Global Periodic Solutions in a Delayed Predator-Prey System with Holling II Functional Response

  • We consider a delayed predator-prey system with Holling II functional response. Firstly, the paper considers the stability and local Hopf bifurcation for a delayed prey-predator model using the basic theorem on zeros of general transcendental function, which was established by Cook etc.. Secondly, special attention is paid to the global existence of periodic solutions bifurcating from Hopf bifurcations. By using a global Hopf bifurcation result due to Wu, we show that the local Hopf bifurcation implies the global Hopf bifurcation after the second critical value of delay. Finally, several numerical simulations supporting the theoretical analysis are given.

  • Global cosmetic corporations take about 40% of Korean cosmetic market in a short period, and will expand their share rate. Furthermore, Korean main cosmetic market channel has been changed from cosmetic shop to diverse channels in accordance with Korean consumer's trends. Therefore, Korean cosmetic corporations must response to the global competitors and the changed market factors simultaneously with an effective business strategy. This paper suggests the effective business strategy to keep and raise the market share against the global cosmetic corporations, and response to the changed market situation.

  • Cross-border supply chains undergone complexity in the global trade process, unpredictability and continually evolving regulations and information requirements. Under these circumstances, longer lead time inhibiting quick response to market demands, unanticipated supply chain costs eroding product cost savings, compliance and documentation errors causing delays and fines are challenging global trade companies when they execute global business. These problems are mainly caused by unautomated, unintegrated process which lead to longer and more unpredictable lead times, slower cash flow, cost overruns, and ultimately lower profits and less satisfied customers. Complex and unpredictable global trade environment requires global trade companies of global trade management functions to automate and control this complex environment for driving out cost, time and risk from their business. Global trade management allows cost savings, supply chain efficiencies and improved compliance through improving global supply chain visibility, facilitating cash flow by supply chain financing, enhancing supply chain security and risk management.

  • In recent engineering, the designer has become more and more dependent on computer simulation. But defining exact model using computer simulation is too expensive and time consuming in the complicate systems. Thus, designers often use approximation models, which express the relation between design variables and response variables. These models are called metamodel. In this paper, we introduce one of the metamodel, named Kriging. This model employs an interpolation scheme and is developed in the fields of spatial statistics and geostatistics. This class of interpolating model has flexibility to model response data with multiple local extreme. By reason of this multi modality, we can't use any gradient-based optimization algorithm to find global extreme value of this model. Thus we have to introduce global optimization algorithm. To do this, we introduce DE(Differential Evolution). DE algorithm is developed by Ken Price and Rainer Storn, and it has recently proven to be an efficient method for optimizing real-valued multi-modal objective functions. This algorithm is similar to GA(Genetic Algorithm) in populating points, crossing over, and mutating. But it introduces vector concept in populating process. So it is very simple and easy to use. Finally, we show how we determine Kriging metamodel and find global extreme value through two mathematical examples.

BIFURCATIONS OF A PREDATOR-PREY SYSTEM WITH WEAK ALLEE EFFECTS

  • We formulate and study a predator-prey model with non-monotonic functional response type and weak Allee effects on the prey, which extends the system studied by Ruan and Xiao in [Global analysis in a predator-prey system with nonmonotonic functional response, SIAM J. Appl. Math. 61 (2001), no. 4, 1445-1472] but containing an extra term describing weak Allee effects on the prey. We obtain the global dynamics of the model by combining the global qualitative and bifurcation analysis. Our bifurcation analysis of the model indicates that it exhibits numerous kinds of bifurcation phenomena, including the saddle-node bifurcation, the supercritical and the subcritical Hopf bifurcations, and the homoclinic bifurcation, as the values of parameters vary. In the generic case, the model has the bifurcation of cusp type of codimension 2 (i.e., Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation).

A Robust Optimization Using the Statistics Based on Kriging Metamodel

  • Robust design technology has been applied to versatile engineering problems to ensure consistency in product performance. Since 1980s, the concept of robust design has been introduced to numerical optimization field, which is called the robust optimization. The robustness in the robust optimization is determined by a measure of insensitiveness with respect to the variation of a response. However, there are significant difficulties associated with the calculation of variations represented as its mean and variance. To overcome the current limitation, this research presents an implementation of the approximate statistical moment method based on kriging metamodel. Two sampling methods are simultaneously utilized to obtain the sequential surrogate model of a response. The statistics such as mean and variance are obtained based on the reliable kriging model and the second-order statistical approximation method. Then, the simulated annealing algorithm of global optimization methods is adopted to find the global robust optimum. The mathematical problem and the two-bar design problem are investigated to show the validity of the proposed method.

Preservice Elementary Teachers' Understandings of the Key Concepts related to the Greenhouse Effect (초등 예비교사들의 온실효과 관련 핵심 개념들에 대한 이해)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary student teachers' conceptions about the mechanism of the greenhouse effect, the greenhouse gases, the global warming, and their learning experiences of the greenhouse effect and the global warming. Participants were 82 student teachers in their second year of studies (science education: n=28, not science education: n=27) and in their fourth year of studies (science education: n=27). The open-ended questionnaire was used to examine the teachers' spontaneous ideas depicted by their drawings and/or writings. The results of this study are as follows: First, the student teachers' scientific response rate about key concepts related to the mechanism of the greenhouse effect was low (6.1%~28.0%); Second, although there are various greenhouse gases, it was only carbon dioxide that the student teacher's response rate was more than 80%; Third, only 17.1% of the student teachers clearly distinguished the greenhouse effect and the global warming; Fourth, there was a tendency that the student teacher group in the fourth year of studies and science education showed higher scientific response rate about the concepts than the other two groups.

  • Polo-like kinase-1 (Plk1) belongs to a family of serine-threonine kinases and plays a critical role in mitotic progression. Plk1 involves in the initiation of mitosis, centrosome maturation, bipolar spindle formation, and cytokinesis, well-reported as traditional functions of Plk1. In this review, we discuss the role of Plk1 during DNA damage response beyond the functions in mitotsis. When DNA is damaged in cells under various stress conditions, the checkpoint mechanism is activated to allow cells to have enough time for repair. When damage is repaired, cells progress continuously their division, which is called checkpoint recovery. If damage is too severe to repair, cells undergo apoptotic pathway. If damage is not completely repaired, cells undergo a process called checkpoint adaptation, and resume cell division cycle with damaged DNA. Plk1 targets and regulates many key factors in the process of damage response, and we deal with these subjects in this review.

  • In this paper, a class of more general delayed viral infection model with lytic immune response is proposed by Song et al.[1] ([Journal of Mathematical Analysis Application 373 (2011), 345-355). We derive the basic reproduction numbers $R_0$ and $R_0^*$ 0 for the viral infection, and establish that the global dynamics are completely determined by the values of $R_0$ and $R_0^*$. If $R_0{\leq}1$, the viral-free equilibrium $E_0$ is globally asymptotically stable; if $R_0^*{\leq}1$ < $R_0$, the immune-free equilibrium $E_1$ is globally asymptotically stable; if $R_0^*$ > 1, the chronic-infection equilibrium $E_2$ is globally asymptotically stable by using the method of Lyapunov function.

  • Several damping materials have been employed to reduce the vibration of structures. While it is important to estimate the damping matrix when analyzing damped composite structures using the finite element method (FEM), at present, there is no FEM program that can correctly estimate the damping matrix. In this paper, a new global curve-fitting method is proposed for identifying the system parameters of non-proportional damping structures using a frequency response function. An experimental test for a cantilever beam attached damping material was carried out to verify the performance of the method proposed in this study.
