This study investigated the effects of the steeping condition and salinity stress on the quality properties of germinated black soybean. The absorbed water content increased drastically in six hours with the increase in the steeping time and the temperature. The pH decreased as the steeping temperature increased. A gradual increase in the dissolution of the anthocyanin was observed with the steeping time. The adequate steeping conditions were found to have been six hours at $25^{\circ}C$, which showed the needed absorbed water content within a short time. The germination percentage of the black soybeans decreased with the increase in the NaCl concentration. The pinitol and total phenolics contents showed the highest values under the concentrations of 0.7% and 0.3-0.5% NaCl, respectively. The flavonoid content was highest at the 0.1% NaCl concentration. Consequently, the salinity stress during the germination of the black soybeans enhanced the pinitol content and lowered the blood sugar, which gives it an advantage as a functional food material.
This study was carried out to breed a self-compatible variety of Tiger Lily from the seedlings originated from Chinju city, Gyeongsangnam-do. The morphological characteristics, ploidy, and the resistance of seedlings to virus infection were investigated. A progeny test was also conducted to examine whether the propagated progenies had the same characteristics as the mother plant. The self-compatible diploid lily variety developed in this study showed a tall type like native triploid lily, Lilium tigrinum, and bulbils were formed on both lily varieties. The morphological characteristics of the flowers and leaves were not much different between the varieties, while the size of the bulbils and bulbs showed significant differences. The percentage of seed generation by self-pollination was 72.6% for the self-compatible variety, while there was no seed generated for native triploid lily. The number of chromosome was 2n = 26 (x = 13, diploid) for the self-compatible variety, while 2n = 39 (x = 13, triploid) in native lily variety. The progenies of the self-compatible diploid lily variety showed the same characteristics as those of its mother plant in morphology, seed germination, and polyploidy. The mother plant of the self-compatible diploid lily variety showed 58% pollen germination and the 2-year-old and 3-year-old progenies showed similar germination percentages. The pollen grains of Korean native triploid lily, however, never germinated.
This work aims to obtain basic information for seed propagation of Hydrangea serrata for. acuminata. The germination percentage of the seeds taken on 15 November, 30 December, and 23 January was $90.0{\pm}4.16%$, $84.4{\pm}5.52%$, and $88.9{\pm}2.40%$, respectively. This suggest that seeds of Hydrangea serrata for. acuminata are non-dormant seeds. The optimum temperature for germination was $25^{\circ}C$ and light was necessary. Most of the growth parameters (shoot and leaf length, stem diameter, root length, no. of roots, T/R ratio, and fresh and dry wts.) were significantly greater at $25/20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ than at the other temperatures. Low T/R ratio at relatively cool temperatures (15 and $20^{\circ}C$) was caused by suppressed top growth. In light quality treatment, red light (RL) significantly enhanced stem elongation. The greatest photosynthetic pigments (total chl, chl a/b, and carotenoid) were observed in seedlings grown in blue light (BL), followed by seedlings grown in RL+BL. When blue light was added, higher pigment contents were found. Effect of plug cell size (50, 72, 128, 162 and 200 cells) on the growth of seedlings was investigated. The highest top growth was observed in seedlings grown in 50 cell trays, followed by seedlings grown in 72, 128, 162, and 200 cell trays. However, there was no significant differences between 162 and 200 cell trays. Especially, smaller size leaves were observed in seedlings grown in smaller cell trays (lower volume and high plant density).
The fertilities of indigenous and cultivated mulberry species(varieties) which were polli nated with Morus nigra L. brought from Turkey were investigated. The percentage of ripening sorosis was very high in indigenous species, Morus tiliaefolia Makino and cultivated variety, Keomseolppong and it was around 50% in both Daeryukppong and Cheongilppong However, the flowers of Morus bombycis Koidz. (BOM5-8) and Yongcheonppong fell after pollination. Looking at the sizes of seeds, they are also various. Generally, it was extremely small in Morus tiliaefolia, but it was medium in Keomseolppong, Cheongilppong and Daeryukppong. The fertilization percentage was generally low with 32-42% in the varieties, but it was comparatively high in Keomseolppong and Morus tiliaefolia. The seed germination percentages of Daeryukppong and Morus tiliaefolia are 88.0% and 23.6%, respectively, but it was below 2% in Cheongilppong and Keomseolppong. The cross success percentages are 14.2% and 8.0% in Daeryukppong and Morus tiliaefolia, respectively, but it was below 0.3% in Cheongilppong and Keomseolppong.
