The Cretaceous fossil sites of Seoyuri in Hwasun was designated as the Korean Natural Monument No. 487 in November 2007. It provides important resources for paleoenvironmental studies, including theropod trackways, plant fossils, mudcracks, ripple marks, and horizontal bedding. The Cretaceous sedimentary strata contain a wide variety of volcanic pebbles, 5-40 cm in diameter in the lower portion and are overlain by the Late Cretaceous Hwasun andesite. Whole rock absolute K-Ar age determinations were performed on six volcanic pebbles from the Cretaceous sedimentary strata and on two samples from the overlaying Hwasun andesite. These ages indicate that the rocks belong to the period between the Turonian of the late Cretaceous (91-70 Ma) and the Pliocene age of the early Cenozoic ($63.4{\pm}1.2$ and $62.1{\pm}1.2$ Ma). Thus, the K-Ar ages indicate that the maximum geological age of the dinosaur track-bearing sedimentary deposits is about ca. 70 Ma. Therefore, it suggests that the age is comparable to the formation ages of the dinosaur footprints-bearing deposits in Sado area of Yeosu (71-66Ma).
The K-Ar ages of a sericite quartz schist in the lower Jangsan Formation along the Okdong fault zone reported by Yun (1983) have attracted attention again because of their potential to constrain the depositional timing of the Jangsan Formation. The oldest age of $562{\pm}2Ma$ among three reported K-Ar ages in the schist led to the claim that the depositional period of the lowermost Jangsan Formation in the Joseon Supergroup is late Neoproterozoic. Its depositional age is important for understanding the tectonic evolution of the Korean Peninsula including the formation and evolution histories of its sedimentary basins. Thus, the reliability and geological meaning of three K-Ar ages in the original paper (Yun, 1983) were revisited in the review. Quartz grains in the analyzed sample contain a considerable amount of excess Ar, and therefore it is inappropriate to use the ages as a basis for a depositional age constraint of the Jangsan Formation. The timing of mylonitization in the schist is recalculated as ~170 Ma.

This paper reviews depositional environments, consolidation characteristic of marine deposits along the Nam-Yang river mouth and then analytical solution of self-weight consolidation is made to find consolidated state. This area has been deposited through the short geological age(22year). It's deposition rate is as high as 70cm/year and the height of deposition may be $3{\sim}12m$. It's known that this area is in the under-consolidated state from OCR and analytical solution. It is conclude that the under-consolidated state should be considered in prediction of consolidation settlement.
This study is focused on the geological structure of Igog-Jangam folded zone in the vicinity of Goesan town where Ogcheon group distributes. The geology is composed of Gyemyungsan formation, Daehyangsan quartzite, Munjuri formation and Hwanggangri formation of Ogcheon group unknown age in descending order, and porphyritic biotite granite and dyke rocks that intruded into the Ogcheon group. The study revealed that Igog-Jangam folded zone is a plunged synclinal fold based on the following evidences; 1) Some pebbles in Hwanggangri formation at Minaemi-gol (a name of village) consists of phyllite of Munjuri formation. 2) The pebble bearing phyllitic bed in this area, Hwanggangri formation was recognized as the uppermost member in Ogcheon group instead of the basal one of the group. 3) A crest of anticlinal fold has been appeared near the Goegang bridge as a structural counter-part of that of the present area. 4) The study of lineation of minor fold in Munjuri formation also suggests that Igog-Jangam folded zone manifests to be a synclinal structure.
Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic results are reported for the Ogcheon amphibolites from the central part of the Ogcheon Belt. Rb-Sr and Pb-Pb whole rock isotope data plot greatly scattered in the isochron diagrams due to later alteration or metamorphism, whereas the Sm-Nd whole rock isotope data define a linear array with an age of $1270{\pm}220$ Ma ($1{\sigma}$). Considering several geochemical features of the amphibolites, the 1270 Ma linear array may be not a true but an apparent mixing isochron due to source heterogeneity.
The purpose of this study is to analyze landslide that occurred in Yongin area in 1991 using spatial database. For this, landslide locations are detected from aerial photographs interpretation and field survey. The locations of landslide, topography, soil, forest and geology were constructed to spatial database using Geographic Information System (GIS). To establish occurrence factors of landslide, slope, aspect and curvature of topography were calculated from the topographic database. Texture, material, drainage and effective thickness of soil were extracted from the soil database, and type, age, diameter and density of wood were extracted from the forest database. Lithology was extracted from the geological database, and land use was classified from the TM satellite image. Landslide was analyzed using spatial correlation between the landslide and the landslide occurrence factors by bivariate probability methods. GIS was used to analyze vast data efficiently and statistical programs were used to maintain specialty and accuracy. The result can be used to prevention of hazard, land use planning and construction planning as basic data.
