  • A photovoltaic array exhibits several local and single global maximum power points under partial shading conditions. To track the global maximum power point precisely, a novel global maximum power point tracking scheme is proposed in this paper. In the proposed scheme, robustness of the tracking performance has been improved by enhancing searching profile. In addition, the paper addresses the tracking failure condition, and provides the experimental verification with several simulation and experimental results.

  • The photovoltaic module has the characteristic that the output power varies according to the amount of insolation. If partial shading occurs in an environment composed of an array, a number of local maximum power points (LMPPs) may be generated according to the shading state. Photovoltaic arrays require global maximum power point tracking due to variations in output characteristics caused by solar radiation and temperature. Conventional algorithms, such as P&O and Incond, do not follow the global maximum power point in a partial shaded solar array. In this study, we propose a technique to follow the global maximum power point by using the correlation of voltage, current, and power in solar arrays. The proposed control technique 2qw validated through simulation and experiments by constructing a 2-kW solar system.

  • This paper presents an improved maximum power point tracking method that can fast track the global maximum power point (GMPP) for a photovoltaic system under partial shading conditions. The proposed method combines the advantages of the maximum power trapezium (MPT) method and the search-skip-judge method to minimize the tracking voltage intervals. Thus, the proposed method can quickly track the GMPP by skipping unnecessary tracking voltage intervals. The superiority of the proposed method is verified through simulation results in the MATLAB/Simulink and experimental real-time operation results with the hardware-in-the-loop simulation. The simulation and experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method has a faster tracking time than the MPT method under various partial shading conditions.

  • The power-voltage (P-V) curve of photovoltaic (PV) arrays connected in parallel to bypass diodes would have several local maximum power points (LMPP) under partial shading conditions (PSC). Conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods fail to search for the global maximum power point (MPP) because the searched peak point may remain at the LMPP on the P-V curve under PSC. This study proposes an improved MPPT algorithm to ensure that PV arrays operate at global maximum power point (GMPP) under PSC. The proposed algorithm is based on a critical study and a series of observations of PV characteristics under PSC. Results show the regularity of voltage interval between LMPPs. The algorithm has the advantages of rapidly reaching GMPP, maintaining stability, and recovering GMPP quickly when the operating condition changes. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

  • This study compares the performance of artificial intelligence (AI)-based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods under partial shading conditions in a photovoltaic generation system. Although many studies on AI-based MPPT have been conducted, few studies comparing the tracking performance of various AI-based global MPPT methods seem to exist in the literature. Therefore, this study compares four representative AI-based global MPPT methods including fuzzy logic control (FLC), particle swarm optimization (PSO), grey wolf optimization (GWO), and genetic algorithm (GA). Each method is theoretically analyzed in detail and compared through simulation studies with MATLAB/Simulink under the same conditions. Based on the results of performance comparison, PSO, GWO, and GA successfully tracked the global maximum power point. In particular, the tracking speed of GA was the fastest among the investigated methods under the given conditions.

  • In order to increase the power generation efficiency of the photovoltaic system, a new algorithm that can follow the maximum power point of the photovoltaic power generation system having nonlinear output characteristics is proposed. Conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms such as Perturbation and Observation (P&O) and InCond (Increment and Conductance) schemes can not find the global maximum power point at a plurality of pole points in the unmatched state of unbalanced PV modules. However, even if the global maximum power point is found at a plurality of pole points, the global maximum power that can not be the real maximum power by the photovoltaic generation system. In order to solve this problem, a few PV companies propose installing several small PV inverters instead of if big one. However, since this will require additional costs, we herein propose a Multi-MPPT system using individual 3-point MPPT to track true MPPT at a plurality of pole points in the unmatched state of unbalanced PV modules.

  • Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) under the partial shading condition is a challenging research topic for photovoltaic systems. Shaded photo-voltaic module result in complex peak patterns on the power versus voltage curve which can misguide classical MPPT algorithms. Thus, various kinds of global MPPT algorithms have been studied. These have typically consisted of partial shading detection, global peak search and MPPT. The conventional partial shading detection algorithm aims to detect all of the occurrences of partial shading. This results in excessive execution of global peak searches and discontinuous operation of the MPPT. This in turn, reduces the achievable power for the PV module. Based on a theoretical investigation of power verse voltage curve patterns under various partial shading conditions, it is realized that not all the occurrences of partial shadings require a global peak search. Thus, an intelligent partial shading detection algorithm that provides exact identification of global peak search necessity is essential for the efficient utilization of solar energy resources. This paper presents a new partial shading determinant algorithm utilizing adaptive threshold levels. Conventional methods tend to be too sensitive to sharp shading patterns but insensitive to smooth patterns. However, the proposed algorithm always shows superb performance, regardless of the partial shading patterns.

  • Since solar cells have non-linear voltage-current output characteristics, Photovoltaic systems require the Maximum Power Point Tracking(MPPT) function. For this reason, a large number of MPPT techniques have been studied. However, the conventional MPPT techniques may fail to track the maximum power point when partial shading occurs in the solar cell array due to its characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to research the MPPT technique that can follow the maximum power point in the partial shadow condition. In this paper, the characteristics of solar cell arrays in partial shadowing are analyzed and the MPPT technique which can follow the maximum power point in partial shadow condition has been proposed. To validate the proposed MPPT method, simulation and experimentation results are provided.

  • Conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods are ineffective under partially shaded conditions because multiple local maximum can be exhibited on power-voltage characteristic curve. This study proposes an improved cuckoo search (ICS) MPPT method after investigating the cuckoo search (CS) algorithm applied in solving multiple MPPT. The algorithm eliminates the random step in the original CS algorithm, and the conception of low-power, high-power, normal and marked zones are introduced. The adaptive step adjustment is also realized according to the different stages of the nest position. This algorithm adopts the large step in low-power and marked zones to reduce search time, and a small step in high-power zone is used to improve search accuracy. Finally, simulation and experiment results indicate that the promoted ICS algorithm can immediately and accurately track the global maximum under partially shaded conditions, and the array output efficiency can be improved.
