This paper aims to assess the applicability of the Runge Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin-Direct Ghost Fluid Method to the internal explosion inside a water-filled tube, which previously was studied by many researchers in separate works. Once the explosive charge located at the inner center of the water-filled tube explodes, the tube wall is subjected to an extremely high intensity fluid loading and deformed. The deformation causes a modification of the field of fluid flow in the region near the water-structure interface so that has substantial influence on the response of the structure. To connect the structure and the fluid, valid data exchanges along the interface are essential. Classical fluid structure interaction simulations usually employ a matched meshing scheme which discretizes the fluid and structure domains using a single mesh density. The computational cost of fluid structure interaction simulations is usually governed by the structure because the size of time step may be determined by the density of structure mesh. The finer mesh density, the better solution, but more expensive computational cost. To reduce such computational cost, a non-matched meshing scheme which allows for different mesh densities is employed. The coupled numerical approach of this paper has fewer difficulties in the implementation and computation, compared to gas dynamics based approach which requires complicated analytical manipulations. It can also be applied to wider compressible, inviscid fluid flow analyses often found in underwater explosion events.

We present an innovative means of numerically treating interfaces associated with chemically active energetic materials. Recent advances in wave tracking technique based on the Ghost Fluid Concept is extended to handle multi-material multi-phase interfaces associated with chemical environment associated with explosion. We show several work-in-progress applications of our code, including the impact problems involving both energetic and inert elements. Accurate modeling of the equation of state and the constitutive relations are also discussed
A two-layer incompressible time-accurate Euler solver is applied to analyze flow fields around a submerged body moving at a critical speed near a pycnocline. Discontinuities in the dependent variables across the material interface are captured without any dissipation or oscillation using the ghost fluid method on an unstructured grid. It is shown that the material interlace has significant effects on forces acting on a submerged body moving near a pycnocline regardless of the small difference in densities of two layers. Contrary to the shallow water waves, a submerged body can reach a critical speed at very low Froude number due to the small difference in the densities of the two layers.

Internal waves are computed using a ghost fluid method on an unstructured grid. Discontinuities in density and dynamic pressure are captured in one cell without smearing or oscillations along a multimaterial interface. A time-accurate incompressible Navier-Stokes/Euler solver is developed based on a three-point backward difference formula for the physical time marching. Artificial compressibility is introduced with respect to pseudotime and an implicit method is used for the pseudotime iteration. To track evolution of an interface, a level set function is coupled with the governing equations. Roe's flux difference splitting method is used to calculate numerical fluxes of the coupled equations. To get higher order accuracy, dependent variables are reconstructed based on gradients which are calculated using Gauss theorem. For each edge crossing an interface, dynamic pressure is assigned for a ghost node to enforce the continuity of total pressure along the interface. Solitary internal waves are computed and the results are compared with other computational and experimental results.

For the flow analysis of reactive compressible media involving energetic materials and metallic confinements, a Hydro-SCCM (Shock Compression of Condensed Matter) tool is developed for handling multi-physics shock analysis of energetics and inerts. The highly energetic flows give rise to the strong non-linear shock waves and the high strain rate deformation of compressible boundaries at high pressure and temperature. For handling the large gradients associated with these complex flows in the condensed phase as well as in the reactive gaseous phase, a new Eulerian multi-fluid method is formulated. Mathematical formulation of explosive dynamics involving condensed matter is explained with an emphasis on validating and application of hydro-SCCM to a series of problems of high speed multimaterial dynamics in nature.

Since the IB (Immersed Boundary) method, which can perform coupling analysis with objects and fluids having an impermeable boundary of arbitrary shape on a fixed grid system, has been developed, the IB method in various CFD models is increasing. The representative IB methods are the directing-forcing method and the ghost cell method. The directing-forcing type method numerically satisfies the boundary condition from the fluid force calculated at the boundary surface of the structure, and the ghost-cell type method is a computational method that satisfies the boundary condition through interpolation by placing a virtual cell inside the obstacle. These IB methods have a disadvantage in that the computational algorithm is complex. In this study, the simplified immersed boundary (SIB) method enables the analysis of temporary structures on a fixed grid system and is easy to expand to three proposed dimensions. The SIB method proposed in this study is based on a one-field model for immiscible two-phase fluid that assumes that the density function of each phase moves with the center of local mass. In addition, the volume-weighted average method using the density function of the solid was applied to handle moving solid structures, and the CIP method was applied to the advection calculation to prevent numerical diffusion. To examine the analysis performance of the proposed SIB method, a numerical simulation was performed on an object falling to the free water surface. The numerical analysis result reproduced the object falling to the free water surface well.

This paper presents a numerical analysis of behaviors of rear closer of vertical launch system under rocket plume based on fluid structure interaction analysis. The rocket plume loading is modeled by fully Eulerian method and elasto-plastic behavior of rear cover is calculated by total Lagrangian method based on a 9-node planar element. The interface motion and boundary conditions are described by a hybrid particle level-set method within the ghost fluid framework. We compare the fluid flow pattern between different rear closer models which are elast-plastic and rigid deformation.

This paper presents a numerical investigation of the deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) of flame acceleration by a shock wave filled with an ethylene-air mixture in bent tube. A model consisting of the reactive compressible Navier-Stokes equations and the ghost fluid method (GFM) for complex boundary treatment is used. A various intensities of incident shock wave simulations show the generation of hot spots by shock-flame interaction and the accelerated flame propagation due to geometrical effect. Also the first detonation occurs nearly constant chemical heat release rate, 20 MJ/($g{\cdot}s$). Through our simulation's results, we concentrate the complex confinement effects in generating strong shock wave, shock-flame interaction, hot spot and DDT in pipe.

This paper presents a numerical investigation on propagation of hydrocarbon (ethylene-air mixture) detonation in a deformable copper tube. In this study, we deal with interactions of multi-materials, gas and solid. In gas phase, the model consists of the reactive compressible Navier-Stokes equations and one step chemical reaction. Also we use Inviscid Euler equations in solid. In order to the interface tracking and the determination of boundary values, our model handle level-set and ghost fluid method. Through the numerical simulation results, we identify generations of expansion waves and interferences by the wall deformation. In addition, we predict the minimum copper tube thickness that ensures safety under an incident detonation.
Numerical simulation is performed for microdroplet deposition on a pre-patterned micro-structure. The level-set method for tracking the liquid-gas interface is extended to treat the immersed (or irregular-shaped) solid surface. The no-slip condition at the fluid-solid interface as well as the matching conditions at the liquid-gas interface is accurately imposed by incorporating the ghost fluid approach based on a sharp-interface representation. The method is further extended to treat the contact angle condition at an immersed solid surface. The present computation of a patterning process using microdroplet ejection demonstrates that the multiphase characteristics between the liquid-gas-solid phases can be used to improve the patterning accuracy.
