  • Due to the transformation to the intelligent information society, the rapid change of our life and environment is expected. The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST) introduced a five-year government supported research institution's planning and evaluation based on the mid-to long-term perspective. This study collects international benchmarking information including industry, academia, and research fields by collecting mid- and long-term strategy reports from public research institutes, surveys by experts from abroad universities and research institutes, and analyzing overseas market information reports. The British Geological Survey (BGS), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the japanese geological survey related institutes (AIST-GSJ) plans for three-dimensional national geological information, predictions of geological environmental disasters, and development of important metals and material in the low carbon economic transformation and in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The mid- and long-term program emphasizes basic and public research on geological information through abroad experts survey such as the IPGP-CNRS etc. The market analysis of the mining automation and digital map sectors has been able to derive the fields in which the role of public research institutes by the market is expected such as data collection on land and in the air, mobile or three-dimensional information production, smooth/fast/real-time maps, custom map design, mapping support to various platforms, geological environmental risk assessment and disaster management information and maps.

  • Geological structures such as fault and fracture patterns provide important information about preliminary exploration of mineralized areas and geological characterization. We apply a filtering method taking the sun's azimuth angle into account to a shaded relief image derived from a digital elevation model (DEM), by which even linear edges extending parallel to the sun direction can be effectively extracted. Then, Generalized Hough tranform is applied to extract lineanments which correspond to fault and fracture patterns.

  • With the development of semantic web technologies in information retrieval area, the necessity for thesaurus is recently increasing along with internet lexicons. A thesaurus is the combination of classification and a lexicon, and is the topic map of knowledge structure expressing relations among concepts(terms) subject to human knowledge activities such as learning and research using formally organized and controlled index terms for clarifying the context of superordinate and subordinate concepts. However, although thesaurus are regarded as essential tools for controlling and standardizing terms and searching and processing information efficiently, we do not have a Korean thesaurus for geology. To build a thesaurus, we need standardized and well-defined guidelines. The standardized guidelines enable efficient information management and help information users use correct information easily and conveniently. The present study purposed to build a thesaurus system with terms used in geology. For this, First, we surveyed related works for standardizing geological terms in Korea and other countries. Second, we defined geological topics in 15 areas and prepared a classification system(draft) for each topic. Third, based on the geological thesaurus classification system, we created the specification of geological thesaurus. Lastly, we designed and implemented an internet-based geological thesaurus system using the specification.

  • Recent interest in geological heritage has been increased in that it can be used as a basic data onto predicting the global environmental change of its containing information about past global environment. In addition, due to the characteristics of the geological heritage, it is easy to damage and difficult to recover without continuous preservation and management. However, there are more damages occurring because of the sporadic spatial distribution and ambiguous management authority of geological heritage. Therefore, an integrated management system is needed by determining the spatial distribution of geological heritage preferentially. In this study, the detailed criteria for assessment of value from the preliminary studies were applied and the geological heritage grade distribution map was generated by using geospatial data in Seoul metropolitan area. For this purpose, the list of geological heritage sites in the Seoul metropolitan area, which is the study area, were complied through a literature review. The geospatial database was designed and constructed by applying the detailed criteria for assessment of value from the preliminary studies. After the construction of the spatial database, a grade map of the geological heritage was created. As a result of the geological heritage grade map in the Seoul metropolitan area, there were more than 35% of the geological heritage in northern Gyeonggi provinces such as Yeoncheon city (18.8%), Pocheon city (10.6%) and Paju city (6.3%). It is followed by 18.1% in Incheon and 8.1% in Ansan, which is approximately 26.2% in western Gyeonggi Province. The geological age of the geological heritage was the highest at in the fourth stage of the Cenozoic era of 16.9%. Through the results of this study, the geological heritage data of the Seoul metropolitan area were extracted from existing literature data and converted into spatial information. It enables comparing the geological features with the spatial distribution of geological heritage. In addition, a management system has been established based on spatial information of constantly building geological heritage data. This provides the integrated management system of the geological heritage to manage authority so that it can be used as a basis for the development of the geological park. Based on the results of this study, it is considered to be possible to systematically construct and utilize the geological heritage across the country.

  • In Australia & Canada, architectural rock and aggregate are one of the mineral resources, and related data and information provided integrated with them. In these countries, the provided data and information, through the information system of local government and national geological survey organizations, are interactive maps, geological and thematic maps, exploration data set, 3 dimension geological models, minning rights status, survey reports and related papers etc. However, in case of Korea, aggregate and architectural rock are not assigned as the kind of mineral resources in accordance to domestic mining law, and related geological data and information are not provided from comprehensive mineral information system established in public geoscience organizations. And the administrative and informative management are conducted separately through the different governmental organizations such as Ministry of construction, Korea forest service, geoscience institute & Korea Mine & Reclamation Corporation. For securing the supply of architectural rock and aggregate resources, and for the convenience of their development & utilization, the unified information system and governance reform for the related industry is needed.

  • Urban geology is the study of urban geologic environments to provide a scientific basis for rational land use planning and urban development and provides information on geologic environments as a basis for city planners. Based on AEG recommendations, urban geological studies covered the urbanism and historical backgrounds, geological setting, engineering geological constraints and environmental assessments of understudied cities. The aim of this study is to provide a good view of urban geology of Tabriz city the capital of East Azerbaijan province in Iran. The topics of discussions about Tabriz city urban geology are included geologic (geomorphology, geology, climatology and hydrogeology), engineering geological (earthquake, landslide and geotechnical hazards investigations) and environmental characteristics (air, soil and water hazards assessment). The results of the urban geologic studies indicated that Tabriz city in terms of engineering geological and environmental constraints is at high risk potential and in terms of seismic activity and landslide instability is highly potential. In terms of air, soil and water pollution there are many important environmental concern in this city.

  • Geological and related thematic maps make various economical and social benefits at many sectors. Recently, development of information managing technology such as GIS, Geographic Information System, enlarges the usage of geological map and information. In this research, using the Analytic Hierarchy Process, we analyzed the weight of attributes which compose value of geological map and information. Results of research are as follows. By the analysis of the weight of attributes, we found that the weight of confidence, upper hierarchy attribute, was above 50%. The weight of convenience and additional effect was about $16%{\sim}30%$ in the geological map, geophysical map, geochemical map and hydrogeologic map. And the consumption of each maps will increase, especially in large scale map.

  • A graph or topographic map can often convey larger amounts of information in a shorter time than ordinary text-based methods. To visualize information precisely it is necessary to collect all the geological information at design stage, but actually it is almost impossible to bore or explore the entire area to gather the required data. So, tunnel engineers have to rely on the judgement of expert from the limited number of the results of exploration and experiment. In this study, several programs are developed to handle the results of geological investigation with various data processing techniques. The results of the typical case study are also presented. For the electric survey, eleven points are chosen at the valley to measure the resistivity using Schlumberger array. The measured data are interpolated in 3-dimensional space by kriging and the distribution of resistivity are visualized to find weak or fractured zone. The correlation length appears to be around 5 to 20 meter in depth. Regression analyses were performed to find a correlation length. No nugget effect is assumed, and the topographic map, geologic formation, fault zone, joint geometry and the distribution of resistivity are successfully visualized by using the proposed technique.
