  • Tungsten carbide is widely used in carbide tools. However, its production process generates a significant number of end-of-life products and by-products. Therefore, it is necessary to develop efficient recycling methods and investigate the remanufacturing of tungsten carbide using recycled materials. Herein, we have recovered 99.9% of the tungsten in cemented carbide hard scrap as tungsten oxide via an alkali leaching process. Subsequently, using the recovered tungsten oxide as a starting material, tungsten carbide has been produced by employing a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) method. SHS is advantageous as it reduces the reaction time and is energy-efficient. Tungsten carbide with a carbon content of 6.18 wt % and a particle size of 116 nm has been successfully synthesized by optimizing the SHS process parameters, pulverization, and mixing. In this study, a series of processes for the high-efficiency recycling and quality improvement of tungsten-based materials have been developed.

  • Recently stereographic projection method has widely been adopted in Korea as a simple but effective way of anlalysing the rock slope stability at the preliminary stage of site investigation. In practice, however, not a few cases have been noted where the method. even with the aid of computer programme, was unproperly applied due to lack of experience in the process of collecting geological data, sorting them out and assessing the potential instability of rock block thereform. This paper will briefly describe basic principles of stereographic projection method and present several instances to discuss its merits and limitations when it is applied to the geological conditions of Korea.

  • For the development of geothermal energy, many different kind of geoscientific data including both surface geological data and underground geomechanical data, are acquired. Integration of such data itself for better understanding of underground condition is not a simple process due to complexity of the data, i.e. mixture of 20 and 3D data, mixture of geological data, geochemical data, geomechanical data and hydrogeological data. This paper reports a preliminary suggestion of GIS modeling for such specific purpose. Data used for GIS modeling mainly came from British case studies. The modeling is much more focused on the design of database for 3D underground geotechnical data in this study.

  • In this paper, we introduce the application of several currently-representative methods for mineral resources potential assessment on Geographic information system(hereinafter referred to as GIS), and combined with mineral resources potential assessment performed in China and with lead-zinc deposits taken as an example, summarized and divided minerals prediction and assessment models; on this basis, this paper presented the process of metallogenic prognosis based on MRAS platform, and made a simple analysis on existing problems.

  • Pultruded cross-sections are always thin-walled due to constraints in the manufacturing process. Thus, the buckling strength determines the overall strength of the member. The elastic buckling of pultruded angle sections subjected to direct compression is studied. The lateral-torsional buckling, very likely to appear in thin-walled cross-sections, is investigated. Plate theory is used to allow for cross-sectional distortion. Shear effects and bending-twisting coupling are accounted for in the analysis because of their significant role. A simplified approach for determining the maximum load of equal leg angle sections under compression is presented. The analytical results obtained in this study are compared to the manufacturer's design guidelines for compression members as well as with the design specifications for steel structural members. Experimental results are obtained for various length specimens of pultruded angle sections. The results presented in this paper correspond to actual pultruded equal leg angle sections being used in civil engineering structures.

  • Stone-monuments, distributed in this area, have been investigated and studied in geological and conservational points of view. They are seemed to have been built from the Shilla to Koryeo Kingdoms, although more systematic studies are needed. The used rocks in these monuments are mainly biotite granite of Jurassic age. They are strongly weathered and partly exfoliated along igneous lineation about 1-2 mm(maximum up to 5 mm). They are mainly effected by chemical weathering to be selectively dissolved and by various kind of moss. For conservation, it must be scientifically considered based on characteristics and kind of rock phase, factors on weathering process, situation and protection.

  • Generally gneiss regions catagolized as metamorphic ground are very complicated and difficult for geotenical engineer to establish stability, this slopes include falt zone and many folding structures. therefore the slope in this study is very complicated and highly wheathered and framentation conditions are irregular by this study, we hope that geotechical engineers who are confronted with the same complicated slope as this slope are doing his job easily and they know which system are adequate to establish the slope stability in large-scale slope with complicated geological structure, and besides through our work flow and modeling process, we hope that our study can be useful for geotenical engineer who may work slope design and construct in complicated ground.

  • We preliminarily describe the basic characteristics of the low-sulfidation epithermal gold deposits in East China. It can be divided into granite- and alkaline rock-related types. These gold deposits are structurally controlled by caldera, craters, diatremes and related faults, hosted in volcanic rocks, and characterized by alterations of adularia, chalcedony, quartz, sericite and calcite assemblages. The ore-forming ages are within three pulses of 180-188 Ma, 135-141 Ma, and ca. 120 Ma, which are geodynamically corresponding the collision orogenic process between North China and Yangtze cratons, transformation of the tectonic regime, and delamination of the lithosphere, respectively.

  • The induced learning retardation method involves the temporary inhibition of the artificial neural network’s active units from participating in the error reduction process during training. This stimulates the less active units to contribute significantly to reduce the network error. However, some less active units are not sensitive to stimulation making them almost useless. The network can then be pruned by removing the less active units to make it smaller and more efficient. This study focuses on making the network more efficient and accurate by developing the induced learning retardation and pruning sequence training method. The developed procedure results to faster learning and more accurate artificial neural network for satellite image classification.

  • The Chungnam basin is a crucial area for studying the Mesozoic crustal evolutionary history of the Korean Peninsula. This study reports the revised geology and new isotopic ages from the northeastern Chungnam Basin based on detailed geological mapping and LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb analysis. Our renewed geologic map defines intra-basin, basin-bounding, and basement fault systems closely related to hydrothermal gold-bearing quartz vein injections. Here, we propose the directions of (micro)structural and geochronological future work to address issues on the relationship between the tectonic process, basin evolution, and hydrothermal fluid migration in the southwestern Korean Peninsula.
