  • Experiments on the control of rockfish, Sebastes inermis reproduction were performed by artificially changed water temperature (WT) and photoperiod (PP). The experiments were divided into three conditions; artificial changes of both WT and PP delayed two months against their natural variations (Exp.I), natural WT and PP replaced with artificial light (Exp.II) and natural WT and PP (Exp.III) from September to April (220 days). Initial gonadosomatic index (GSI) in female groups of experiments was 0.2. Female GSI of responded group in Exp.I began to increase from December and reached the highest value in February with 15.0, while the un-responded group kept the lower value during the experimental period. Female GSI of Exp.II and Exp.III reached the highest values in January with 13.0 and 14.7, respectively. Male GSI of Exp,I reached the maximum in October, and that of Exp.II and III reached the maximum in November and then rapidly decreased. Among the experimental groups, male GSI did not show the different tendency. Monthly changes of hepatosomatic index in both sexes showed the reciprocal tendency with those of GSI. The control of WT and PP did not affect on the changes of HSI and condition factor of rockfish. From the histological observations, maturation of ovary was delayed by the changes of WT and PP, but that of testis was not influenced. Judging from the above results, the maturation and parturition of female rockfish could be delayed one or two months by artificial changes of WT and PP.

  • Annual reproductive cycle of Siganus canaliculatus was studied based on monthly variation of gonadosomatic index (GSI) and histological changes of gonads. Samples were monthly collected by a set net along the southern coast of Jeju Island, Korea from January to December, 1996. Variation of the monthly mean GSI values showed similar trends in female and male. The GSI values increased from June and reached a peak in the spawning season in July $(9.65{\pm}1.96\;in\;females,\;10.00{\pm}4.27\;in\;males)$, and decreased rapidly thereafter. Female hepatosomatic index (HSI) values ranged from $1.26{\pm}0.22\;(in\;April)\;to\;2.34{\pm}0.39$ (in July), and male HSI values ranged from $1.27{\pm}0.21\;(in\;April)\;to\;1.87{\pm}0.30$ (in October). Annual reproductive cycle was classified into the following successive stages: in female, growing stage (from February to June), mature stage (from June to July), ripe and spawning stage (from July to August), recovery stage (from August to March); and in male, growing stage (from January to June), mature stage (from June to July), ripe and spent stage (from July to August), and recovery stage (from August to April). Based on these data, this species has a group-synchronous oocyte development and one spawning season a year.

  • Reproductive biology (sexual maturity and reproductive cycle) of starry flounder Platichthys stellatus were examined by histological methods. From March 2004 to February 2005, 144 females and males were sampled. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) of female and male were peaked in May and February, respectively. Monthly changes of hepatosomotic index (HSI) showed a negative correlationwith those of the GSI. Changes of condition factor (CF) in female were correlated with gonad maturation, while that of male were no difference all the year round. Based on monthly GSI and gonadal development the reproductive cycle of starry flounder could be divided into four stages: growing stage (September to November), maturation stage (September to February), ripe and spent stage (March to May), and recovery and resting stage (June to August). Biological minimum size of female was 1,074 g. The relationship between fecundity (F) and body weight (BW) of the fish was expressed as $F\;=\;455.86BW^{1.2006}$.

  • This study revealed the reproductive biology of the Olive Flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, in the middle of the West Sea of Korea. We collected samples using stow net and drag net fisheries in coastal waters from January to December 2023. Monthly gonodosomatic index and maturity stage results showed that the spawning period was April to June for females and March to June for males. Females grew faster than the males. The fecundity ranged from 90,387 to 994,658 number of eggs, and the relationship between TL and fecundity (F) was 0.01TL2.4896 (R2=0.2862). The gonadosomatic index (GSI) exhibited its highest values in May for females and in March for males, coinciding with the primary spawning period. The total length required for 50% sexual maturity was determined through a logistic regression model and the females was estimated to be 49.4 cm and the males was estimated to be 36.5 cm.

  • The reproductive cycle of the bitterling, Rhodeus uyekii was studied to observe the annual variations of gonadosomatic index(GSI), size frequency distribution of egg, ovipositor length and histological changes of gonad. GSI began to increase from February when the water temperature started to increase, and reached the maximum value in May, whereas it began to decrease from July and reached the minimum value in August which in the highest water temperature season. It began to incerase again but showed low value from September to November. The GSI remained stable thereafter. Monthly changes in GSI, ovipositor length, frequency of egg diameter and gonadal histology showed that the annual reproductive cycle was classified into the following successive phases : primary growing phase from September to November, quiescent phase in December, secondary growing and mature phase from January to February, ripe and spawning phase from March to June, and recovery and resting phase from July to August.

