In this paper, 6/4 Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) which has simple structure and little switching element is selected basic analysis model. In order to reduce torque ripple causing noise and vibration, we execute optimization of geometric parameters (stator and rotor pole arc) and electrical parameters (turn-on angle and turn-of angle) by means of combining Fletcher-Reeves's Conjugate Directions and Finite Element Method (FEM) considering driving circuits. When considering the switching condition according to inductance profile, torque characteristics is influenced by geometric and electrical parameters importantly. The pole arc and switching angle of the optimum can also obtain the low torque ripple without high currents.

This paper presents a numerical study on the performance improvement of axial-flow pump with guide vanes. Design optimization for guide vanes in an axial-flow pump has been studied through the implementation of a commercial CFD code and DOE (design of experiments). We also discussed how to improve the performance of the axial-flow pump by designing the guide vanes. Geometric design variables were defined by the meridional plane and vane plane development of guide vanes. The effect of hub tip ratio analyzed the meridional plane of guide vanes. The importance of the geometric design variables was analyzed using $2^k$ factorial designs. The objective functions for guide vane geometric variables were defined as the total efficiency and the total head at the design flow rate. From the $2^k$ factorial design results, the important design variables were found and the performance was increased in comparison with the base design model.

For small-scale vector data, restrictions on watermark scheme capacity and robustness limit the use of copyright protection. A watermarking scheme based on robust geometric features and capacity maximization strategy that simultaneously improves capacity and robustness is presented in this paper. The distance ratio and angle of adjacent vertices are chosen as the watermark domain due to their resistance to vertex and geometric attacks. Regarding watermark embedding and extraction, a capacity-improved strategy based on quantization index modulation, which divides more intervals to carry sufficient watermark bits, is proposed. By considering the error tolerance of the vector map and the numerical accuracy, the optimization of the capacity-improved strategy is studied to maximize the embedded watermark bits for each vertex. The experimental results demonstrated that the map distortion caused by watermarks is small and much lower than the map tolerance. Additionally, the proposed scheme can embed a copyright image of 1024 bits into vector data of 150 vertices, which reaches capacity at approximately 14 bits/vertex, and shows prominent robustness against vertex and geometric attacks for small-scale vector data.

The optimal design code of an axial flow pump has been developed to determine geometric and fluid dynamic variables under hydrodynamic as well as mechanical design constraints. The design code includes the optimization of the complete radial distribution of the geometry by determining the coefficients of 2$^{nd}$ order polynomials to represent the three-dimensional geometry. The optimization problem has been formulated with a nonlinear multivariable objective function, maximizing the efficiency and stall margin, while minimizing the net positive suction head required. Calculation of the objective function is based on the mean streamline analysis and through-flow analysis using the present state-of-the-art model. The optimal solution is calculated using the penalty function method in which the genetic optimizer is employed. The optimized efficiency and design variables are presented in this paper as a function of non-dimensional specific speed in the range, 2$\leq$$n_{s}$$\leq$10. The results can be used in preliminary design of axial flow pumps.

This paper presents optimal design of controllable magnetorheological (MR) shock absorbers for passenger vehicle. In order to achieve this goal, two MR shock absorbers (one for front suspension; one for rear suspension) are designed using an optimization methodology based on design specifications for a commercial passenger vehicle. The optimization problem is to find optimal geometric dimensions of the magnetic circuits for the front and rear MR shock absorbers in order to improve the performance such as damping force as an objective function. The first order optimization method using commercial finite element method (FEM) software is adopted for the constrained optimization algorithm. After manufacturing the MR shock absorbers with optimally obtained design parameters, their field-dependent damping forces are experimentally evaluated and compared with those of conventional shock absorbers. In addition, vibration control performances of the full-vehicle installed with the proposed MR shock absorbers are evaluated under bump road condition and obstacle avoidance test.

In this paper, a new version of gravitational search algorithm based on opposition-based learning (OBGSA) is introduced and applied for optimum design of reinforced concrete retaining walls. The new algorithm employs the opposition-based learning concept to generate initial population and updating agents' position during the optimization process. This algorithm is applied to minimize three objective functions include weight, cost and $CO_2$ emissions of retaining structure subjected to geotechnical and structural requirements. The optimization problem involves five geometric variables and three variables for reinforcement setups. The performance comparison of the new OBGSA and classical GSA algorithms on a suite of five well-known benchmark functions illustrate a faster convergence speed and better search ability of OBGSA for numerical optimization. In addition, the reliability and efficiency of the proposed algorithm for optimization of retaining structures are investigated by considering two design examples of retaining walls. The numerical experiments demonstrate that the new algorithm has high viability, accuracy and stability and significantly outperforms the original algorithm and some other methods in the literature.
This work presents numerical optimization for design of staggered arrays of dimples printed on opposite surfaces of a cooling channel with a fast and elitist Non-Dominated Sorting of Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) of multi-objective optimization. As Pareto optimal front produces a set of optimal solutions, the trends of objective functions with design variables are predicted by hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The problem is defined by three non-dimensional geometric design variables composed of dimpled channel height, dimple print diameter, dimple spacing and dimple depth to maximize heat transfer rate compromising with pressure drop. Twenty designs generated by Latin hypercube sampling were evaluated by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver and the evaluated objectives were used to construct Pareto optimal front through hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The optimum designs were grouped by k-mean clustering technique and some of the clustered points were evaluated by flow analysis. With increase in dimple depth, heat transfer rate increases and at the same time pressure drop also increases, while opposite behavior is obtained for the dimple spacing. The heat transfer performance is related to the vertical motion of the flow and the reattachment length in the dimple.

A roller straightening process is a metal forming technique to improve the geometric quality of products such as straightness and flatness. The geometrical quality can be enhanced by eliminating unnecessary deformations produced during upstream manufacturing processes and minimizing any detrimental internal stress during the roller straightening process. The quality of steel cords can be achieved by the roller straightening depends the process parameters. Such process parameters are the roll intermesh, the roll pitch, the diameter of rolls, the number of rolls and the applied tension. This paper is concerned with the design optimization of the roller straightening process for steel cords with the aid of elasto-plastic finite element analysis. Effects of the process parameters on the straightness of the steel cord are investigated by the finite element analysis. Based on the analysis results, the optimization of the roller straightening process is performed by the response surface method. The roller straightening process using optimum design parameters is carried out in order to confirm the quality of the final products.
In this paper, the optimal design of vibration control system for smart structures has been investigated semi-analytically via the optimization of geometric parameters like the placements and sizes of piezoelectric sensors and actuators (S/As) bonded on the structures. The criterion based on the maximization of energy dissipation was adopted for the optimization of the control system. Based on the sensing and actuating equations, the total energy stored in the system which is used as the objective function was analytically derived with design variables explicitly presented. Two cases of single and combined vibration modes were addressed for a simply supported beam and a simply supported cylindrical shell. For single vibration mode, the optimal distributions of the piezoelectric S/As could be obtained analytically. However, the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) method has to be employed to solve those which violated the prescribed constraints and to solve the case of combined vibration modes. The results of three examples, which include a simply supported beam, a simply supported cylindrical shell and a simply supported plate, showed good agreement with those obtained by the Genetic Algorithm (GA) method. Moreover, in comparison with the GA method, the proposed method is more effective in obtaining better optimization results and is much more efficient in terms of computation time.
