Structural and Electrical Properties of Vanadium Oxide Thin Films Annealed in Vacuum (진공 어닐링한 바나듐 산화악의 구조적, 전기적 특성)

  • Thin films of vanadium oxide(VO/sub x/) were deposited by r.f. magnetron sputtering from V₂O/sub 5/ target with oxygen/(oxygen+argon) partial pressure ratio of 0% and 8% and in situ annealed in vacuum at 400℃ for 1h and 4h. Crystal structure, chemical composition, molecular structure, optical and electrical properties of films were characterized through XRD, XPS, RBS, FTIR, optical absorption and electrical conductivity measurements. The films as-deposited are amorphous, but 0%O₂ films annealed for time longer than 4h and 8% O₂ films annealed for time longer than 1h are polycrystalline. As the oxygen partial pressure is increased the films become more stoichiometric V₂O/sub 5/. When annealed at 400℃, the as-deposited films are reduced to a lower oxide. The optical transmission of the films annealed in vacuum decreases considerably than the as-deposited films and the optical absorption of all the films increases rapidly at wavelength shorter than about 550nm. Electrical conductivity and thermal activation energy are increased with increasing the annealing time and with decreasing the oxygen partial pressure.

  • Industrial-scale pulse corona process to remove $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ simultaneously from combustion flue gas has been studied. The pilot plant built in the present study treats 2,000 $Nm^3$/hr of flue gas from a boiler. The geometry of the pulse corona reactor is similar to that of an electrostatic precipitator commonly used in industry, A thyratron switch and magnetic pulse compressors, which can generate up to 130 kV of peak pulse voltage and up to 30 kW of average pulse power, have been used to produce pulsed corona. The removal efficiencies of $S0_2$ and $NO_x$ with the present process are maximum of 95 % and 85 %, respectively. Electrical power consumption to produce the pulsed corona, which has been one of the major difficulties to apply this process to industry, has been evaluated in the present study. The results showed that the power consumption can be reduced significantly by simultaneous addition of hydrocarbon injection and heterogeneous phase reactions to the process.

The Effect of Alloying Elements and Heat Treatment on the Pitting Corrosion of 440 A Martensitic Stainless Steels (440A 강의 공식부식에 미치는 첨가원소 및 열처리의 영향)

  • 440A martensitic stainless steels which were modified with reduced carbon content (${\sim}$0.5%) and addition of small amount of nickel, vanadium, tungsten and molybdenum were manufactured. Effects of alloying elements and heat treatment on the pitting corrosion in 3.5% NaCl were investigated through the electrochemical polarization tests. The lowest pitting potential, $E_p$, was obtained when austenitizing temperature was $1250^{\circ}C$ and this is because of the grain coarsening. When austenitized at $1050^{\circ}C$ and tempered at $350{\sim}750^{\circ}C$, the highest $E_p$ was obtained at $350^{\circ}C$, while the lowest at $450^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$ regardless of alloying elements added. But $E_p$ was increased a little at the tempering temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$ when 0.4 wt.% of tungsten was added. More pitting was observed at $450{\sim}550^{\circ}C$, and pitting was formed at regions where Cr concentration is low or grain boundaries are intersecting and showed irregular shape.

Effects of Butanol Fraction of Crataegi Fructus on the Translocation of PKC $\alpha$ and Myosin Phosphatase Subnits in Vascular Smooth Muscle

  • LC20 phosphorylation and PKC α play an important role in modulation of contractile activity of smooth muscle. Besides, myosin phosphatase is also related with smooth muscle contraction in signaling pathways. We previously demonstrated that Crataegi Fructus inhibited phenylephrine-induced contraction and which might be implicated in nitrite formation(Son et al., 2002). In this study, we investigated the effects of butanol fraction of Crataegi Fructus(BFFC) on the localization of α-protein kinease C(PKC α) and myosin phosphatase subnits(MPs) in freshly isolated single ferret potal vein cells, and phosphorylation of LC20 during phenylephrine stimulation. In PKC α and MPs localization, BFFC blocked its translocation from the cytosol to the cell membrane by treatment of phenylephrine. BFFC have also dephosphorylated LC20 phosphorylation by phenylephrine stimulation under basal level, but no significant. These results indicate that the relaxation effect of BFFC is associated with inhibition of PKC α activation and MPs dissociation, and thus myosin phosphatase activity may be increased.