  • Effects of intraperitoneal administration of LHRH-a (luteinizing hormone releasing hormone analogue), pimozide and HCG (human chorionic gonadortropin) were studied on ovulation in the bullhead, Pseudobagrus. fulvidraco. Ovulatin was induced in 71.4, 80 and 100% by injection of HCG 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 IU/kg of body weight, respectively. Also, the majority of fish injected with LHRH-a in the presence or absence of pimozide were ovulated. The ovulating rates in fish injected with LHRH-a alone showed 50, 75 and 100% at a dose 200, 300 and $400^{\mu}$g/kg, respectively. Pimozide enhanced the activity of LHRH-a at $300^{\mu}$g/kg plus pimozide at 1 mg/kg. Pimozide alone was ineffective in inducing ovulation of P. fulvidraco. There were no significant differences in gonadosomatic index (GSI) and pseudo-GSI values among the groups treated with HCG, LHRH-a and LHRH-a plus pimozide (P>0.05). The latency time groups treated with HCG was 17~22 hours, and the group injected with LHRH-a alone and/or in combination with pimozide was ovulated within 23~29 hours.

  • Regulation of copulation and parturition of black rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli were induced by artificially controlled photoperiod and temperature. for the treated group, daylength of copulation and parturition period was maintained at 9L : 15D and 14L : l0D, respectively. Temperature was maintained at 12~13$^{\circ}C$ during the copulation period, and at 14~15$^{\circ}C$ during the parturition period. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) of male was low 0.12 from January to August and peak to 1.36~0.10 during November in the control group but 1.27 ~ 0.05 during October in treated group. GSI of female was about 1.82 from January to November 1996 and reached the maximum of 46.5 ~ 5.72 during April 1997 in the control group but 42.0~4.24 during february 1997 in the treated group. The pattern of ovary and testis development did not much differ between the treated and control groups. However, the copulation and parturition of black rockfish could be advance 2~3 months by controlling photoperiod and temperature.

  • Reproductive cycle, gonadal development and the spawning period of the Korean anchovy Coilia nasus were investigated by histologhical observations. Samples were collected at the coastal area of Geumgang dyke which is connected to Gunsan and Janghang, Korea, from February 2002 to January 2003. C. nasus is dioecious; the ovary consists of a pair of saccular structure with many ovarian lobules, and the testis consists of a pair of lobular structure with many testicular lobules and connected to the posterior seminal vesicle. Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) began to increase in April when seawater temperature increased and reached the maximum in June when the ovary was getting mature, the summer season of longer day length with higher water temperature. The reproductive cycle can be classified into five successive stage in females: early growing stage (February to March), late growing stage (March to April), mature stage (May to June), ripe and spent stage (June to July), and recovery and resting stage (July to January): in males, the cycle can be divided into four successive stages; growing stage (February to April), mature stage (May to July), ripe and spent (June to July), and recovery and resting stages (July to January). According to the frequency distributions of egg diameters in the spawning season. C. nasus is presumed to be summer spawning species and polycyclic species to spawn 2 times or more during the spawning season.

  • This study investigated the reproductive ecology and spawning of Hoplobrotula armata on the coast of Jejudo Island. Samples were collected from February to December 2019 and February to December 2020, with a total of 2,634 samples. The results of the investigation showed that total length (TL) ranged from 22.0 cm to 68.8 cm, and the body weight (BW) ranged from 66.5 g to 3,553.9 g. According to the development process of gonads and the gonadosomatic index (GSI), the spawning period of H. armata was from July to October. The relationship between TL and BW was BW = 0.0024TL3.3278 in females and BW = 0.0035TL3.2162 in males. The sex ratios of surveyed female to male H. armata was 1:0.71, with more females. At 50%, 75%, and 97.5%, the group maturities of H. armata were as follows: Females, 39.9 cm, 42.7 cm, and 49.4 cm; males, 37.6 cm, 40.4 cm, and 46.9 cm, respectively. According to monthly GSI and gametocyte (ovarian, testis) development stage observations of H. armata on the coast of Jejudo Island, they spawn once a year and are presumed to be summer spawners.
