Prevalence and Risk Factors of Clonorchiasis among Residents of Riverside Areas in Muju-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea

  • We evaluated the status of Clonorchis sinensis infection and potential risk factors among residents of riverside areas (Geumgang) in Muju-gun, Jeollabuk-do (Province), Korea. From January to February 2010, a total of 349 (171 males, 178 females) stool samples were collected and examined by the formalin-ether concentration technique. Also, village residents were interviewed using questionnaires to obtain information about C. sinensis infection-related risk factors. Overall egg-positive rate of C. sinensis was 13.2%. Egg-positive rates were significantly higher in males, farmers, and residents who had lived there more than 20 years, and in residents who had eaten raw freshwater fish than in opposite groups, respectively. However, there was no significant difference between age groups, education levels, cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, health status, past history of infection, and experience of clonorchiasis medication and examination. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine risk factors for clonorchiasis. On univariate analysis, the odds ratios for males, farmers, those who had lived there more than 20 years, and who had eaten raw freshwater fish were 2.41, 4.44, 3.16, and 4.88 times higher than those of the opposites, respectively. On multivariate analysis, the odds ratio of residents who had eaten raw freshwater fish was 3.2-fold higher than that of those who had not. These results indicate that residents living in Muju-gun, along the Geum River, Korea, have relatively high C. sinensis egg-positive rates, and the habit of eating raw freshwater fish was the major factor for the maintenance of clonorchiasis.

Polygonum plebeium R.Br. (Polygonaceae): An Unrecorded Species in Korea (한반도 미기록 식물: 애기마디풀(Polygonum plebeium R.Br.; Polygonaceae))

  • We report Polygonum plebeium R.Br. (Polygonaceae) as an unrecorded species from the Geumgang River, Buyeo-gun; Galmae-dong, Guri-si; the Chungju Reservoir, Jecheon-si; the Daecheong Reservoir, Okcheon-gun; and the Daecheong Reservoir, Daejeon, in Korea. It is distinguished from P. aviculare by pedicels that articulate in the middle and by its smooth and shiny achenes. The new Korean name, 'Ae-Gi-Ma-Di-Pul', is given considering the small-sized plant. In this study, a description and illustrations of the species and photos of the habitat are provided.

A Study on the Characteristics of Stream Flow Path and Water System Distribution in Gugok Garden, Korea (한국 구곡원림(九曲園林)의 하천 유로 및 수계별 분포 특성)

  • In this study, the water flow system by measuring the flow-way type and distance of flow path that composes the Gugok through literature survey, field survey, and map work on Gugok gardens in Korea whose existence has been confirmed, while investigating and analyzing watersheds, river orders, and river grades. It was intended to reveal the watershed distribution and stream morphological characteristics of the Gugok gardens and to use them as basic data for future enjoyment and conservation of the Gugok gardens. The conclusion of the study is as follows. First, Of the 93 Gugok gardens that have been confirmed to exist, it was found that 11 places(11.8%) were found to have a descending(top-down) type of Gugok that develops while descending along a stream. Second, As a result of analysis of the length of the flow path for each valley, Okryudonggugok(玉流洞九曲, Namsan-gugok) in Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do was found to have the shortest length of 0.44km among the surveyed valleys, while the flow distance of Muheulgugok(武屹九曲) located in Seongju-gun and Gimcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do was 31.1km, showing the longest flowing distance. The average flow path length of the Gugok Garden in Korea was 6.24km, and the standard deviation was 4.63km, indicating that the deviation between the 'curved type'e and the 'valley type' was severe. In addition, 14(15.1%) Gugok gardens were found to be partially submerged due to dam construction. Third, As a result of analyzing the waters area where Gugok garden is located, the number of Nakdong river basins was much higher at 52 sites(55.9%), followed by the Hangang river basin at 27 sites(28.7%), the Geum river basin at 9 sites(9.7%), and the Yeongsan river and Seomjin river basins at 5(5.4%). Fourth, All Gugok gardens located in the Han river region were classified as the Han river system, and the Gugok garden located on the Nakdong river was classified as the main Nakdong river system, except for 7 places including 5 places in the Nakdong Gangnam Sea water system and 2 places in the Nakdong Gangdong sea water system. As a result of synthesizing the river order of the flow path where Gugok garden is located, Gugok, which uses the main stream as the base of Gugok, is 3 places in the Hangang water system, 5 places in the Nakdong river system, 2 places in the Geumgang water system, and 1 place in the Yeongsangam/Seomjin river system. A total of 11 locations(11.5%) were found, including 36 locations(38.2%) in the first branch, 29 locations(31.2%) in the second branch, and 16 locations(17.0%) in the third branch. And Gugok garden, located on the 4th tributary, was found to be Taehwa Five-gok(太華五曲) set in Yonghwacheon Stream in Cheorwon in the Han river system, and Hoenggyegok(橫溪九曲) in Yeongcheon Hoenggye Stream in the Nakdong river system. Fifth, As a result of the river grade analysis of the rivers located in the Gugok garden Forest, the grades of the rivers located in the Gugok garden were 13 national rivers(14.0%), 7 local first-class rivers(7.5%), and 74 local second-class rivers(78.5%) was shown.

