  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of multiwall carbon nanotube functionalized with carboxyl group (MWCNT-COOH) on the mechanical properties of dental glassionomer cement (GIC). MWCNT-COOH was prepared by the acid oxidative method. The MWCNT-COOH was incorporated into a commercial GIC powder or liquid at 0.5 wt% or 1.0 wt%. The net setting time of the cements was measured in accordance with ISO 9917 (Dental water-based cement). Specimens for compressive strength ($4mm{\varphi}{\times}6mm$), diametral tensile strength ($6mm{\varphi}{\times}4mm$) and flexure strength with modulus ($2mm{\times}2mm{\times}25mm$) were prepared by mixing with the cement liquid and kept in water bath of $(37{\pm}1)^{\circ}C$. Mechanical tests were conducted in 1 d, 7 d, and 14 days at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/min. Compressive strength of GIC mixed with 0.5 wt% MWCNT-COOH increased significantly at 7 d. However, overall mechanical properties of GIC modified with MWCNT were not significantly increased with a delayed setting time, in comparison with control cement. Overall results indicated that the MWCNT/GIC composite cements showed a limited strengthening effect for dental glassionomer cement.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of glassionomer cement against cut dentin surface which was treated with various surface cleaning agents. 48 freshly extracted human 3rd molars were ground flat through the enamel into the dentin using 600 grit silicone carbide paper under a flow of water. The were divided into four groups by the following cleaning procedure on cut dentin surface; Group I : No surface treatment after grinding with 600 grit silicone carbide paper as control group Group II : Surface treatment with 50% citric acid for 30 seconds. Group III : Surface treatment with 37% phosphoric acid for 30 seconds. Group IV : Surface treatment with 10% poly acrylic acid for 30 seconds. The specimens in 4 groups were immersed in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours before testing after cleanising with water-spray and drying with air. Bond strength was measured with Instron Universal Testing Machine (Autograph S-100, Shimadzu, Kyoto, JAPAN). The results were as follows: 1. The bond strengths of group II, III & IV were not seemed to be shown more significant improvement than a group I. 2. The bond strengths in groups which were treated with 50% citric acid, 37% phosphoric acid and 10% polycrylic acid, were ranked 24.70kg/$cm^2$, 22.02kg/$cm^2$ and 31.13kg/$cm^2$, but its difference was not significant, statistically.

  • Procedures for treatment of molar furcation invasion defects range from open flap debridement, apically repositioned flap surgery, hemisection, tunneling or extraction, to regenerative therapies using bone grafting or guided tissue regenerative therapy, or a combination of both. Several clinical evaluations using regenerative techniques have reported the potential for osseous repair of treated furcation invasions. Regenerative treatment of maxillary molars are more difficult due to the multiple root anatomy and multiple furcation entrances therefore, purpose of this study was to evaluated histologically self-curing glass-ionomer cement and light-curing glass-ionomer cement as a barrier in the treatment of a bi-furcated maxillary premolar. Five adult beagle dogs were used in this experiment. With intrasulcular and crestal incision, mucoperiosteal flap was elevated. Following decortication with 1/2 high speed round bur, degree II furcation defect was made on maxillary third(P3), forth(P4) and fifth(P5) premolar. 2 month later experimental group were self-curing glassionomer cement and light-curing glassionomer cement. After 4, 8 weeks, the animals were sacrificed by vascular perfusion. Tissue block was excised including the tooth and prepared for light microscope with Gomori's trichrome staining. Results were as follows. 1. In all experiment group, there were not epithelial down growth and glass ionomer cement were encapsulated connective tissue. 2. In 4 weeks experiment I group slighly infiltrated inflammatory cells but not disturb the new bone or new cementum formation. 3. In 8 weeks, experiment groups I, II were encapsulated fine connective tissue. 4. Therefore glass-ionomer cement filling to the grade III maxillary furcations with multiple root anatomy and multiple furcation entrances were possible clinical methods and this technique is useful method for Maxillary furcation involvement.

  • This paper reviewed the following subheadings and a few selected references in each section were discussed: ${\cdot}$ Sealant placed over caries; is it possible? Initial caries which is not sticky during proving is possible to be placed with sealants. ${\cdot}$ Prophylaxis of fissure; which method is most effective? Mechanical preparation with fissurotomy or resin polishing bur is one of the most effective method to clean the pit and fissure. ${\cdot}$ Glassionomer cement as a sealant; GIC, wheather it released fluoride or not, cannot be as cost-effective as resin-based sealants. ${\cdot}$ Sealant products; Color(white vs opaque), fluoride(containing vs not), filler component(filled vs non-filled) do not influenced the quality and retention of sealants. ${\cdot}$ Use of intermediate bonding agent to improve retention; Intermediate bonding may increase the retention rate of sealants ${\cdot}$ Penetration method of sealants; Several methods including waiting before light curing are recommended.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of incorporated nano HA on the demineralization resistance and bonding strength of LC GIC in comparison with micro HA. Fuji II LC GIC was used as the control group and a base material for experimental groups. Two experimental groups were prepared. One was prepared by adding 15% micro HA to LC GIC by weight ratio (Exp. 1), and the other was prepared by adding 15% nano HA instead (Exp. 2). According to the results, the following conclusions could be obtained. 1. Observing under the CLSM, the control group showed thicker enamel demineralization layer than in the experimental groups, and the Exp. 2 group showed the thinnest demineralization layer. 2. In SEM analysis, there was greater enamel demineralization in the control group. The Exp. 2 group was more resistant to demineralization compared to the Exp. 1 group. 3. The bonding strength was found to be in the increasing order of control, Exp. 1, and Exp. 2 group (p < 0.05). 4. Observing the fractured surfaces under SEM after the bonding strength test was performed, there were bone-like apatite particles formed in HA-added experimental groups, and a greater number of bone-like apatite particles were formed in the Exp. 2 group compared to the Exp. 1 group.
