It is expected that the global market for vessel repair and remodeling will grow up to the scale of about 25 billion dollars by 2023. Korea's shipbuilding industry is leading the world with its international competitiveness in design and production technology. The actual status of vessel repair industry, however, is poor as there are only two or three companies for vessel repair that can deal with large vessels in the area of Gyeongnam. The reason is that civil complaints are filed severely about environmental problems and environment-related regulations are so strict that it is fairly hard to get governmental approval for the operation of a vessel repair workplace. Domestic vessel repair companies mainly target small- and medium-sized vessels. There are only few workplaces that can carry out regular examination or repair work on large vessels such as LNG vessels, and due to the high price of vessel repair, most of the domestic repair work on large vessels including LNG vessels tends to be snatched by markets in Southeast Asia or China. Despite the tremendous domestic demand of Korea that has established the world's first shipbuilding industry and world's sixth biggest harbor infrastructure, its vessel repair industry can be said to be in very poor condition. In order to vitalize vessel repair industry, this study is aimed to analyze the environmental influence of vessel repair workplaces in Gyeongnam where vessel repair companies are concentrated and suggest standard processes by analyzing vessel repair processes precisely.
Purpose - "Trade Facilitation" aims the easier flow of trade across borders, driven not only by effective customs administration, the efficiency of appropriate authorities, but also by telecommunications, the quality of infrastructures and competent logistics. Facilitating trade will help lower trade development costs as well as improve economic development and enhance economic benefits for emerging economies at a time when imports and exports are sent in and out across borders several times in the form of intermediate and final products. Not only that, globalization is being accelerated, which in turn increases competitiveness and this makes logistics one of the key factors when it comes to international trade. Highly efficient logistics services promote product movement, ensure product safety and delivery speed, and reduce trade costs between countries. The purpose of this study is, by using the LPI indices based on gravity model estimates, to analyze the impact of each LPI component on trade with the 20 biggest exporting countries of Northeast Asian countries-Korea, Japan, and China-which account for 19.05% of global exports. Design/methodology - Also, this study statistically analyzes the impact of trade on Northeast Asian countries' top 20 exporting countries, using the LPI indices relevant to Trade Facilitation based on the gravity model estimates. Findings - As a result, it was turned out that the distance, GDP, and the LPI components have relevant impact on the trade exports of all three countries but demonstrated little relation to the demographic perspective. Originality/value - The study also found we can increase the trade volume by improving three countries' trade partners' LPI indices since Korea, Japan, and China share most of their 20 biggest trade partners.
In the age of global competition, city brand is a significant element for establishing a city's competitiveness. City branding is the process of building a storytelling about cities' content. Among the various contents that differentiate cities, this study seeks to discuss the role of an event and a city brand in the process of city branding based on the city marketing and event tourism literatures. This research uses grounded theory and a case study to examine Seoul exploring the changes in the Hi Seoul Festival and the Hi Seoul city brand over the last two decades. The qualitative research includes a secondary data analysis based on case studies from domestic and foreign regions and their festivals. The analytical results indicted three limitations: inconsistency, a lack of identity, and political leverage. Based on the limitations, this study discusses the importance of the connection between city identity and event content, suggesting implications for moving forward toward a stable Seoul city branding strategy for the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

In this study, the government's investment, laws, regulations, and difficulties related to IoT radio technology in the energy and medical fields are mainly analyzed. Also, plans for dissemination, technology preemption, and commercialization are derived to enhance global competitiveness. Research on ways to secure and predict radio wave application technologies in energy and medical fields, and to alleviate barriers to entry for new business operators. Analyzes the efficiency of support measures using expert groups in each energy and medical field, analyzes the utilization value of accumulated data, and proposes mid- to long-term promotion systems and support measures, as well as utilization measures of data held by external agencies related to radio waves.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to identify priorities for the 4th Comprehensive Plan for Korean Medicine Development using Delphi and AHP techniques. Methods : This study uses Delphi-AHP method to first, select the target priority policy based on the policy content of the 4th Comprehensive Plan. In addition, two surveys on the priorities were conducted to reach consensus between experts. The main results of the first survey were also provided to experts participating in the second survey to help form expert consensus. Finally, the final policy priority was chosen based on the second survey result. Results : Survey results showed that of the 39 policies in the 4th Comprehensive Plan, "improve the accessibility of Korean medicines," was the most important goal. This was followed by "support for Korean medicine R&D from clinical research to industrialization," "provide foundation for a pilot project that provides customized medical services" and "strengthen the public medicine function of Korean medicine by expanding the its infrastructure in national and public hospitals." Conclusion : The results showed that capacity building of Korean medicine in primary care, improvement of the health insurance system, and research centered on industrialization are relatively more important goals, while the need to enhance global competitiveness was much less important. These key points can serve as a reference when formulating the 5th Comprehensive Plan for Korean Medicine Development in the future.

As a means to cope with the climate change crisis caused by global warming, automobile manufacturers continue to make efforts to use the driving energy of vehicles as electricity. As a result, parts industry such as battery, motor, and controller are attracting attention. China is often seen in large cities, with electric vehicles such as electric bicycles, electric motorcycles, and small electric vehicles popularized and commercialized, mainly in large cities. However, small electric vehicles are not popular in Korea, which is why the country's topography is high in hills. In order to drive the hilly domestic roads, power performance including vehicle climbing ability should be improved. In order to improve the power performance and the climbing capacity of small electric vehicles, the capacity of the motor should be increased. However, when the performance of the motor is improved, the weight of the motor becomes heavy and the price competitiveness is likely to decrease. In addition, in order to operate a high-performance motor, the power consumption of the battery is rapidly increased, so various problems must be solved. In order to commercialize a small electric vehicle for one or two people who do not emit harmful exhaust gas to the human body in a hilly domestic terrain, it is effective to have a separate transmission system. In this study, we were conducted dynamometer test to produce a continuously variable transmission(CVT) system prototype using a spring that can be applied to a small electric vehicle and to install a CVT system prototype manufactured in a small electric vehicle. The dynamometer test results showed that the maximum speed performance, acceleration performance, and climbing performance were improved.

