  • Fiber waviness is one of manufacturing defects encountered frequently in thick composite structures. It affects significantly on the behavior as well as strength of thick composites. The effects of fiber waviness on tensile/compressive nonlinear elastic behavior and strength of thick composite with fiber waviness are studied theoretically and experimentally. FEA(Finite Element Analysis) models are proposed to predict tensile/compressive nonlinear behavior and strength of thick composites. In the FEA models, both material and geometric nonlinearities were incorporated into the model using energy density, iterative mapping and incremental method. Also Tsai-Wu criteria was adopted to predict the strength of thick composites with fiber waviness. Tensile and compressive tests were conducted on the specimens with uniform fiber waviness. It was observed that the degree of fiber waviness in composites significantly affected the nonlinear behavior and strength of the composites

  • This paper presents a displacement-based finite element procedure for second-order distributed plasticity analysis of planar steel frames with semi-rigid beam-to-column connections under static loadings. A partially strain-hardening elastic-plastic beam-column element, which directly takes into account geometric nonlinearity, gradual yielding of material, and flexibility of semi-rigid connections, is proposed. The second-order effects and distributed plasticity are considered by dividing the member into several sub-elements and meshing the cross-section into several fibers. A new nonlinear solution procedure based on the combination of the Newton-Raphson equilibrium iterative algorithm and the constant work method for adjusting the incremental load factor is proposed for solving nonlinear equilibrium equations. The nonlinear inelastic behavior predicted by the proposed program compares well with previous studies. Coupling effects of three primary sources of nonlinearity, geometric imperfections, and residual stress are investigated and discussed in this paper.

  • Nonlinear models for a thin ring rotating at a constant speed are developed. The geometric nonlinearity of displacements is considered by adopting the Lagrange strain theory for the circumferential strain. By using Hamilton’s principle, the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations are derived, which describe the out-of-plane and in-plane bending, extensional and torsional motions. The natural frequencies are calculated from the linearized equations at various rotational speeds. Finally, the computation results from the nonlinear models are compared with those from a linear model. Based on the comparison, this study recommends which model is appropriate to describe the behavior of the rotating ring.

  • Determining of the shape in the process of design for natural draught cooling tower is very important, because the shape of hyperbolic shell is respond sensitively to dynamic behavior of the whole cooling tower against wind load. In engineering practice, the geometric parameters have been determining based on the natural frequency. This study analyses influence of the tower shell geometric parameters on the structural behavior. For three representative models were selected, they were analyzed based on evaluation of damage by means of nonlinear FE-method. As a result, a hyperbolic rotational shell with the small radius overall was the lowest damage index induced by sufficient capacity of the stress redistribution and thus a wind-insensitive structure.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to calculate the behaviors of inter-phase spacers to reduce the amplitude of galloping in conductors. In simulation, three phases and iced-single/two-bundles conductors with/without spacers are considered in viewpoint of standard cases. The implicit/explicit finite element methods are used to calculate the transient response with geometric nonlinear behavior. The ANSYS/LS-DYNA program is also applied. Calculation results can be used to predict the positions to insert the inter-phase spacers between conductors.

  • A new linkage framework between elastic shell element with finite rotation and computar-aided geometric design (CAGD) (or surface is developed in the present study. The framework of shell finite element is based on the generalized curved two-parametric coordinate system. To represent free-form surface, cubic B-spline tensor-product functions are used. Thus the present finite element can be directly linked into the geometric modeling produced by surface generation tool in CAD software. The efficiency and accuracy of the Previously developed linear elements hold for the nonlinear element with finite rotations. To handle the finite rotation behavior of shells, exponential mapping in the SO(3) group is employed to allow the large incremental step size. The integrated frameworks of shell geometric design and nonlinear computational analysis can serve as an efficient tool in shape and topological design of surfaces with large deformations.

  • The purpose of the present work is to study the parametric nonlinear vibration behavior of three layered symmetric laminated plate. In the analytical formulation; both normal and shear deformations are considered in the core layer by means of the refined higher-order zig-zag theory. Harmonic balance method in conjunction with Galerkin procedure is adopted for simply supported laminate plate, to obtain its natural and damping properties. For these aims, a set of complex amplitude equations governed by complex parameters are written accounting for the geometric nonlinearity and viscoelastic damping factor. The frequency response curves are presented and discussed by varying the material and geometric properties of the core layer.

  • The present paper deals with nonlinear deflection analysis of hyperelastic plates rested on elastic foundation and subject to a transverse point force. For modeling of hyperelastic material, three-parameter Ishihara model has been employed. The plate formulation is based on classic plate theory accounting for von-Karman geometric nonlinearity. Therefore, both material and geometric nonlinearities have been considered based on Ishihara hyperelastic plate model. The governing equations for the plate have been derived based on Hamilton's rule and then solved via Galerkin's method. Obtained results show that material parameters of hyperelastic material play an important role in defection analysis. Also, the effects of foundation parameter and load location on plate deflections will be discussed.

  • Wheel/Rail geometric constraint relationships, such as effective conicity and gravitational stiffness, strongly influence the lateral dynamics of railway vehicles. In general, these geometric contact characteristics are nonlinear functions of the wheelset lateral displacement. There is a need to develop a wheel/rail geometric contact simulation program for wheels and rails with arbitrary profiles for the prediction of the dynamic behavior of railway vehicles. An algorithm to simulate any combination of wheels and rails is employed and a GUI for easy analysis is constructed. The simulation program is applied to KTX which will run on both KTX and conventional rails, two rail standards having different rail profiles. The results show that the two rail systems have different geometric contact characteristic

  • In the development of sheet-handling machinery, it is important to predict the static and dynamic behavior of the sheets with a high degree of reliability because the sheets are fed and stacked at such a high speed. Flexible media behaves geometric nonlinearity of large displacement and small strain. In this paper, static and dynamic analyses of flexible media are performed by FEM considering geometric nonlinearity. Linear stiffness matrix and geometric nonlinear stiffness matrix based on the Co-rotational(CR) approach are derived and numerical simulations are performed by Updated Newton-Raphson(UNR) method and Newmark integration scheme.