To achieve self-sufficiency in good production, cotton should be grown after barley in the southern part of Korea. But, this cropping system reduces cotton yields and fiber qualities in the current leading cotton varieties because of the short frost-free growth period. Ethrel-treated plots shortened the time to open boll by about 20days, increased the percentage of open bolls before the first frost from 38% to 93% and increased yield by 15-38%. There are not significant differences in staple length, tensile strength of the fiber, single bollweight, 100 seeds weight and germination percentage of the seeds between Ethrel-treated and untreated plots. Ethrel should be recommended to the farmers growing cotton after barley harvest.
The use of local seed provenance is often recommended in forest restoration. Early vigor is a combination of the performance of seed germination and emergence after planting. The ability of young Brant's oak plants to grow and develop after emergence and its dependence on local habitat conditions was investigated in this study. The effects of seed source and shade on early growing seedlings of Brant's oak (Quercus brantii L.) were determined in field measurements. Seeds of Quercus brantii L. were collected from 4 forest areas (seed sources) in southern Zagros (Provinces of Kohkilouyeh-Bouyer Ahmad and Fars) at altitudes of 850, 1,100, 1,500, 2,100 m a.s.l., and planted in a nursery constructed in southwestern Iran. According to a split-plot design consisting of four blocks, each containing two main treatment plots (no shading, partial shading), each main plot was sub-divided into four sub-plots (for elevations of 850, 1,100, 1,500 and 2,100 m). Results showed that shade treatments had significant effects on emergence percentage and rate, shoot length, shoot dry weight (SDW), root dry weight (RDW), leaf area (LA), and chlorophyll content. Ecological factors also had an effect on seed performance. Altitude of seed source had a very significant effect on root length, LA, SDW, and RDW. The seeds collected from 850 m a.s.l. elevation showed the highest performance, especially in leaf area, root length, shoot dry weight, and root dry weight. Our results showed that the altitude of 850 m a.s.l. was the best for collecting Brant's oak seeds.
Experiments were conducted with aims to (1) estimate the biomass yield potential, (2) characterize the biomass and digestible dry matter production, and (3) reveal the characteristic seedling establishment of a whole crop rice variety, Nogyangbyeo, in dry- and wet-seeded rice. Maximum aboveground total biomass of Nogyangbyeo was 18 t $ha^{-1}$ in dry-seeded rice and 20 t $ha^{-1}$ in wet-seeded rice. Biomass yield potential of Nogyangbyeo was lower than that of Dasanbyeo. Comparatively, Nogyangbyeo was straw-dependent and Dasanbyeo was grain-dependent for biomass accumulation. Percentage of digestible dry matter (DDM) was higher in panicles than straw. Digestible dry matter yield was determined mainly by biomass yield rather than DDM percentage. Number of seedling establishment in Nogyangbyeo was $73m^{-2}$ in dry-seeded rice and $109m^{-2}$ in wet-seeded rice. Poor seedling establishment of dry-seeded Nogyangbyeo in the field condition was the result of low seed germination under low temperature and poor seedling emergence by deep sowing. Low seedling emergence rate of Nogyangbyeo was attributed mainly to slow elongation growth by slow leaf development and partly to mesocotyl and 1st internode lengths, not to genetically defined leaf length. The slow elongation growth of Nogyangbyeo was the same even in the high daily mean temperature of $24^{\circ}C$. Results suggest DDM yield in rice can be improved simply by increasing biomass and whole crop rice varieties should be adaptable to direct-seeding.
