The glass-ceramics composed of coal bottom ash produced from a thermal power plant, $Na_{2}O$ and $Li_{2}O$ as a flux agent and $TiO_2$ as a nucleation agent were fabricated and its microstructures were analyzed. The nepheline was a major crystal phase in the glass-ceramics fabricated and its amount increased with $TiO_2$ addition. The glass-ceramics without $TiO_2$ addition had the thick surface crystals induced by a surface-crystallization mechanism and no crystal in the interior matrix. The surface crystallization, however, was restrained and the interior matrix was completely crystallized showing dendrite shape spread with fine particles < $1{\mu}m$ when added with $TiO_2$ above 4 wt%. For the glass-ceramics containing 6 wt% $TiO_2$, the $5{\mu}m$-long dendrite crystal; were interlocked each other which could suppress the crack propagation effectively at the external loading applied.
A glass-ceramics based on blast-furnace slag, with some additives to the theoretical composition in order to control properties of mother glass and the heat treatment conditions, has been investigated. The raw materials in this study were blast-furnace slag, serpentine, feldspar and quartz as mother glass ingredients. Titanium dioxide and chromite were used as the nucleating agents. Batch compositions of the prepared glasses and ceraming conditions were found by trial and error method. The optimum conditions were confirmed by analyzing several measured physical properties such as density change during heat treatment, microhardness of slag-ceramics prepared, viscosity change of glass at heat treatment temperatures, nucleation density change, dilatometric properties, differential thermal analysis, identification of the grown crystal and crystal sizes. The batch composition feasible to prepare slag-ceramics was 40% of blast-furnace slag, 25% of serpentine, 18% of feldspar and 17% of silica sand. Three percent titanium dioxide and 1% chromite of the mother glass were added as nucleating agents. The ceraming conditions under which the slag-ceramics having considerably good properties can be developed found as: "The glass was heated at 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours for nucleation, and the temperature was raised up to 1, 00$0^{\circ}C$ with a rate of 0.75$^{\circ}C$/min for crystal growth.owth.

The change of the photoluminescence properties of La2O3-CaF2-Al2O3-SiO2 glass-ceramics doped with rare earth material, that is used as laser and optical sensors, was analyzed according to heat treatment temperature. The heat treatment conditions for fabricating glass-ceramics were obtained through non-isothermal thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis was performed to determine the degree of crystal growth and kinds of crystal phases generated according to the heat treatment temperature. Using Scherrer's equation, it was predicted that crystals with a size of 25~40 nm would be generated inside the glass-ceramics. Photoluminescence (PL) analysis showed that the specimens heat-treated at 660℃ to 670℃ for 1 hour had the highest PL intensity. Also, from the CIE color coordinate analysis, all glass-ceramics specimens emitted red-orange light regardless of the heat treatment condition.
Sintering property, mechanical property and bioactivity of $CaO-SiO_2-B_2O_3$ glass-ceramics were investigated. This glass-ceramics was sintered at 750-830${\circ}$ and showed nearly pore-free microstructure. The glass-ceramics consisted of three phases, i.e. monclinic-wollastonite, calcium borate and borosilicate glass matrix. The mechanical strength was higher than that of other bioactive ceramics, especially compressive strength(2813 MPa) and fracture toughness($3.12 MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$). Bioactivity of the glass-ceramics depends on amount of $CaB_2O_4$ and borosilicate glass matrix. It might be likely that more soluble $CaB_2O_4$ raises supersaturation of Ca ion in SBF solution and borosilicate glass forms Si-OH group that presents nucleation site of hydroxycarbonate apatite(HCA) layer. So, glassceramics of more $CaB_2O_4$ and borosilicate glass showed better bioactivity.

