The waste reduction technology of chloride contaminated red-mud from by-product of Bayer process

  • The general red-mud minerals consist of hematite, sodalite, anatase, quartz, gibbsite and miner impurities. This gives serious environmental damage for the ocean disposal. It mixed with chloride compound and the content of chlorine is about 2,000-3,000ppm. This paper can be suggested the chloride reduction technology that is applied basically mineral processing by physical separation. Then it can be possible to produce the totally 24wt. $\%$ useful red-mud which chloride content is less then 400ppm.

  • synthesis of artificial kaolinite and the transformation of domestic halloysite have been attempted by means of the hydrothermal treatment. The hydrothermal reaction of the mixtures of gibbsite and amorphous silica was conducted for the synthesis of kaolinite under the pressure of 125MPa at 30$0^{\circ}C$ and especially the seed of kaolinite was added so as to facilitate the synthesis reaction. Domestic pink kaolin of B-grade was hydrothermally treated, in a similar way, for the transformation of crystalline form of it. Boehmite and the artificial kaolinite less than 0.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ could be obtained through the hydrothermal reaction. It could also be found that the majority of hyalloysite was transformed into the plate-type kaolinite through the recrystallization by treating hydrothermally for a long time.

Mineralogy of Kaolin from Hadong-sancheong Area, Korea (하동-산청지역에서 산출되는 고령토의 광물학적 연구)

  • The kaolin deposits in Hadong-Sancheong area, have been formed by supergene weathering of anorthositic rocks including anorthosite, leucogabbro, and gabbro. Kaolin consists chiefly of halloysite(10$\AA$) and kaolinite with other minerals such as illite, vermiculite, plagioclase, hornblende, quartz amorphous materials(allophane and siica), goethite, and hematite. Goethite and hematite are the major coloring agents of the reddish brown and other colored kaolins. Other common accessory minerals are magnetite, ilmentite, anatase, gibbsite, I/S, C/V, chlorite, lithiophorite, and birnessite. Paragonite, dravite, laumontite, clinozoisite, muscovite, scolecite, stellerite are locally found. Al substitution of Fe in goethite and hematite decreases from the surface zone toward the deeper zone. The kaolin deposits show three horizontal zoning; the upper reddish brown, middle pink, and lower white zones. All the zones are characterized by somewhat different mineralogy. The factors for the formation of kaolin deposits in Hadong-Sancheong area are 1) the presence of anorthositic rocks, 2) the low flat or gentle topography, 3) the favorable climate, and 4) the long-continued preservation of kaolins with-out erosion.

  • Mineralogy of sand, silt and clay fractions from the five chronosequence soils of Jeju Island is studied with the X-ray, TEM and SEM techniques. Soils of Songag and Donghong situated at lower elevations are generally developed on relatively of ash or alluvial deposits and contain mainly ferromagnesian minerals and feldspars, with some quartz, mica and volcanic glass. Crystalline minerals are dominant in the clay fraction; halloysite and vermiculite are abundant but small amounts of allophane are present. Clay migration results in well developed ferrigargillan, Soils of Pyeongdae and Heugag located at higher elevations are developed on relatively young volcanic ash with some contamination of continental aeolian dust probably containing quartz which may be come from acid ash shower. The absence of clay illuivation is due to the dominance of allophane. This clay mineral is associated with some gibbsite, imogolite and halloysite.

  • In these days, it is actively investigated to use loess in textile industry. The loess have been reported for emissivity of far-infrared and negative ion, and antibacterial efficacy. The loess consist of quartz, feldspar, clay mineral, iron oxide mineral, gibbsite [Al(OH)$_3$], etc. The main component of loess is clay minerals which have great adsorption about ion exchange and far-infrared emission properties. Recently, various inner-wears, sheets, and interior goods are manufactured using the loess due to its improved blood circulation, metabolism, antibacterial and deodorizing properties. (omitted)

  • Amorphous alumina(AA) the precursor of ${\gamma}$-alumina for catalyst support was made in the newly designed ball filled heating column. Some properties of AA as precursor were investigated. In observation of microstruc-ture and pore structure of AA and its derivatives scanning electronic microscope(SEM) and transmission electronic microscope(TEM) were used. It was found that the width of one particle in AA was 45~60$\AA$ and the average distance among the particles ranged 9~12 $\AA$ which suggested a micropore structure. When AA was reacted with water the shape of the surface was found to be altered and acicular bioehmite was formed inside AA which contributed inproved formability. Pore distribution was evaluated for the three samples of AA ground and granulated lump and La2O3 coated alumina. Acid sites were quantitatively determined by ammonia TPD method and the effect of impurity of Na on acid sites was discussed. Water adsorption capacity was evaluated in terms of a desiccant.

