Geostatistical Integration of Multi-Geophysical Data Measured at Different Ranges (측정 범위가 다른 다중 물리 탐사 자료의 지구통계학적 복합 해석)

  • Integrated interpretation of multi-geophysical data has been continuously used in terms that it has provided more confident information than the result from single-geophysical data. Especially, geostatistical integration has its own superiority that it is possible to deal with spatial characteristics as well as physical properties of survey data and the process of integration is clear. This paper further extends the previous work of geostatistical inversion for integrated interpretation. In this paper, we propose a new way of dealing with the case that the multi-geophysical data do not share the measurement range. According to the geostatistical kriging, the closer between the measurement points, the smaller kriging variance we get, and vice versa. We used this spatial properties as a weighting value to the process of geostatistical inversion for the geophysical data integration. An objective way to integrate different kinds of geophysical data measured at different ranges is provided with this algorithm.

Geophysical Surveys for Investigating the Groundwater Environment of the Chojeong, Chungbuk (충북 초정지역의 지하수환경 조사를 위한 지표지구물리탐사)

  • Geophysical data sets from the Chojeong area in the Chungbuk-Do are compositely studied in terms of multi-attribute interpretation for the subsurface mapping of shallow fracture zones, associated with groundwater reservoir. Utilizing a GIS software, the attribute data are implemented to a database; a lineament from the satellite image, electrical resistivities and its standard deviation, radioactivity, seismic velocity, bedrock depth from exploration data. In an attempt to interpret 1-D electrical sounding data in 2-D and 3-D views, 2-D resistivities structures are firstly made by interpolating 1-D plots. Reconstruction of a resistivity volume is found to be an effective scheme for subsurface mapping of shallow fracture zones. Shallow fracture zones in the southeastern part of the study area are commonly correlated in the various exploration data.

  • A new way to integrate various geophysical information for evaluation of RQD was developed. In this study, we did not directly define the RQD value where borehole data are not sampled. Instead, we infer the probability of RQD values with prior probability from borehole direct data, and secondary supporting probability from resistivity and seismic tomography data. For the integration, we applied the geostatstical indicator kriging to get prior probability of RQD value, and indicator kriging with soft data to get the supporting probability from resistivity and seismic data. And we finally use the permanence ratio rule to integrate these information. The finally obtained result was also analyzed to fully utilize the probabilistic features. We show the probability of wrongly classifying the RQD evaluation and vice versa. This result may be used for decision making process based on the geophysical exploration.

Geophysical Exploration on Unconformity-type Uranium Deposit in Athabaska Basin, Canada (캐나다 아타바스카 분지 부정합형 우라늄광상 물리탐사 사례)

  • Geophysical survey for unconformity-type uranium deposit applied to this study area in Athabaska Basin, Canada were carried out airborne TEM and magnetic, resistivity-induced polarization (DC-IP), puser seismic reflection and well-logging method. The results of airborne survey interpreted the lithological boundary, geological structures, and conductors. Also, these results decided to main targets for ground DC-IP survey. The Low resistivity and the high chargeability slices of 3D modeling interpreted from DC-IP survey response for conductors related to hydrothermal alteration zones and fault-controlled graphitic zones occurring at the unconformity-type uranium deposit, and they confirmed by diamond drilling. Seismic results interpreted to lake bottom surface, alluvium layer and intra-sandstone faults. We suggest the resonable field data acquisition of DC-IP method on the land or the lake in Athabaska Basin.

  • As a consequence of geophysical surveys for large-scale constructions and ground investigations, huge amount of geophysical data are collected. However, due to the lack of the systematic management of such data, most of them are used temporarily and kept in dead storage, which in turn leads the abuse of social properties. To propose the solution of this kind of problem, geophysical data are kept in database using geographical information system (GIS). The introduction of GIS in geophysical data management allows the efficiency in data management and user-friendliness in data access. This data management system is especially appropriate for the many geological companies and the government organizations in systematic data management and sharing so that the time ,md financial expenses are greatly reduced. This system even provides the basic data services for the efficient development and conservation of the surface and underground spaces.

Detecting buried human remains using near-surface geophysical instruments

  • To improve the recovery rate of unlocated buried human remains in forensic investigations, there is scope to evaluate and develop techniques that are applicable to the Australian environment. I established controlled gravesites (comprising shallow buried kangaroos, pigs, and human cadavers) in South Australia, to allow the methodical testing of remote sensing equipment for the purpose of grave detection in forensic investigations. Eight-month-old pig graves are shown to provide more distinct identifying results using ground-penetrating radar when compared to four-year-old kangaroo graves. Two further aspects of this research are presented: information (obtained from a survey) relating to the police use of geophysical instruments for locating buried human remains, and the use of electrical resistivity for locating human remains buried in a coffin. The survey of Australian police jurisdictions, covering the period 1995-2000, showed that police searches for unlocated bodies have not successfully located human remains using any geophysical instruments (such as ground-penetrating radar, magnetometers, or electrical resistivity). Lower resistivity readings were found coincident with the 150-year-old single historical burial in a heavily excavated field, in a situation where its exact location was previously unknown.

Mobile Robot Based Down-Scaled Mineral Resources Exploration Test System (이동로봇을 이용한 자원탐사 축소모형 실험 시스템 구축 응용)

  • This paper presents mobile robot based down-scale mineral resources exploration test system for the USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network) based exploration. The system emulates the actual exploration environment. Underneath the metal free test plate, a metal object is attached. A magneto-meter mounted mobile robot runs around on the plate to find the metal. The measured magneto-meter values are transferred to the host PC via wireless network. The system enables to improve the reliability of simulation as well as to help efficient exploration system design. Metal-detecting experiments were carried out to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed system.