1018-1021 The CuO-P$_2$O$_{5}$ containing P$_2$O$_{5}$ as glass-former were prepared by press-quenching method on the copper plate. By post-heat treatment of these glasses, the CuO-P$_2$O$_{5}$ -V$_2$O$_{5}$ -g1ass ceramics was obtained and the crystallization behavior and dc conductivities were investigovted. The heat-treated glass-ceramics decreased in electrical conductivity by the order of 10$^1$ compared to amorphous glass. The linear relationship between In($\sigma$T) and T$^{-1}$ indicated that electrical conduction in CuO-P$_2$O$_{5}$ -V$_2$O$_{5}$ -gass occurred by a small polaron hopping.
In lithium silicate photosensitive glass-ceramics, the relationship between lithography time and crystallization, and the effect of addition of mineral acid in etching rate and pattern shape were investigated. Irradiation times for micropatterning were less than 5 minutes in which Ce3+ ions in glass were changed rapidly to Ce4+ with ultra violet light. Overexposure to ultra brought about blot of pattern by diffiraction of light. Addition of mineral acid to HF enhanced etching rate as compared with HF solution only. The addition of H2SO4 especially increased the etching rate by 70%. But the mixed solution also increased the etching rate of the noncrystallized portion of the glass and this resulted in heavy etching. Etching with ultrasonic wave showed higher etching rate than that with the static or fluid method.
The synthesis of glass-ceramic materials from glasses based on industrial wastes or natural rocks their physical properties were studied. Glasses of composition, CaO14.7∼16.1, MgO7.4∼9.0, Al2O38.3∼19.3, SiO2 48.9∼51.0wt% were prepared from domestic blast furnace slag, serpentine, sea sand and etc. with additions of chromic oxide, and fluoride as nucleating agent. The glasses were subjected to controlled heat treatments and yielded fine microstructure of glass-ceramics which were composed of monocrystalline phase of aluminous diopside. X-ray diffraction techniques were adopted to identify the crystalline phases and to determine the degree of crystallization quantitatively. Density, coefficient of thermal expansion, young's modulus, microhardness and modulus of rupture were measured and the resulting properties were discussed in terms of the heat-treatment conditions, the degree of crystallization, species of crystaline phase, the microstructures formed in glass-cramics and the chemical compositions of mother glasses.

The crystallization behavior and dc Conductivities of CuO-Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ -V$_2$O$_{5}$ glasses prepared by quenching on the copper plate were investigated. The conductivities of the glasses were range from 10$^{-4}$ s.$cm^{-1}$ / at room temperature, but the conductivities of the glass-ceramics were 10$^{-3}$ s.$cm^{-1}$ / increased by 10$^1$ order. The linear relationship between In($\sigma$T) and T$^{-1}$ suggested that the electrical conduction in the present glass system would be due to a small polaron hopping mechanism. The value of activation energy of glass-ceramics heat-treated at 30$0^{\circ}C$ for 12hrs was found to be 0.leV
In general the chemical composition of glass ceramics in Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 system is similar to the composition of $\beta$-spodumene (Li2O-Al2O3-4SiO2). With the object to manufacture the glass ceramics which can be produced in the domestic pot the composition of glass was so settled at 1.0 Li2O.0.9Al2O3.6.0SiO2 in order to reduce the contents of Li2O, to prevent the corrosion of the pot and to decrease the cost of raw materials. 0.2 mole and 0.1 mole of the mixture of TiO2 and ZrO2 as nucleants were added to the basic composition of 1.0 Li2O-0.9Al2O3-6.0SiO2. Each sample was divided into two kinds with a TiO2/ZrO2 ratio of 2 to 1 and the other with a TiO2/ZrO2 ratio fo 1 to 1. Thermal expansion coefficient, the most important property of glass ceramics, was tested. The softening point and the melting point of the samples were observed by the use of a heating microscope. The results obtained were as follows. The manufacturing of glass ceramics seems to be possible in the industrial plant using the domestic pot. 1) The composition of the glass which can be melted in the domestic pot process was near 1.0 Li2O.0.9Al2O3.6.0SiO2. 2) The temperature range of crystal creation and crystal growth was between 850-94$0^{\circ}C$, and 5 hours holding the samples at the temperature range was enough to crystallize them. The major crystal was $\beta$-spdumene and there existed petalite partialy. 3) The thermal expansion coefficient fo the crystallized glass was negative. 4) The deforming point of the crystallized glass was 1435$^{\circ}C$.

The glass-ceramics containing bottom ash (B/A) which was a by-produced from an electrical power plant was fabricated and its crystalline phase, microstructure and mechanical properties were analyzed. At first, the glass was fabricated by adding modifier oxide $Li_2O$ to lower the melting temperature of coal bottom ash. The glass obtained was heat-treated by using a 2-stage process to crystallize, that is to say, to increase the degree of crystallization in the glass-ceramics, the first heat treatment for nucleation was performed followed by the secondary one for the growth of nucleates. The main crystalline phase formed in the glass-ceramics was ${\beta}$-spodumene and the secondary phase was $L_2SiO_3$. It was recognized that the degree of crystallization of glass-ceramics was increased with a holding time of the secondary heat treatment stage. In the case of the specimens hold up to 3 hour, the crystallization was not completed and the microstructures and morphologies of crystalline phase were not uniform. In the specimens of holding time over 9 hours, the cracks were generated inside of it, so its compressive strength would decrease due them. In conclusion, it was able to obtain the optimum condition to fabriate the glass-ceramics having the properties of high crystallization degree, uniform microstructures and morphologies and the high mechanical strength.
