Ginseng is major medicinal plant in Korea. Because of its long cultivation period the yield losses of 5 years of ginseng is 50% due to various diseases. The objective of this study is to select potential biocontrol agents. As the result of research so far achieved to contribute to rational prevention of ginseag plant disease for the stable cultivation of ginseng, three bacterial strains, Streptomyces lauretii strain B8180, Bacillus subtilis strain 8856, and Burkholderia cepacia strain 7944 were isolated from oak leaf compost. The strains showed antagonistic activities against five ginseng pathogenic fungi (Cylindrocarpon destructans, Rhizoctonia solani, Phytophthora cactorum, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium solani f. sp. panacis) and control effects on Phytophthora blight.
For the purpose of utilizing the saponins of the ground part of Panax ginseng, the studies on saponins isolated from the leaves, stems, and flowers of ginseng were Performed. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The crude saponin contents of ginseng loaves, stems, and flowers 12.8%, 1.6% and 6.9% respectively. 2. Infra-red spectrum of ginseng leaf saponin was identical with that of ginseng root.
This study was conducted to obtain the breeding information for the leaf breakdown, and correlation coefficients between leaf breakdown and some agronomic characters in flue-cured tobacco at Taegu Experiment Station, Korea Ginseng & Tobacco Research Institute. NC 95 and NC 2326 were used as parents. The bulk method procedure was used from the F2 to the F4 generations, 54 plants were selected among F4, and 11 lines were selected among 54 F5 which based on high resistance to bacterial wilt compared with NC2326. The entries were composed of parents and 11 F6 advanced lines, and designed in randomized block with 3 replications. Plant seedlings were transplanted in 16 April. The number of breakdown leaf were investigated at flowering stage, 18 June. There were significant difference between NC 95 and NC 2326 for the number of breakdown leaf, number and weight of ground suckers, days to flower, yield and resistance to bacterial wilt, and similar results were appeared among lines. Estimated heritability in the broad-sense ranged from 59.3% to 87.4% for all characters. Most of genetic correlations were higher than phenotypic coefficients between characters. Number of breakdown leaf was positively correlated with days to flower, the number and weight of ground suckers, while it was negative to yield. One line among 11 had few breakdown leaf, low producted ground suckers and high resistance to bacterial wilt. Above results suggest that the number and weight of ground suckers can be use as a selection criterion for leaf breakdown even under the condition without leaf breakdown.
This study was conducted to obtain basic information for varietal difference of leaf breakdown in field of flue-cured tobacco at Taegu Experiment Station, Korea Ginseng & Tobacco Research Institute in 1987. The experiment was designed in randomized block with 3 replications, data ware analysed as Split split-plot design. Main plots were varieties, sub-plots were leaf positions, 4, 5 and 6th from bottom, and each sub-plot was divided into 3 parts with distance of midrib, 7 10 and 13em from stalk. Four varieties, NC 95, NC 2326, NC 82 and BY 4 were transplanted in 15 April, and measured the weight of leaf breakdown by artificially weighted in 5 June. The results obtained are as follows : 1. Weights of leaf breakdown according to leaf position, NC 95 were lower as 358-5799 than those of other varieties as 555-597g, were not significantly different regardless of varieties. 2. Weights of leaf breakdown in relation to distance of midrib from stack, NC 95 were lower as 309-419g than those of other varieties as 472-710g. 3. Weights of leaf breakdown were significantly different according to distance of midrib from stalk, and not significantly different according to leaf position under the same distance of midrib from stalk regardless of varieties.

Lime-bordeaux mixture (LBM) has been used instead of pesticides in ginseng field and orchard since the 1960's in Korea. In this experiment, LBM was made with different concentrations and sprayed in the field of ginseng for eco-friendly cultivation. Growth characteristics and disease such as alternaria blight, anthracnose, and gray mold were investigated in 4-5 year old ginseng after spraying LBM. LBM caused a little damage on leaf when it was sprayed at the time of leafing stage, late April and early May. Root weights of five-year-old ginseng were 43.1~51.5 g and 41.2~46.6 g in the plot of mid-April and mid-May treatments, respectively. These growth levels were further reduced as compared with that of the chemicals treatment plot. The rate of diseases in the plot of 6-6 and 8-8 ratio were 0.0~4.8% and 0.0~4.4%, respectively, which was similar with that in the plot of chemical control for alternaria blight and anthracnose. However, LBM had little effect on controling gray mold. It showed lower control effect in the plot of 4-4 ratio than that of chemical control. This result will be expected to be a useful guide that can be used in the field to the farmers of the ginseng.
