The purpose of this paper is to find a more accurate method to evaluate pedestrian wind by computational fluid dynamics approach. Previous computational fluid dynamics studies of wind environmental problems were mostly performed by simplified models, which only use simple geometric shapes, such as cubes and cylinders, to represent buildings and structures. However, to have more accurate and complete evaluation results, various shapes of blocking objects, such as trees, should also be taken into consideration. The aerodynamic effects of these various shapes of objects can decrease wind velocity and increase turbulence intensity. Previous studies simply omitted the errors generated from these various shapes of blocking objects. Adding real geometrical trees to the numerical models makes the calculating domain of CFD very complicated due to geometry generation and grid meshing problems. In this case the function of Porous Media Condition can solve the problem by adding trees into numerical models without increasing the mesh grids. The comparison results between numerical and wind tunnel model are close if the parameters of porous media condition are well adjusted.
A semi-Lagrangian finite element scheme with objective time stepping algorithm for solving viscoelastic flow problem is presented. The convection terms in the momentum and constitutive equations are treated using a quasi-monotone semi-Lagrangian scheme, in which characteristic feet on a regular grid are traced backwards over a single time-step. Concerned with the generalized midpoint rule type of algorithms formulated to exactly preserve objectivity, we use the geometric transformation such as pull-back, push-forward operation. The method is applied to the 4:1 planar contraction problem for an Oldroyd B fluid for both creeping and inertial flow conditions.
The Immersed boundary method(IBM) is one of CFD techniques which can simulate flow field around complex objectives using simple Cartesian grid system. In the previous studies the IBM has mostly been implemented to fractional step method based Navier-Stokes solvers. In these cases, pressure buildup near IB was found to occur when linear interpolation and stadard mass conservation is used and the interpolation scheme became complicated when higher order of interpolation is adopted. In this study, we implement the IBM to an incompressible Navier-Stokes solver which uses SIMPLE algorithm. Bi-linear and quadratic interpolation equations were formulated by using only geometric information of boundary to reconstruct velocities near IB. Flow around 2D circular cylinder at Re=40 and 100 was solved by using these formulations. It was found that the pressure buildup was not observed even when the bi-linear interpolation was adopted. The use of quadratic interpolation made the predicted aerodynamic forces in good agreement with those of previous studies.
NC cutting simulation is an important factor in the development of products. The geometric modelling of cutter swept surface should be done in NC cutting simulation. A part of cutter swept surface is a ruled surface blended with silhouette curve and cutter path. Finding an intersection point between cutter swept surface and a line is one of major problems in Z-map based cutting simulation. In this paper, cutter swept surface is defined parametrically and it's intersection point with Z-map is found in an exact form. Triangular grid Z-map based 3-axis NC cutting simulation is performed.
This paper is concerned with the erection and ultimate load test of dome shaped space structures by post-tensioning. It is a fast and economical method for constructing such a dome by post-tensioning of the cable in bottom chords. This structure consists of uniform pyramids in a flat layouts on the ground, and then the structure is shaped and erected into its final curved space structure. Ultimate load test was performed for dome shaped space structures. The feasibility of the proposed erection method and the reliability of the established geometric model were confirmed with numerical analysis and experimental investigation on a small scale steel model. As a results we can find the most reasonable modeling technique for the prediction of shape formation in practices and we can know the characteristic of the behaviour in ultimate load test for practical design purposes.
This paper develops an algorithm for efficiently computing the intersection points between rays and an object in a simulated radiograph. This algorithm allows interactive calculation of simulated radiographs for very complex parts. It needs a geometric model of a part which is approximated by a bounding surface made up of flat triangular polygons. Since rays have a point source, a perspective transformation is applied to convert the point source problem to one that has parallel rays. This permits to use a scan-line algorithm which utilizes the coherence of the grid of rays for the intersection calculations. The efficiency of the algorithm is shown by comparing compute time of the intersection calculations to a commercial software that computes each ray intersection independently.
Many researches have been investigating small direct-injection diesel engines using the spray impacting on walls. Those systems have one or more raised pips to break-up the fuel and spread it widely toward a desired direction in a combustion chamber. In this study, the sizes and heights of the pips are determined by using a computational fluid dynamics code employing non-orthogonal grid systems. In order to find out the suitable pip-shape to a small chamber, the spray behaviors, occupied spary volumes and averaged droplets sizes are calculated with the variation of shape of the pip, such as, size and heights and inclined degree. The desired shape of the impinging land is proposed for the design of combustion system in small diesel engines.
The 3-dimensional measurement using stereo vision system must achieve a camera calibration. So far, the 3-dimensional calibration technique that uses two-dimensional grid papar and a non-linear least square method has been developed and tested. But, this method is inefficient because it has many calculation procedure and a non-linear analysis. Therefore, this paper proposed the projective geometric method which produced the calibration parameter by vanishing point. The vanishing point is producted by a cross ratio and a parallel line pairs. The results of the computer simulation show utility of the proposed method.
In this paper, numerical study on a mixed-flow pump for irrigation and drainage has been performed based on three-dimensional viscous flow analysis. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model are discretized by finite volume approximations and solved by the commercial CFD code ANSYS CFX-11.0. A structured grid system is constructed in the computational domain, which has O-type grids near the blade surfaces and H/J-type grids in other regions. The numerical results were validated with experimental data for the heads and efficiencies at different flow coefficients. The efficiency at the design flow coefficient is evaluated with the variation of two geometric variables related to area of discharge and length of the vane in the diffuser. The results show that efficiency of the mixed-flow pump at the design flow coefficient is improved by the modifications of the geometry.
One of the most common applications of ferrocement is the manufacturing of thin stiffened plates which are prone to buckling. This study focuses on the investigation of the behavior of a ferrocement plate, stiffened in both directions by means of an appropriate grid of ribs. In the present paper detailed three-dimensional numerical Finite Element models are formulated for the simulation of the behavior of the structure under study, which are able to take into account both the geometric and material non-linearities that are present in the subject at hand (plasticity, cracking, large displacements). The difference among the formulated models lies on the use of different types of finite elements. The numerical results obtained by each model are compared and the most efficient model is determined. Finally, this model is in the sequel used for the further investigation of the effect of different parameters on the ultimate load capacity, such as the initial out-of-plane imperfection of the plate and the interaction between the axial loads in both directions.
