  • Salt cementation, a typical naturally-cemented phenomenon, may occur due to water evaporation under the change of climate. Capillary force may influence the distribution of cement in granular soils. This study addresses the effect of capillary force on salt cementation using five different techniques: cone penetration test, electrical conductivity measurement, photographic imaging technique, nondestructive imaging technique, and process monitoring by elastic wave. Glass beads modeling a particulate media was mixed with salt water and then dried in an oven to create the cementation condition. Experimental results show that salt cementation highly concentrates at the top of the small particle size specimens and at the middle or the bottom of the large particle specimens. The predicted capillary heights are similar to the locations of high salt concentration in the cemented specimens. Five suggested methods show that the behavior of salt-cemented granular media heavily depends on the capillary force.

  • The objective of this study is the development and verification of the 4-electrode resistivity probe (4ERP) for the estimation of electrical properties of the saturated soils. The 4ERPs with wedge and plane types are manufactured to obtain the electrical resistivity without polarization at the electrodes by using Wenner array. The wedge type is for the penetration into the soil samples and the plane type is for the installation into the cells used for the laboratory tests. The consolidation tests are carried out by using 6 types of glass beads and 3 types of sands in size. The test results show that the electrical resistivity increases with a decrease in the porosity, and the constant m used in Archie's law is dependent on the particle shape rather particle size. The one dimensional liquefaction tests show that the porosity obtained by the 4ERP is similar to that determined by the volume fraction. The penetration of the 4ERP into the large scale calibration chamber produces the resistivity profiles. This study demonstrates that the 4ERP may effectively estimate the porosity of the saturated soils.

  • Cellular glass foam (CGE), the reprocessed glass, has a possibility as a component of vegetative propagation media of floricultural crops due to the its excellent air and water permeability, similar to that of perlite. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the rooting and growth thereafter of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana ‘Gold Strike’in media containing various volume ratios of granular rockwool, peat-moss, CGF and perlite. The particle size of CGF and perlite was 2.0~4.0mm and 1.2~4.0mm, respectively. Cuttings were rooted in a fog tunnel with a mean temperature of 18.2$^{\circ}C$ and RH of 66.7% under a long day regime (14 h per day light period). Height, length of the longest root, stem diameter, no. of leaves, leaf area, percentage of rooted cuttings, shoot and root fresh weights, shoot and root dry weights, total chlorophyll concentration and physicochemical properties were measured. Cuttings rooted 100% in all treatments. Physicochemical properties in CGF and perlite-containing media showed little differences. The growth of rooted plants in the CGF-containing media was similar or rather superior to that in perlite-containing media. Consequently, CGF has a possibility as a vegetative propagation medium of Kalanchoe. To make wider commercial use of CGF, more demonstrative experiments and analyses are necessary.

  • The effects of $Na_2O$, $SiO_2$ and $H_2O$ contents of the synthetic mixtures prepared from water glass on the crystallinity and crystallite size of sodalite were studied. The composition of the synthetic mixtures described by $x\;Na_2O{\cdot}y\;SiO_2{\cdot}Al_2O_3{\cdot}z\;H_2O$ was varied within x=2.5~7.5, y=1.4~3.0, z=140~400. The hydrothermal reaction was carried out at $140^{\circ}C$ for 2 days. High content of $Na_2O$ resulted in the high crystallinity and small crystallite of sodalite. The $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ molar ratios of around 2 were suitable for the synthesis of sodalite, and produced zeolite species were varied by the $H_2O$ content. Sodalite was mainly obtained with a high crystallinity from the synthetic mixtures with $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ molar ratio of around 2 and high content of $Na_2O$. The high content of sodium ions caused a decrease in the particle sizes because of their role of structure directing agent.

  • The effect of inlay surface treatment on bonding was investigated when resin inlay was bonded to resin-modified glass-ionomer base with resin cement. For the preparation of glass-ionomer base, resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (Fuji II LC, GC Co., Japan) was filled in class I cavities of 7mm in diameter and 2mm in depth made in plastic molds. Eighty eight resin inlay specimens were made with Charisma$^{(R)}$ (Kulzer, Germany) and then randomly assigned to the four different surface treatment conditions: Group I, $50{\mu}m$ aluminium oxide sandblasting and silane treatment ; Group II, silane treatment alone ; Group III, sandblasting alone, and Group IV (control), no surface treatment. After a dentin bonding agent with primer (One-Step$^{TM}$, Bisco Inc., IL., U.S.A.) was applied to bonding surface of resin inlay and base, resin inlay were cemented to glass-ionomer base with a resin cement (Choice$^{TM}$, Bisco Inc., IL., U.S.A.). Shear bond strengths of each specimens were measured using Instron universal testing machine (4202 Instron, lnstron Co., U.S.A.) and fractured surfaces were examined under the stereoscope. Statistical analysis was done with one-way ANOVA and Dunkan's multiple range test. The results were as follows: 1. Sandblasting and silane treatment provided the greatest bond strength(10.56${\pm}$1.95 MPa), and showed a significantly greater bond strength than sandblasting alone or no treatment (p<0.05). 2. Silane treatment provided a significantly greater bond strength(9.77${\pm}$2.04 MPa) than sandblasting alone or no treatment (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in bond strength between sandblasting treatment and silane one (p>0.05). 3. Sandblasting alone provided no significant difference in bond strength from no treatment (p>0.05). 4. Stereoscopic examination of fractured surface showed that sandblasting and silane treatment or silane treatment alone had more cohesive failure mode than adhesive failure mode. 5. In relationship between shear bond strength and failure mode, cohesive failure occurred more frequently as bond strength increased.

