curves are useful to estimate permeability of soil, many formulae for permeability coefficient (k) have been published using the parameter from the curves and factors, such as grain size, particle shape and void ratio of soils. However, the parameters such as $C_c,\;C_u$ and $D_n$ derived from only some discrete points on the curve are insufficient to represent the whole gradation. In this paper fractal dimension which is quite new concept and known to be able to represent the entire curve of particle size distribution is employed for the parameters. An empirical formula of permeability coefficient has been developed with fractal dimension and percent of finer than 0.075 mm. The formula developed from this study has confirmed its effectiveness by a series of laboratory tests and comparison to other published formulae. It is found that permeability coefficient is proportional to fractal dimension and inversely proportional to percent of fines.

This study is to investigate the effect of some physical properties of soil on the compaction. The compaction effect depends upon various factors such as soil type, moisture content, gradation and compaction energy. In this study, with steady compaction energy, the relationships between maximum dry density and moisture content, gradation and consistency were analyzed by soil types. Some results obtained in this study are summarized as follows 1. Generally, the coarser the grain size, the bigger is the maximum dry density and the smaller is the optimum moisture content and its moisture-dry denisty curve is relatively steep. The finner the grain size, the smaller is the max. dry density and the bigger is the opt. moisture content and its moisture-dry density curve is less steep. 2. The relationship between max. dry density (${\gamma}$dmax) and opt. moisture content, void ratio, clay content, percent passing of No. 200 sieve, liquid limit and plastic limit can be represented by the equation ${\gamma}$dmax =ao+a1X(a0>0, a1<0) 3. The relationship between opt. moisture content (Wopt) and clay content, percent passing of No. 200 sieve, liquid limit and plastic limit can be represented by the equation Wopt=a0+a1X(a0>0, al>0). 4. The fact that maximum dry density of the compacted soil is decreased with the increase of the optimum moisture content in any types of soil tested, and the fact that optimum moisture content can be positively correlated with clay content, percent passing of No. 200 sieve, liquid limit and plastic limit of the soil, lead to the conclusion that clay content, percent passing of No. 200 sieve, liquid limit and plastic limit of the soil are direct factors in reduction of the maximum dry density of engineering soil.
The strict regulations on eco-friendly construction and the significant reduction of natural aggregate resources have raised public concerns on the utilization of recycled aggregates for backfilling a power transmission pipeline trench. In this paper, the particle breakage of concrete-based recycled aggregates and river sand has been experimentally studied during the standard compaction test. The applied compaction energy does not significantly break the river sand particles down, and thus causes no change in the compaction curve, thermal resistivity, and particle gradation characteristics. On the other hand, considerable particle breakage was observed in case of the three recycled aggregates. Such particle breakage leads to enhancing compaction effort, reducing thermal resistivity, and changing particle gradation curve with finer particles that are broken during the first compaction. In addition, particle breakage is more dramatic in lower water contents because pore water may damp down the compaction energy.
