  • The purpose of this study is to develop a personal computer aided 3-D geometric modeller. To perform this study, we set up a cube, a cylinder, and a prism as a primitive in the first segment of this study. By modelling the 3-D object through their transformation, addition, and subtraction, we proved the validity of the developed algorithm and its computer program. Some examples show the results of applying the program to modelling a few simple shape of the machine parts. These results met the first aim of this study.

  • This paper introduces a geometric modelling system adopted in a newly developed preprocessor for finite element analysis of three dimensional structures. The formulation is characterized by hierarchical construction of structural model which consists of control points, curves, surfaces and solids. Various surface and solid modeling schemes based on blending functions and boundary representation are systematized for finite element mesh generation. The modeling system is integrated with model synthesis and operations which facilitate modelling of complex structures.

  • For generating NC machining data automatically, it is important to handle computer models such as geometric shape data including engineering specifications for the mechanical part to be manufactured. We proposed unique CAM system for a personal computer that can define the geometric shape in an ease manner and machine the sculptured surfaces of a mold cavity. In this paper, the theoretical basis of generation of high precision machining data for a mold cavity is obtained. The first is geometric modelling, and the second is high precision machining with an optimized tool path algorithm satisfying given tolerance limits. Especially, the bicubic Bezier basis function is adopted for a geometric modelling.

  • A study on the construction of a CAD/CAM system operated by 16 Bit PC basic language, for machining sculptured surface of die, was carried out. The system consists of 2 steps i.e., process for geometric modelling by wire frame and process for machining data generation. Geometric modelling for sculptured surface is made by the point data fitting, parallel sweeping, normal sweeping and linear connection of cross section curve. Machining data are gained by cutter off-set of geometric model data and machining carried out by DNC. This system is to be proved enough for rough cutting by actual machining experiment. But, for becoming a high level system, another method of cutter off-set has to be regarded and system must be reconstructed by another program language.

  • In this paper, a new end-milling force modelling technique was suggested by considering runout, and its result was compared with real measured force. The specific cutting force is the multiplication of cutting force coefficient and uncut chip thickness. This parameter was used for experimental modelling and prediction of theoretical force. These coefficients, which can be obtained by fitting measured average forces in several conditions, were used for the formulation of theoretical force. The mechanism of end-milling force with runout was developed in this research and its result was verified by comparing the fluctuating theoretical force and its measured one. The fluctuation of force was incurred by a geometric shape of workpiece and its runout in holding. The result of suggested force considering runout shows a good consistency with measured one. So this modelling method can be used effectively for a prediction of end-milling force with runout effect.

  • In this paper, method for mapping a three-dimensional shape into the two-dimensional plane will be introduced. This method is referred to geometric modelling and means a transformation between the flat sheet and final surface. The initial blank shape represents the original configuration of the final shape formed into three dimensional surface. The initial constant constant area mapping hypothesis was used in this paper. This technique will be applied to the basic data for an interactive computer design capable of dealing with typical stamping process, including deep parts and complex shapes.

  • The development of a finite element model for the geometric and material nonlinear analysis of bonded prestressed concrete continuous beams is presented. The nonlinear geometric effect is introduced by the coupling of axial and flexural fields. A layered approach is applied so as to consider different material properties across the depth of a cross section. The proposed method of analysis is formulated based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. According to the total Lagrangian description, the constructed stiffness matrix consists of three components, namely, the material stiffness matrix reflecting the nonlinear material effect, the geometric stiffness matrix reflecting the nonlinear geometric effect and the large displacement stiffness matrix reflecting the large displacement effect. The analysis is capable of predicting the nonlinear behaviour of bonded prestressed concrete continuous beams over the entire loading stage up to failure. Some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the proposed model.

  • A modelling method for the bending vibration analysis of rotating cantilever beams employing finite element method is presented in this paper. Different from the conventional modelling method in wh ich only Cartesian deformation variables are used, a non-Cartesian deformation variable is introduced and approximated to derive the equations of motion. Numerical results obtained by using the presented modelling method are compared to those obtained by using other methods in the related literature, and the accuracy of the presented method is verified through the comparison study. The presented modelling method is superior to other previous methods in a sense that several advantages of the previous methods are incorporated into the presented method.