As the uncertainty of technology development and market needs increases due to changes in the global business environment, the interest and demand for R&D activities of individual companies are increasing. To respond to these environmental changes, technology commercialization players are paying great attention to enhancing the qualitative competitiveness of R&D. In particular, R&D companies in the marine and fishery sector face many difficulties compared to other industries. For example, the R&D environment is barren, it is challenging to secure R&D human resources, and it is facing a somewhat more difficult environment compared to other sectors, such as the difficulty in maintaining R&D continuity due to the turnover rate of researchers. In this study, based on the empirical data and patent status of private companies closely related to the R&D technology status, big data analysis, and simulation analysis methods were used to identify the relative position of individual companies' R&D capabilities and industrial perspectives. In this study, based on industrial evidence and patent applications closely related to the R&D technology status, the R&D capabilities of individual companies were evaluated using extensive data analysis and simulation analysis methods, and a statistical test was performed to analyze if there were differences in capabilities from an industrial point of view. At this time, the industries to be analyzed were based on all sectors, the maritime industry, the fisheries industry, and the maritime industry integration sector. In conclusion, it was analyzed that there was a certain level of difference in the R&D capabilities of individual companies in each industry sector, Therefore when developing a future R&D capability system, it was confirmed that it was necessary to separate the population for each industry and establish a strategy.

As digital transformation accelerates, the proportion of non-face-to-face services in financial services is also increasing. Recently, user experience has emerged to secure competitiveness in mobile services, and analysis techniques to improve user experience have emerged. User review data, one of the data used for quantitative evaluation, contains a lot of unnecessary information, which is time-consuming to derive improvement directions. Therefore, this study aims to develop a UX analysis system based on the hierarchy of UX needs by using a cosine similarity algorithm and analyze user review data of Kookmin Bank, Woori Bank, Kakao Bank, and Toss for verification. This study proved that the developed UX analysis system is a system that can effectively analyze UX through the analysis of user review data. The system of this study is expected to be easily used to identify improvement plans for the hierarchy of UX needs in an agile organization that needs to quickly reflect customer feedback.
Purpose - Recent issues such as vessel enlargement, strengthening of environmental regulations, and port smartization are expected to increase costs and intensify competition in the port industry. In the new normal era, when external growth has reached its limit, the efficient operation of ports is becoming indispensable for achieving sustainable growth. This study aims to identify the determinants of inefficiency by examining the cost structure and efficiency of container terminals in Korea and furthermore propose the political implications to derive the maximization of efficiency. Design/methodology - This study estimates the cost function of container terminal operators and identifies the efficiency of container terminals using stochastic cost frontier (SCF) in the first stage. In the second step, the SCF results are compared with the data envelopment analysis (DEA). Last, this paper proposes efficiency determinants on container terminal operation to establish appropriate strategies. Out of the 29 container terminal operators in South Korea, 13 operators participated in the survey. The translog cost function was estimated utilizing a total of 116 observations collected over the 2007-2017 period. Findings - Empirical analysis shows that economies of scale exist in Korea's container ports, which provides a rationale for the government's policy to establish the global terminal operator by integrating small terminal operators to enhance competitiveness. In addition, as a result of the determinants analysis, container throughput, weight of direct employment costs, and labour cost share have positive effects on improving cost efficiency, while inefficiency increases as the length of quay increases. More specifically, cost efficiency improves as the proportion of direct employment costs to outsourcing service costs increases. Originality/value - This study contributes to analyzing the inefficiency factors of container terminals through efficiency analysis with respect to a cost function. In addition, this study proposes the practical and political implications, such as establishing a long-term manpower pool, the application of the hybrid liner terminal system, and the construction of a statistical data system, to improve the cost inefficiency of terminal operators.

The interest in greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted from all industries is emerging as a very important issue worldwide. This is affecting not only the global warming, but also the environmentally friendly competitiveness of the industry. The fisheries sector is increasingly interested in greenhouse gas emissions also due to the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015. Korean industry and government are also making a number of effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions so far, but the effort to reduce GHG in the fishery sector is insufficient compared to other fields. Especially, the investigation on the GHG emissions from Korean fisheries did not carry out extensively. The studies on GHG emissions from Korean fishery are most likely dealt with the GHG emissions by fishery classification so far. However, the forthcoming research related to GHG emissions from fisheries is needed to evaluate the GHG emission level by species to prepare the adoption of Environmental labels and declarations (ISO 14020). The purpose of this research is to investigate which degree of GHG emitted to produce the species (swimming crab and snow crab) from various fisheries. Here, we calculated the GHG emission to produce the species from the fisheries using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method. The system boundary and input parameters for each process level are defined for LCA analysis. The fuel use coefficients of the fisheries for the species are also calculated according to the fuel type. The GHG emissions from sea activities by the fisheries will be dealt with. Furthermore, the GHG emissions for producing the unit weight species and annual production are calculated by fishery classification. The results will be helpful to establish the carbon footprint of seafood in Korea.
