  • The yield shear strength of bolt connection in glass fiber reinforced glulam was predicted using a design-based equation, and was compared to the empirical yield shear strength. For the predicted equation, the mechanical properties of member (the elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, shear modulus) was tested. The fracture toughness factor ($K_{ft}$) of glass fiber reinforced glulam was reflected to the revision of the design equation of bolted connection. The compressive strength properties to grain direction was influenced by annual ring angle and width of lamina. Compared with the revised yield shear strength of reinforced glulam, it was tended to be similar to the empirical yield shear strength on the diameter of bolt and the reinforcements. The revised yield shear strength from proposed formula of KBC was most appropriately matched in the bolt connection of the glass fiber reinforced glulam.

  • Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) bar has emerged as a viable and sustainable replacement to steel in reinforced concrete (RC) under severe corrosive environment. The behavior of concrete columns reinforced with FRP bars, spirals, and hoops is an ongoing area of research. In this study, 3D nonlinear numerical modelling of circular concrete columns reinforced with Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars and transversely confined with GFRP spirals were conducted using fracture-plastic model. The numerical models and experimental results are found to be in good agreement. The effectiveness of confinement was accessed through von-mises stresses, and it was found that the stresses in the concrete's core are higher with a 30 mm pitch (46 MPa) compared to a 60 mm pitch (36 MPa). The validated models are used to conduct parametric studies. In terms of axial load carrying capacity and member ductility, the effect of concrete strength, spiral pitch, and longitudinal reinforcement ratio are thoroughly investigated. The confinement effect and member ductility of a GFRP RC column increases as the spiral pitch decreases. It is also found that the confinement effect and member ductility decreased with increase in strength of concrete.

  • This paper investigates the performances of GFRP bar and its possibility for using a substitute of steel bar. GFRO bar was made with introducing the glass fiber into GTR added UPE. We carried out the tensile test of GFRP and steel bar and out the three point bend test bond-test and fracture energy measurement on the GFRP bar and steel bar reinforced concrete. The GFRP bar was excellent as comparison with steel bar in the contribution to the energy absorption and the ductility of concrete. But its tensile, bond and bend strengthes were comparatively small. In order to improve these defects, we judged that glass fibers in GFRP bar must be completely adhesive one another by the impregnating glass fibers into UPE.

  • Characteristics of delamination factor and surface roughness by drilling condition for glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites were investigated in this paper. An expression to quantify the delamination factor was induced by using image pixels of the entry and the experimental drilling was accomplished by fabricating several GFRP specimens in condition of minimizing the effect of vibration and heat. A method for measuring 6 points average surface roughness was applied to acquire the more reliable roughness values. The experimental results showed that the delamination factor was decreased as the feed rate was increased and it was also slightly decreased as the cutting speed was increased. Also, it was investigated that the surface roughness at inner surface of drilled holes was increased as the feed rate was increased, whereas the roughness values were not affected by the cutting speed variation.

  • In this paper, a machine learning and deep learning model for the design of circuit analog (CA) radar absorbing structure with a cross-dipole pattern on a glass fiber fabric reinforced plastic is presented. The proposed model can directly calculate reflection loss in the Ku-band (12-18 GHz) without three-dimensional electromagnetic numerical analysis based on the geometry of the Cross-Dipole pattern. For this purpose, the optimal learning model was derived by applying various machine learning and deep learning techniques, and the results calculated by the learning model were compared with the electromagnetic wave absorption characteristics obtained by 3D electromagnetic wave numerical analysis to evaluate the comparative advantages of each model. Most of the implemented models showed similar calculated results to the numerical results, but it was found that the Fully-Connected model could provide the most similar calculated results.

  • High performance materials such as Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) are often used for retrofitting structures against blast loads due to its ductility and strength. The effectiveness of retrofit materials needs to be precisely evaluated for the retrofitting design based on the dynamic material responses under blast loads. In this study, the blast resistance of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) and Kevlar/Glass hybrid fabric (K/G) retrofitted reinforced concrete (RC) wall is analyzed by using the explicit analysis code LS-DYNA, which accommodates the high-strain rate dependent material models. Also, the retrofit effectiveness of FRP fabrics is evaluated by comparing the analysis results for non-retrofitted and retrofitted walls. The verification of the analysis is performed through comparisons with the previous experimental results.

  • The stress distribution around the cutout of composite cylindrical shells with a circular or elliptical reinforced cutout subjected to axial compression or tension is studied by asymptotic method. Analytical solutions used a Donnell type orthotropic shell theory are presented by the defined stress concentration factor and are compared to experimental results. The experiment used the universal testing machine (UTM), strain gage and fixtures designed/manufactured for axial tension test of a cylindrical shell is carried and the composite material used in the experiment is plain weave glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP).

  • Finite element method (FEM) is utilized in the development of products to realistically analyze and predict the mechanical behavior of materials in various fields. However, the approach based on the numerical analysis of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites, for which the fiber orientation and strain rate affect the mechanical properties, has proven to be challenging. The purpose of this study is to define and evaluate the mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced plastic composites using the numerical analysis models of Digimat, a linear, nonlinear multi-scale modeling program for various composite materials such as polymers, rubber, metal, etc. In addition, the aim is to predict the behavior of realistic polymeric composites. In this regard, the tensile properties according to the fiber orientation and strain rate of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) with short fiber weight fractions of 30wt% among various polymers were investigated using references. Information on the fiber orientation was calculated based on injection analysis using Moldflow software, and was utilized in the finite element model for tensile specimens via a mapping process. LS-Dyna, an explicit commercial finite element code, was used for coupled analysis using Digimat to study the tensile properties of composites according to the fiber orientation and strain rate of glass fibers. In addition, the drawbacks and advantages of LS-DYNA's various anisotropic material models were compared and evaluated for the analysis of glass fiber reinforced plastic composites.

  • We have studied the impact and bending characteristics of a dual band antenna (1.575, 2.645 GHz) with composite sandwich construction. Mechanical performance of the antenna can be improved by reinforcing the antenna by sandwiching the planar antenna with layers of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic(CFRP) and glass fiber-reinforced plastic(GFRP) using an adhesive film. According to the ASTM D7137, ASTM C393 and MIL-STD401B, impact and bending test were performed and the S-parameters and gains of the antenna were measured in order to verify electrical and mechanical performance. The maximum contact load and the bending load of the antenna are 4 kN and 400 N and gains of the antenna are 6 dBi and 4.6 dBi in the GPS and DMB bands, respectively. The proposed antenna structure can be applied to surfaces of vehicles.
