  • This study searched for comparison with geography of Qing China, origin of geographical name, people's feature and costume, description on regional geography, and perception on locality on view of a geographer, Ji-Won Park, a renowned Korean scholar of practical learning on the late 18th century. This study on the first three chapters of his Yorha Ilgi - "Crossing the Amnok(Yalu) River("渡河錄")," "Several Records on Senyang("監京雜識")," and "Writing Essays, Riding Horses("馹迅隨筆")," focusing on landscape of Qing China, inquiry on geographical name, feature and costume, and descriptions on locality, gives a glimpse on Park's geographical view on geography of Qing China. His writing style to compare landscapes between Korea and Qing China, full of his love for Korean landscape, is very delicate and clear, Although he sentimentalized when he passed through Bonghwang-castle(鳳凰城) in China, his subtle and beautiful writing explains that land and mountains in Han-yang(Seoul) are much more wonderful than those in China. His vivid depiction of landscape and weather on his way in Qing China is remarkable and explanation on geographical names like Parhae(渤海), Yoha(遼河), Taejaha(太子河), Senyang(瀋陽) etc. is enough to stimulate readers' curiosity on geography.

  • This study aims to provide research fields and topics to complement, extend and develop the geographical toponymy in Korea, largely based on a summary of topics discussed in the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN). The Korean toponymic research has generally focused on revealing human, social and physical characteristics of the region by investigating the creation and change of the geographical names, with the perspective of creator and owner of the toponyms. Toponymic researches in the UNGEGN, in comparison, have put forward with the mission of standardization of geographical names and with specific emphasis on the users of toponyms. The topics include diverse forms of toponyms by user groups, roles of language groups, preservation of toponyms with specific value, etc. As research directions for an establishment of extended geographical toponymy accommodating discussions in the UNGEGN, further research topics are suggested; use of exonyms and endonyms in the Korean language, the nature of geographical feature and perception over it, writing systems for inter-language communication, and geographical names as intagible cultural heritage.

Porter proposed the concept of industrial cluster, a lot of academic papers and industry surveys have suggested that industrial cluster is the key factor to competitive edge and long-term economic growth. Industrial cluster is often defined as geographical concentrations of interconnected entities in a particular industrial field. The purpose of this paper is for comparing and analysing the institutes supporting the industrial clusters and the companies in great-sphere level including various local governments. As the result of this research, four types of the cooperative industrial supporting systems among various local governments are divided: 1. inducing foreign direct investment into domestic area by regional development agency, 2. co-developing research parks or industrial parks by some local governments, 3. taking regional industrial statistics and writing development strategies over the boundary of the local governments, 4. constructing internet portal sites networking the local companies, universities, research centers of the same industrial cluster.

  • This study sets out to assess achievement of two series of publication titled "the Geography of Korea", which established itself as the most representative publication on Korea's geography. For assessment, this study selected Delphi method to survey Korean geographical professionals on the publication by requesting respondents to rate the adequacy of its: publishing system, production team organization, array of topics, target reader, classification of regions, and use of visual materials. The results showed the respondents highly appreciated the significance of the publications and generally agreed that the past publications had adequate level of: publication frequency, time allowed for writing, number of pages, selection criteria of authors, range of topics, region classification schemes. On the other hand, dissatisfaction from the respondents came from the lack of chief supervisor over each section or the whole publication. The geographers also stressed the need to enhance the publication's accessibility to the wider public by adopting easier writings and also requested diversification of visual aid design. This study also examined the difference between respondent groups by occupations and by past involvement in the publication. The result of this study can serve as a foundation to identify the desirable direction of future publications on "the Geography of Korea".

  • In terms of the importance of ocean as a present and future resource and the Korean peninsular location, it is strongly urged to develop renewed recognition and educational programs on ocean, so as to respond properly to the newly emerging political changes surrounding the country. By setting up the purpose of marine education as engendering greater interests in and knowledge of ocean, this research suggests that the frame of marine education can be founded appropriately on four educational sub-categories: humanity education, territory education, economy education, and resources and environment education. At an operational scale, this paper particularly analyzed ocean- related contents in the 7th national curriculum in order to find substantial ways for strengthening marine education. The study simultaneously compared the result of content analysis with the curriculum of marine education in other countries, and founded that explicit ocean-related contents in the 7th curriculum were significantly limited. Yet, the study alternatively points out that it is possible to use a variety of teaching materials and apply them for writing textbooks or developing teaching-teaming curriculum. I provide some of the ways for strengthening marine education by using marine-related themes in the curriculum of geography education. Marine is not simply one of the key elements in the discipline of geography. But, more importantly, I suggest that geography is particularly useful in developing various and familiar themes such as swimming beach, fishing villages, ports, marine-bound industrial district and port cities into teaching materials.
