  • This paper presents a localization system based on the use of electric compass and tracking IR light source. Digital RGB(Red, Green, Blue)signal of digital CMOS Camera is sent to CPLD which converts the color image to binary image at 30 frames per second. CMOS camera has IR filter and UV filter in front of CMOS cell. The filters cut off above 720nm light source. Binary output data of CPLD is sent to DSP that rapidly tracks the IR light source by moving Camera tilt DC motor. At a robot toward north, electric compass signals and IR light source angles which are used for calculating the data of the location system. Because geomagnetic field is linear in local position, this location system is possible. Finally, it is shown that position error is within ${\pm}1.3cm$ in this system.

  • Space Physics Sensor onboard the KOMPSAT-1, which was launched at 1999, had transmitted ionospheric data during the solar maximum from June 2000 to August 2001. When the KOMPSAT-1 has passed the equatorial region, equatorial bubbles, in which the electron density abruptly decreases, had frequently been detected. Statistical analysis of the data obtained during the entire operational period shows equatorial bubbles frequently occur across the Atlantic region where the geomagnetic field strength is weak. Also, equatorial bubbles occur more frequently for lower Kp index. The results are in good agreement with the previous observations by DMSP satellites and radio experiments at the Peruvian sector The correlation between electron density and the electron temperature shows various behaviors from event to event.

  • The Global Positioning System (GPS) was developed for military purposes and developed as it is today by opening civilian signals (GPS L1 frequency C/A signals). The current satellite orbits the earth about twice a day to measure the position, and receives more than 3 satellite signals (initially, 4 to calculate even the time error). The three-dimensional position of the ground receiver is determined using the data from the radio wave departure time to the radio wave Time of Arrival(TOA) of the received satellite signal through trilateration. In the case of navigation using GPS in recent years, a location error of 5 to 10 m usually occurs, and quite a lot of areas, such as apartments, indoors, tunnels, factory areas, and mountainous areas, exist as blind spots or neutralized areas outside the error range of GPS. Therefore, in order to acquire one's own location information in an area where GPS satellite signal reception is impossible, another method should be proposed. In this study, IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit) combined with an acceleration and gyro sensor and a geomagnetic sensor were used to design a system to enable location recognition even in terrain where GPS signal reception is impossible. A method to track the current position by calculating the instantaneous velocity value using a 9-DOF IMU and a geomagnetic sensor was studied, and its feasibility was verified through production and experimentation.

  • This paper designs a smart safety measurement system with Bluetooth beacon sensor nodes that can provide risk detection and evacuation/countermeasure services. The Bluetooth beacon sensor nodes is easily able to be attached to old building wall or construction or civil structure with potential danger. The proposed smart safety measurement system transmits various sensor data such as acceleration, gyroscope, geomagnetic, pressure, altitude, temperature, humidity at the spot where Bluetooth beacon sensor nodes are installed, and we can use them for risk perception, prediction, and warning services. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed system, we performed filed tests which showed that measured displacement values of precast retaining walls were within the permitted displacement value of 38.5 mm.

  • SPS(Space Physics Sensor) onboard the KOMPSAT-I, which was launched at 1999, had transmitted ionospheric plasma density and electron temperature during the solar maximum from June 2000 to August 2001, SPS IMS onboard KOMPSAT-I occasionally detected abrupt plasma density enhancement in low-latitude region, in which the plasma density abruptly increases in a narrow region. Statistical analysis of the data obtained during the entire operational period shows that the occurrence probability of these events has its peak value at the Atlantic region and at the Hawaiian region where the geomagnetic field strength is weak. And the occurrence frequency has no correlation with Dst index or F10.7 index. The correlation between plasma density and the electron temperature shows a wide variety, but the anti-correlated cases are dominant.

  • Recently, navigation system is used to inform users of vehicle location and driving direction, moving distance and so on. This navigation uses GPS sensor for current location determination. The GPS sensor will determinate current coordinates by using triangulation algorithm. This characteristic bring about that the GPS signal is not available in the shadow region such as tunnel and urban canyon. Moreover, Even though the signal is available, inherent positional error rate of the GPS often results in the dislocation of vehicle. To solve, these problems, a new positioning system is proposed in the paper. The System utilizes geomagnetic sensors of smartphone, speed information of CAN of vehicle though bluetooth and WiFi APs for GPS shadow area. The experimental test shadows that the proposed system using multiple data is able to determine the position of vehicle in GPS shadow areas.

  • Recently, various networks have been introduced in the car of the internal and external sides. These have been integrated by one HMI(Human Machine Interface) to control devices of each network and provide information service. The existing vehicle navigation system, providing GPS based vehicle positioning service, has been included to these integrated networks as a default option. The GPS has been used to the most universal device to provide position information by using satellites' signal. But It is impossible to provide the position information when the GPS can't receive the satellites' signal in the area of tunnel, urban canyon, or forest canopy. Thus, this paper propose and implement the method of measuring vehicle position by using the sensing data of internal CAN network and external Wi-Fi network of the integrated car navigation circumstances when the GPS doesn't work normally. The results obtained by implementation shows the proposed method works well by map matching.

  • High energy charged particles are trapped by geomagnetic field in the region named Van Allen Belt. These particles can move to low altitude along magnetic field and threaten even low altitude spacecraft. Space Radiation can cause equipment failures and on occasions can even destroy operations of satellites in orbit. Sun sensors aboard Science and Technology Satellite (STSAT-l) was designed to detect sun light with silicon solar cells which performance was degraded during satellite operation. In this study, we try to identify which particle contribute to the solar cell degradation with ground based radiation facilities. We measured the short circuit current after bombarding electrons and protons on the solar cells same as STSAT-1 sun sensors. Also we estimated particle flux on the STSAT-l orbit with analyzing NOAA POES particle data. Our result clearly shows STSAT-l solar cell degradation was caused by energetic protons which energy is about 700keV to 1.5MeV. Our result can be applied to estimate solar cell conditions of other satellites.

  • In this paper, a GPS/MEMS IMU integrated navigation receiver module capable of operating in a high dynamic environment is designed and fabricated, and the results is confirmed. The designed module is composed of RF receiver unit, inertial measurement unit, signal processing unit, correlator, and navigation S/W. The RF receiver performs the functions of low noise amplification, frequency conversion, filtering, and automatic gain control. The inertial measurement unit collects measurement data from a MEMS class IMU applied with a 3-axis gyroscope, accelerometer, and geomagnetic sensor. In addition, it provides an interface to transmit to the navigation S/W. The signal processing unit and the correlator is implemented with FPGA logic to perform filtering and corrrelation value calculation. Navigation S/W is implemented using the internal CPU of the FPGA. The size of the manufactured module is 95.0×85.0×.12.5mm, the weight is 110g, and the navigation accuracy performance within the specification is confirmed in an environment of 1200m/s and acceleration of 10g.