  • Aluminum hydrates were prepared by precipitation method using Al2(SO4)3$.$18H2O as a starting material and NH4OH as precipitation agent. The phases of aluminum hydrate were changed from amorphous aluminum hydrate to pseudo-boehmite of AlOOH form and bayerite, gibbsite, hydragillite and norstrandite of Al(OH)3 form with increasing pH. As pH increased, agglomeration phenomena were reduced. Aluminum hydrates of AlOOH and Al(OH)3 form represented dehydration of structural water near 175$^{\circ}C$ and 385$^{\circ}C$, and 280$^{\circ}C$, respectively. As the ratio of Al(OH)3 to AlOOH increased, specific surface area was reduced.

  • Amorphous alumina powder prepared by the fast calcination of aluminum trihydroxide(Al(OH)3 gibbsite) for 0.5 second at 580$^{\circ}C$ was investigated rehydration propeties. Phase composition crystal size and mor-phology surface area pore volume and pore size distribution of pesudo-boehmite and bayerite crystals changed with temperature time water/alumina ratio and particle size when amorphous alumina rehydrated with water. Phase compositions were examined with XRD and DTA and crystal sized morphologies were investigaed with SEM and TEM. Also rehydration properties of amorphous alumina were in-vestigated by measuring the surface area pore volume and pore size distribution.

  • Innovated utilization of Korean kaolins as pharmaceuticals is attempted, for which relevant properties including adsorptive behaviours are observed in connection with their mineralogical structures. In practice, physico-chemical properties are assessed by means of IR, XRD and thermal analysis including DTA, TG and DSC. Elemental analysis of the ore specimens under investigation is carried out in conventional manners. It is found that the chemical compositions are varied significantly with sampling sites and primary classifications. The clay ores thus analyzed are mainly composed of halloysite species. Proper benefication of the raw clays is necessary so that authentic requirements for medicinal use may be satisfied. White-colored premium grade halloysite could be utilized as therapeutics with relative ease after purification. Evidence indicates that gibbsite-like impurities are intercalated between the 1 : 1 layered moieties. Thermal behaviours may be characterized in such a fashion that loss of free water occurs near 100.deg. C and further heatings result in liberation of bound water near 500.deg. C, with subsequent transformation into amorphous metastable entities. Through thermal activation, enhanced pharmaceutical effects could be envisaged.

  • Adsorption experiments of heavy metal cations by Fe- and Al-hydroxides was conducted to obtain clear information on their adsorption mechanisms. The adsorption isothermal curves of heavy metal cations by Fe- and Al-hydroxides conformed to Langmuir's equation. Increasing the crystallinity degree of Fe- and Al-hydroxides tended to decrease the adsorption capacity and binding energy of heavy metal cations. At the same crystallinity degree, Al-hydroxide showed higher adsorption capacity and energy for the heavy metal cations than Fe-hydroxide. The adsorption capacity and energy of heavy metal cations were directly related to CEC, specific surface area and charge density of hydroxides, and the sequence was in the order of $Cu^{+{+}}$ > $Zn^{+{+}}$ > $Cd^{+{+}}$. The adsorption mechanism of $M^{+{+}}$ form of heavy metal could be presumed as the specific adsorption of $M^{+{+}}$ and the desorption of two $H^+$ from the surface aquo($OH_2$) and/or hydroxo(-OH) group for each mole of $M^{+{+}}$ adsorbed. A ring structure between $M^{+{+}}$ and two surface aquo and/or hydroxo groups was postulated. Nonspecific adsorption involved the adsorption of $MCl^+$ and the desorption of one H+ from the surface aquo and/or hydroxo groups for each mole of $M^{+{+}}$ adsorbed. A single bond structure in which $MCl^+$ replaced one $H^+$ from the surface aquo and/or hydroxo groups was postulated. The ratio of specific to nonspecific adsorption increased with increasing pH.