  • Frictional characteristics of mesoporous $SiO_2$ thin films were evaluated with different pore sizes. The films were manufactured by sol-gel and self-assembly methods to have a porous structure. The pores on the surface may play as the outlet of wear particle and the storage of lubricant so that the surface interactions could be improved. The pores were exposed on the surface by chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) or plasma-etching after forming the porous films. The ball-on-disk tests with mesoporous $SiO_2$ thin films on glass specimen were conducted at sliding speed of 15 rpm and a load of 0.26 N. The results show considerable dependency of friction on pore size of mesoporous $SiO_2$ thin films. The friction coefficient decreased as increasing the pore size. CMP process was very useful to expose the pores on the surface.

  • Recently, low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology has gained a remarkable application potential in sensors, actuators and microsystems fields. In this study, we investigated the effects of annealing treatment on the electrical properties of $Pb(ZrTi)O_3$ (PZT) thin films deposited on LTCC substrate. The LTCC substrates with thickness of 400 ${\mu}m$ were fabricated by laminating 12 green tapes which consist of alumina and glass particle in an organic binder. The PZT thin films were deposited on Au/LTCC substrates by RF magnetron sputtering method. Then, the change of the crystallization of the films was investigated under various annealing temperatures. The results showed that the crystallization of the films were enhanced as increasing annealing temperatures. The film, annealed at $700^{\circ}C$, 3min, was well crystallized in the ferovskite structure. The structural variation of the films were analyzed by using X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and field emmision scanning electron microscopy (FESEM).

  • Low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) is one of promising materials for MEMS structures because it has very good electrical and mechanical properties as well as possibility of making various three dimensional (3D) structures. In this work, piezoelectric pressure sensors based on hybrid LTCC technology were presented. The LTCC diaphragms with thickness of 400 um were fabricated by laminating 12 green tapes which consist of alumina and glass particle in an organic binder. The piezoelectric sensing layer consists of $Pb(ZrTi)O_3$ (PZT) thin film deposited by RF magnetron sputtering method on between top and bottom Au electrodes. The results showed that the fabrication method is very suitable for pressure sensor applications. The PZT films deposited on LTCC diaphragms were successfully grown and were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction method (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM).

  • Typically, high lime fly ash (Class C) has been characterized as a fly ash, which at lower replacement levels is not as effective as the low lime (Class F) fly ash, in mitigating alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in portland cement concrete. The influence of fineness of Class C, obtained by grinding virgin fly ash into finer particles, on its pozzolanic reactivity and ASR mitigation performance was investigated in this study. In order to assess the pozzolanic reactivity of mortar mixtures containing virgin or ground fly ashes, the strength activity index (SAI) test and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) were conducted on the mortar cubes and paste samples, respectively, containing virgin fly ash or two ground fly ashes. In addition, to evaluate any improvement in the ASR mitigation of ground fly ashes compared to that of the virgin fly ash, the accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT) was conducted on the mortar mixtures containing different dosages of either virgin or ground fly ashes. In all tests crushed glass aggregate was used as a highly reactive aggregate. Results from this study showed that the finest fly ash (i.e., with an average particle size of 3.1 microns) could increase the flow ability along with the pozzolanic reactivity of the mortar mixture. However, results from this study suggested that the fineness of high lime fly ash does not seem to have any significant effect on ASR mitigation.

  • Polycrystalline materials suchas yttria and alumina have been applied as a plasma resisting material for the plasma processing chamber. However, polycrystal line material may easily generate particles and the particles are sources of contamination during the plasma enhanced process. Amorphous material can be suitable to prevent particle generation due to absence of grain-boundaries. We manufactured nitrogen-containing $SiO_2-Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ based glasses with various contents of silicon and fixed nitrogen content. The thermal properties, mechanical properties and plasma etching rate were evaluated and compared for the different composition samples. The plasma etching behavior was estimated using XPS with depth profiling. From the result, the plasma etching rate highly depends on the silicon content and it may results from very low volatile temperature of SiF4 generated during plasma etching. The silicon concentration at the plasma etched surface was very low besides the concentration of yttrium and aluminum was relatively high than that of silicon due to high volatile temperature of fluorine compounds which consisted with aluminum and yttrium. Therefore, we conclude that the samples having low silicon content should be considered to obtain low plasma etching rate for the plasma resisting material.