Rough rice samples of Chucheongbyeo, Bongkwangbyeo and Hwaseongbyeo were collected by the National Agricultural Products Inspection Office. Drying methods of rough rice were sun drying and forced ventilation drying by an oven dryer and temperature of the oven dryer was set to 43, 60, 70, or 8$0^{\circ}C$. Moisture content of samples was reduced from ca. 20% to 15% at the end of drying, and additionally to 12.5 % for the drying at 8$0^{\circ}C$. Characteristics related to rice grain quality, milling recovery, ratio of broken and cracked rices, percentage of germination, and sensory scores of the cooked rices were evaluated. Yielding percentage of brown rice and polished rice remarkably decreased by drying at 8$0^{\circ}C$. Percentages of cracked rice and broken rice were within the criterion of the second grade government brown rice (20%) only in the sun dried and the rices dried at 43$^{\circ}C$, on the basis of damaged rice, opaque kernel rice and colored rice. Broken rice percentage of the polished rice was within the criterion for the standard of government rice (5%) in the sun dried and the rices dried at 43$^{\circ}C$. Germination percentage of rough rice was higher than 80% in sun drying and drying at 43$^{\circ}C$, but remarkably decreased by drying rice at 6$0^{\circ}C$ and over. Sensory palatability of the cooked rice decreased with increase in drying temperature. The present governmental method of judging rough rice on the basis of moisture content and appearance of the rough rice appears to be improved to include the ratio of broken and cracked rices.
This study was conducted to study the effects of temperature on the oviposition, feeding and emergence of the azuki bean weevil(ABW) (Callesobruchus chinensis L.) in the stored beans. And ovipositional preference, hatching and emergence on the preference and non-preference hosts were also investigated. ABW has four generations a year and overwinters as larva stage in the bean grains. Optimum oviposition temperature of the ABW ranges from $25^{\circ}C\;to\;30^{\circ}C$. Oviposition preference in different hosts was in the order of azuki bean, mung bean, soy bean, kidney bean, black-soybean, pea. At $25^{\circ}C$, optimum development temperature emergence of period the ABW averaged 29 days on azuki bean, 31 days on mung bean, 49 days on soy bean, 46 days on black-soybean, 34 days on Pea. Percent hatch in different hosts was in the order of azuki bean, mung bean, soy bean, pea, black-soybean, kidney bean. But percent emergence was in the order of azuki bean, mung bean, pea, black-soybean, kidney bean. Especially, in azuki bean and mung bean, percentage of hatching and emergence was very high. And in soy bean and black-soybean, percentage of hatching was high but emergence was low. The kidney bean was hatching but not emergence at all. The longevity at the different temperatures appeared to be $4{\sim}5$ days at $35^{\circ}C,\;5{\sim}7$ days at $25^{\circ}C{\sim}30^{\circ}C$, $10{\sim}15$ days at $20^{\circ}C\;and\;19{\sim}24$ days at $15^{\circ}C$. Kidney bean of feeding non-preference host oviposited at Seed coat and Endosperm, but no larva developed. And cotyledon and embryo parts were not oviposited at all. The percentage of germination of egg laid bean grain and damaged bean grains was low. Especially, the percentage of germination of damaged bean grains was 0% on azuki bean, 5% on black-soy bean, 7% on Pea.
Seed size has been considered as an effective criteria for selection of the most vigorous seeds in sorghum [(Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench]. The smaller seeds were inferior to the larger sizes in emergence and grain yield. This study was conducted to determine germination rate, field emergence and vigor of sorghum for selection of high quality seed by different seed size. Sorghum cultivar of two (Hwanggeumchal and Tojong) were separated into five seed size proportion (<2.36, 2.80, 3.15, 3.35 and >3.55 mm diam.) according to seed size. The larger seed was more higher 1,000 seeds weight, seed density, carbohydrates and protein content. Total seed germination performing varied 92% at the largest size (>3.55 mm diam.) frequently inferior to slightly 67% at smaller seed (2.36 to 2.80 mm diam.) in the standard germination test. Seed size did have a significant effect on mean emergence time (MET) and maximum emergence rate index (ERI) and percentage of emergence. It should be noted that the results refer to MET of sorghum seeds ranging from 4.26 to 4.74 days. The relationship of seed size was not only to stand establishment but to grain yield. Yield was most affected by seed size and large seeds were superior to the smaller seed in 25~37% of the cases. Especially, yield was significant under 3.15 mm the beginning.