A Study on Analysis of Level Observation Network for Water Resources Management of Geumgang River Basin (금강 권역 수자원 관리를 위한 수위관측망 분석 연구)

  • 국가적 차원에서 물을 사용하고 통제하는 일은 국민의 생활에 큰 영향을 주고 있기 때문에 대부분의 나라들은 주어진 여건에 맞게 효율적으로 물을 사용하고 홍수와 가뭄으로부터 국민의 생명과 재산을 보호하기 위해 많은 일들을 하고 있다. 이와 같은 목적으로 우리나라에서는 국가유량측정망을 구축하여 2007년부터 국가적인 차원에서 유량측정을 수행하고 있다. 하지만 국가유량측정망의 경우 유량자료의 제공에 주 목적이 포함되어 있어 실제 유량자료만이 아닌 수위자료만의 목적으로 운영되고 있는 수위관측소에 대한 평가가 부족한 것이 현실이다. 본 연구에서는 치수, 이수, 환경 목적을 위한 유량측정 지점 뿐만아니라 재난, 댐, 유지유량 관리 등과 같은 추가적인 목적으로 수위자료를 활용하는 지점들에 대하여 하천의 최상류 지점에서 하구까지 모든 지점에 대한 신뢰성 있는 수위정보를 실시간으로 파악할 수 있는 수위관측망을 구축하는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위하여 금강홍수통제소, 한국수자원공사, 환경부에서 운영하는 수위관측소를 대상으로 홍수예보, 홍수 통제시설, 재난관리, 수자원 관리 및 공급, 수리권 갈등, 수질 등과 같은 다중목적을 적용하여 기존 관측소를 활용 목적별로 평가 하여, 각 기관의 중복투자에 따른 손실을 최소화 하고, 최적의 장소에 수위관측망을 구축하는 것이다. 이와 같이 도시, 댐 저수지 운영, 산간 및 농촌 지역 등의 현재 운영되고 있는 수위관측소 현황을 파악 한 결과 국토해양부 91개소, 한국수자원공사 18개소, 지자체 35개소, 환경부 26개소를 운영하고 있으며, 이중 환경부와 중복으로 검토된 지점은 15개 지점으로 나타났다. 최종적으로 수위관측소 운영 목적 및 지형학적 검토를 통하여 수위관측망을 검토한 결과 금강 권역의 하천 재난, 운영, 유지를 위해서 103개소의 수위관측소가 필요한 것으로 평가 되었다.

Estimating the Return Flow of Irrigation Water for Paddies Using Hydrology-Hydraulic Modeling (수리·수문해석 모델을 활용한 농업용수 회귀수량 추정)

  • Irrigation return flow plays an important role in river flow forecasting, basin water supply planning, and determining irrigation water use. Therefore, accurate calculation of irrigation return flow rate is essential for the rational use and management of water resources. In this study, EPA-SWMM (Environmental Protection Agency-Storm Water Management Model) modeling was used to analyze the irrigation return flow and return flow rate of each intake work using irrigation canal network. As a result of the EPA-SWMM, we tried to estimate the quick return flow and delayed return flow using the water supply, paddy field, drainage, infiltration, precipitation, and evapotranspiration. We selected 9 districts, including pumping stations and weirs, to reflect various characteristics of irrigation water, focusing on the four major rivers (Hangang, Geumgang, Nakdonggang, Yeongsangang, and Seomjingang). We analyzed the irrigation period from May 1, 2021 to September 10, 2021. As a result of estimating the irrigation return flow rate, it varied from approximately 44 to 56%. In the case of the Gokseong Guseong area with the highest return flow rate, it was estimated that the quick return flow was 4,677 103 m3 and the delayed return flow was 1,473 103 m3 , with a quick return flow rate of 42.6% and a delayed return flow rate of 13.4%.