Development of a Mobile Robot System for Visual Inspection under Hot Environment

  • A mobile robot system is developed to inspect the condition of industrial facilities under hot environment. The mobile robot is equipped with internal and external heat insulating material, an internal cooling mechanism, two CCD cameras, wireless communication devices for both the control and image signals, and an embedded controller. The portable controller is equipped with two joysticks for both the mobile robot and the inspection CCD camera, an LCD monitor, and several buttons. The developed mobile robot travels on the internal floor in hot furnaces by operators' joystick operation, captures the images of facilities in the furnaces using a zoom CCD camera, and sends the images to the portable controller through wireless communication. The mobile robot can be operated without any problem under hot environment less than 400$^{\circ}C$ in 30 minutes. This kind of automatic inspection mobile robot can be helpful to prevent significant troubles of industrial facilities without danger of human beings under harmful environment.

  • In this paper, a self-propulsive and small concrete floor finishing trowel robot with twin trowels is proposed. Due to the small size and omni-directional moving capability, it is adequate for small space such as apartment. By adjusting the posture of trowels, it can move in any direction without wheels. We used cheap PIC processor for the cost saving design of the modules and adopted mode processors for easy operation of control stick. For the position control of the robot, we made a motion control algorithm appealing to the stepping motor driver module and the wireless communication module between the robot and PC (or control stick). In this paper, we discuss the control problem of the floor finishing robot in order to move to the right position. By comparing experimental result with simulation, we show the validity of the robot mechanism, sensors, and the control system.

  • KAERI is developing the Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process (ACP) as a pre-disposal treatment process for spent fuel. In this process, the management process must operate in intense radiation fields as well as in a high temperature. Therefore, remote maintenance has played a significant role in this process. Hence suitable remote handling and maintenance technology needs to be developed along with the design of the process concepts. To do this, we developed the digital mockup for the ACP. The digital mockup provides the capability of verifying the remote operability of the process without fabrication of the process equipment. In other words, by applying virtual reality to the remote maintenance operation, a remote operation task can be simulated in the digital mockup. Through utilizing this graphic simulation in this digital mockup, general guidelines can be established for designing equipment intended for remote handling and maintenance. Also, the designer of the equipment that must be remotely maintained should ensure that there is adequate access to the process equipment. The graphic simulator will substantially reduce the cost of the develo363pment of the remote handling and maintenance procedure as well as the process equipment.

  • This paper describes design of a variable-N frequency synthesizer for RF PLL with $0.13{\mu}m$ silicon CMOS technology being used as an application of the UWB system like MBOA. To get good performance of speed and noise super dynamic circuits was used, and to get variable-N division ratio MOSFET switching circuits was used. Especially to solve narrow bandwidth problem of the dynamic circuits load resistance value of unit divider block was varied. Simulation results of the designed circuit shows very fast and wide operation characteristics as 5~26GHz frequency range.

Centrifugal Modeling of Sand Compaction Pile (모래다짐말뚝의 원심모델링)

  • This paper is results of extensive centrifuge model experiments about design factors influencing the bearing capacity and the settlement behaviors of SCP (Sand Compaction Pile). Centrifuge model tests were carried out changing design factors for SCP method such as replacement area ratio (as= 20, 40, 70%), improvement ratio to footing width (W/B = 1, 2, 3), and amount of fines in sand pile (#200 = 5, 10, 15). Therefore, the effects of these design factors on the bearing capacity and the settlement behavior of SCP were investigated and changes of stress concentratio rato due to such an design factors were also investigated. Centrifuge model testing technique for preparing and installing centrifuge model of sand compaction pile, using freezing them, was also developed. As results of centrifuge model tests, more fines in sand compaction pile increases the bearing capacity of SCP. Optimum improvement ratio to footing width was found to be 2. Values of stress concentration ratio was in the ranges of 1.5 - 3.5. The depth of bulging in sand piles was found in the range of 2.0 - 2.5 times of pile diameter.

Temperature-Dependent Instabilities of DC characteristics in AlGaN/GaN-on-Si Heterojunction Field Effect Transistors

  • We have performed reverse gate bias stress tests on AlGaN/GaN-on-Si Heterostructure FETs (HFETs). The shift of threshold voltage ($V_{th}$) and the reduction of on-current were observed from the stressed devices. These changes of the device parameters were not permanent. We investigated the temporary behavior of the stressed devices by analyzing the temperature dependence of the instabilities and TCAD simulation. As the baseline temperature of the electrical stress tests increased, the changes of the $V_{th}$ and the on-current were decreased. The on-current reduction was caused by the positive shift of the $V_{th}$ and the increased resistance of the gate-to-source and the gate-to-drain access region. Our experimental results suggest that electron-trapping effect into the shallow traps in devices is the main cause of observed instabilities.