The study was conducted to investigate the relationships between the value of fresh leaf lengh ${\times}$ width and actual fresh or cured leaf area, Cured leaf weight of cutter and leaf in Burley tobacco plants. In all tested varieties, Actual fresh leaf area or cured leaf area, cured leaf weight was high significantly correlated with the value of fresh leaf length ${\times}$ width. The linear regression equation between them could be exploited for rapid and easy estimation of either fresh or cured leaf area, cured leaf weight. Highly significant correlation between fresh leaf area and cured leaf area or cured leaf weight was confirmed and a linear regression equation was also obtained for easy estimation of cured leaf area or cured leaf weight.
The regression line was used to predict ginseng root yield from characters of aerial parts, stem diameter, leaf length and width, and degrees of missing plants per unit area. The rates of fitness of predicted yield on practical yield investigated in field were high. Especially, theoretical yield calculated by the size of stem diameter was a good fit. Therefore, a line regression appeared to be a satisfactory fit.
Growth, content and partition of mineral nutrient of Panax ginseng (3 years old) were investigated with four levels of nitrogen source (ammonium sulfate, urea and calcium nitrate) under sand culture for one year. Growth of top and root was greatest at 50 ppm in all sources. Nitrate showed the greatest root weight and urea did the greatest top weight. Leaf width was large in without-nitrogen plot. The ratio of length to diameter (L/D) of stem was smaller with ammonium than with nitrate. Negative correlation was found between L/D of stem and that of tap root. Nitrogen application increased phosphorus content in leaf and stem but decreased calcium. Partition of P into leaf was smaller in 50 ppm than in without-nitrogen plot in all sources. While that of Mg, Ca and N was greater.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of topping time and degree on the characteristics of three tobacco varieties, and to establish the early topping (Button stage) method at Eumseong Experiment Station, Korea Tobacco Research Institute in 1979-1980. The results are summarized as follows; yield increased in the plots of By 104, topping at button stage and under first leaf from floral axis. Quality was good in the plot topped at button stage and under first leaf from floral axis. Price per l0a was highest in the plot topped at button stage and under first leaf from floral axis.
Background: Ginsenosides, which have strong biological activities, can be divided into polar or less-polar ginsenosides. Methods: This study evaluated the phytochemical diversity of the saponins in Panax ginseng (PG) root, American ginseng (AG) root, and Panax notoginseng (NG) root; the stem-leaves from Panax ginseng (SPG) root, American ginseng (SAG) root, and Panax notoginseng (SNG) root as well as the saponins obtained following heating and acidification [transformed Panax ginseng (TPG), transformed American ginseng (TAG), transformed Panax notoginseng (TNG), transformed stem-leaves from Panax ginseng (TSPG), transformed stem-leaves from American ginseng (TSAG), and transformed stem-leaves from Panax notoginseng (TSNG)]. The diversity was determined through the simultaneous quantification of the 16 major ginsenosides. Results: The content of ginsenosides in NG was found to be higher than those in AG and PG, and the content in SPG was greater than those in SNG and SAG. After transformation, the contents of polar ginsenosides in the raw saponins decreased, and contents of less-polar compounds increased. TNG had the highest levels of ginsenosides, which is consistent with the transformation of ginseng root. The contents of saponins in the stem-leaves were higher than those in the roots. The transformation rate of SNG was higher than those of the other samples, and the loss ratios of total ginsenosides from NG (6%) and SNG (4%) were the lowest among the tested materials. In addition to the conversion temperature, time, and pH, the crude protein content also affects the conversion to rare saponins. The proteins in Panax notoginseng allowed the highest conversion rate. Conclusion: Thus, the industrial preparation of less-polar ginsenosides from SNG is more efficient and cheaper.