Ore deposits of Dongwon mine are composed of numerous gold and silver veins emplaced in sedimentary rocks of Cambrian Choseon Supergroup and granitoids of Cretaceous age. Ore veins of the mine can be divided into gold and silver veins on the base of vein structure, mineral assemblage and vein trends. Mutual relationships between gold and silver veins are uncertain. Gold veins are simple veins which are composed of base-metal sulfides, and electrum with quartz and ankerite. On the other hand, silver veins are complex veins which reveal three distinct stages of mineral deposition based on vein structure; stage I, deposition of small amounts of oxides and pyrite with quartz; stage II, deposition of base-metal sulfides, small amounts of Ag-bearing minerals, calcite and quartz; stage III, deposition of base metal sulfides, electrum, Ag-sulfosalts, native silver, carbonates and quartz. Homogenization temperature and salinity of fluid inclusion from quartz of gold vein are as follows; $229^{\circ}$ to $283^{\circ}C$, 4.7 to 6.4 wt.% equivalent NaCI. The ore mineralogy suggests that temperature(T) and sulfur fugacity($fs_2$) of the formation of the gold vein and stage III of silver vein are estimated as T ; $294^{\circ}$ to $318^{\circ}C$, $fs_2\;10^{-9.4}$ to $10^{-10.1}$ atm. and T; $240^{\circ}$ to $279^{\circ}C$, $fs_2;10^{-11.1}$ to $10^{-17.3}$ atm. respectively. Pressure condition during gold vein formation estimated from data of ore mineralogy and fluid inclusion range 500 to 750 bar.
The industrial minerals play an important role in mining sector. More than 70 % of total mineral production come from industrial mineral sector. This paper reviews geological occurrence of kaolin, pyrophyllite and limestone, and current demand-supply status of major industrial minerals in the Republic of Korea. The kaolin is mainly distributed in the Kyeongsang province, formed by deep weathering of Precambrian anorthosite on mountainside of gentle slope. The pyrophyllite mainly occurs in the Kyeongsang and Chulla provinces, formed by hydrothermal alteration of late Cretaceous andesitic and rhyolitic rocks. Pyrophyllite comprises massive and lenticular bodies and contains minor amounts of kaolin, alunite and pyrite, in some places andalusite and illite. The limestone(Great Limestone Series of Cambrian age) is distributed widely in the Kwangwon and Chungcheong provinces. The limestone bodies are approzimately 70 km long and 3 km wide, elongated NE-ward, and show high grade of CaO content. In 1992, the self-sufficiency ratio of 44 nonfuel (metallic and non-metallic) minerals was no more than 30 percent. However, the ratio of 27 industrial minerals (non-metallic) represents high value of about 72 percent. The export/productjon ratio of the industrial minerals shows decreasing patterns from 12.2 % in 1983 to 4.2 % in 1992. Also the import/production ratio shows rapidly decreasing pattern from 84 % in 1983 to 38.2 % in 1992.
Based on the petrologic and age data of the Cretaceous to early Tertiary granites in south Korea, we propose a new tectonic model reflecting their temporal and spatial variations. A number of petrographic and geochemical studies on the granites suggest that they originated from the magma formed by subduction of oceanic crust in continental margin and were emplaced in epizone. The MMEs with various shapes and sizes, which were produced due to the magma mixing caused by the injection of mafic magma from mantle during the crystallization of the granitic magma, are observed in the granites. The distributions of the MMEs and ages of the granites show a distinctive spatio-temporal distribution pattern. The distribution pattern can be explained by a multiple slab window model related to the ridge subduction of Izanagi-Pacific plates during the Late Cretaceous.
Groundwaters were sampled from 730 wells being used for drinking purposes during 2007-2009. These samples were analysed using a gas-flow type GPC (Gas Proportional Counter) according to the USEPA method (900.0). We obtained a gross-alpha counting TDS (total dissolved solid) efficiency curve (Y = 0.0017X2 - 0.3122X + 19.165, X = TDS, Y = efficiency, $R^2$ = 0.9734) using natural uranium standard to get gross ${\alpha}$ value of the samples. The gross alpha values ranged from MDA (minimum detectable activity) to 14.88 pCi/L and 429 samples showed values higher than MDA (< 0.9 pCi/L). Correlations of the uranium values with the total alpha values and the gross-alpha values indicate that uranium values have high impacts on gross-alpha values. Groundwater samples of study areas were classified into four regions according to the rock types; plutonic (granite) rock region (427 areas), metamorphic rock region (181 aeras), sedimentary rock region (70 areas), volcanic rock region (52 areas). Groundwater of Cretaceous granite presented the highest gross-alpha value. Gross alpha in groundwaters showed no relationship with uranium in terms of the geological ages, rocks and minerals.
