  • There is a growing demand on remotely sensed and GIS data services in modern society. However, conventional WEB applications based on client/server pattern can not meet the criteria in the future . Grid computing provides a promising resolution for establishing spatial information system toward future applications. Here, a new architecture of the distributed environment for remotely sensed data processing based on the middleware technology was proposed. In addition, in order to utilize the new environment, a problem had to be algorithmically expressed as comprising a set of concurrently executing sub-problems or tasks. Experiment of the algorithm was implemented, and the results show that the new environmental can achieve high speedups for applications compared with conventional implementation.

  • We studied on a technic to improve and implement the virtual environment grid information in the war-game model. The virtual environment data are categorized into ground, sea, and air, and separatedly managed and operated. The data are implemented and managed in the geographical information and topography type information. The geographical information, including grid location coordinate and sea level, are managed in computer files as a grid type. We improved the representation of the sea level by mapping the sea level value of the grid information file into GCV and suggested the dynamic virtual environment implementation technic for the region with the large range of tide. In the experiments, we could know that it is possible to adopt the dynamic virtual environment to the war-game model.

  • The Grid Reference System, which was firstly used in SPOT series, has been successfully adapted in KOMPSAT-1 and KOMPSAT-2 program, which identifies the geographical location to make image collection plans and manage the database of satellite images. Each Grid Reference System for KOMPSAT-1 and KOMPSAT-2 was designed based on system parameters related to each KOMPSAT-1 and KOMPSAT-2 and this fact leads to the need for the design of the Grid Reference System for KOMPSAT-3 (KGRS-3, hereafter), which reflects system parameters for KOMPSAT-3. The (K, J) coordinate system has been defined as the Grid Reference System for KOMPSAT-3 using heritages from KOMPSAT-1 and KOMPSAT-2 programs. The numbering of K begins with the prime meridian of K = 1 with running eastward on earth increasingly, and the numbering of J uses a value of J = 1000 at all points on the equator and begin with running northward increasingly. The Grid Reference System for KOMPSAT-3 is to be implemented in Ground Segment of KOMPSAT-3 system.

  • In resent years, Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) is being actively developed. Typically, OWF has a better wind resource than onshore one, but also have a very high investment cost and maintenance cost. Furthermore, due to a difficulty of geographical access, OWF can be affected by the failure for a longer time. As the result, OWF has a higher loss cost. Therefore, a reliability evaluation should be performed more carefully at OWF planning stage. In this paper, a methodology for the reliability evaluation on inner grid is suggested. Inner grid connects wind turbines via submarine cables and transfers power to offshore substation. According to location of the faulted cable under layouts of inner grid, the transfer ability of inner grid is influenced. In order to indicate the transfer ability of inner grid, several indices are introduced such as PNDR, EEND and EENDC. To demonstrate the methodology described in this paper, diversity case studies were performed.

  • Change detection technology, which discovers the change information on the surface of the earth by comparing and analyzing multi-temporal satellite images, can be usefully applied to the various fields, such as environmental inspection, urban planning, forest policy, updating of geographical information and the military usage. In this paper, we introduce a change detection system that can extract and analyze change elements from high-resolution satellite imagery as well as low- or middle-resolution satellite imagery. The developed system provides not only 7 pixelbased methods that can be used to detect change from low- or middle-resolution satellite images but also a float window concept that can be used in manual change detection from highresolution satellite images. This system enables fast access to the very large image, because it is constituted by OGC grid coverage components. Also new change detection algorithms can be easily added into this system if once they are made into grid coverage components.

  • Location Service is required in position-based routing for VANET to provide position information. We propose Grid-based Location service spot(GLSS) scheme for optimized routing path to improve accessibility and load balance in location service. Specific area is defined as Location service spot(LSS) on each grid in this scheme, and all nodes in the grid geocast its location update message and location request message to each LSS. Location request messages are flooded throughout LSSs, location reply messages establish optimized route from the source grid to the destination grid. We evaluated GLSS which establishes optimized route on the grid comparing GPSR in consideration of road condition and geographical features.

  • It is important for urban planners and policy makers to understand complex, diverse urban demands and social structure, but this is not easy due to lack of data that represents the dynamics of residents at micro-geographical level. This paper explores how to create population data at at a micro-level by allocating population data to building. It attempted to allocate population data stored in a grid layer (100 meters by 100 meters) into a building footprint layer that represents the appearance of physical buildings. For the allocation, this paper describes a systemic approach that classifies grid cells into five prototypical patterns based on the composition of residential building types in a grid cell. This approach enhances allocation accuracy by accommodating heterogeneity of urban space rather than relying on the assumption of uniform spatial homogeneity of populations within an aerial unit. Unlike the methods that disaggregate population data to the parcel, this approach is more applicable to Asian cities where large multifamily residential parcels are common. However, it should be noted that this paper does not demonstrate the validity of the allocated population since there is a lack of the actual data available to be compared with the current estimated population. In the case of water and electricity, the data is already attached to an individual address, and hence, it can be considered to the purpose of the validation for the allocation. By doing so, it will be possible to identify innovative methods that create a population distribution dataset representing the comprehensive and dynamic nature of the population at the micro geographical level.

  • To analyze hydrologic processes in a watershed requires both various geographical data and hydrological time series data. Recently, not only geographical data such as DEM(Digital Elevation Model) and hydrologic thematic map but also hydrological time series from numerical weather prediction and rainfall radar have been provided as grid data, and there are studies on hydrologic analysis using these grid data. In this study, GRM(Grid based Rainfall-runoff Model) which is physically-based distributed rainfall-runoff model has been developed to simulate short term rainfall-runoff process effectively using these grid data. Kinematic wave equation is used to simulate overland flow and channel flow, and Green-Ampt model is used to simulate infiltration process. Governing equation is discretized by finite volume method. TDMA(TriDiagonal Matrix Algorithm) is applied to solve systems of linear equations, and Newton-Raphson iteration method is applied to solve non-linear term. Developed model was applied to simplified hypothetical watersheds to examine model reasonability with the results from $Vflo^{TM}$. It was applied to Wicheon watershed for verification, and the applicability to real site was examined, and simulation results showed good agreement with measured hydrographs.

  • Population is important as a fundamental element of local industry and economy, and census data is essential to regional planning and policy making. Although there have been many researches on population and regional planning, there are few studies on population considering spatial unit. In this study, the population of three spatial scales were compared in order to establish the spatial unit suitable for the rural planning. The study area is Gangwon, Chungcheong-Nam, Chungcheong-Buk, Jeolla-Nam, Jeolla-Buk, Gyeonsang-Nam, Gyeonsang-Buk and Jeju province. Population were compared using statistical data analysis, GIS visualization, and spatial statistics. The mean, maximum, minimum, and variance of population were calculated and the coefficient of variation according to spatial unit was compared. The mean, maximum, minimum, and variance of population were calculated and the coefficient of variation according to spatial unit was compared. As the results, the census output area unit is difficult to interpret spatial analysis results. Administrative district unit has the limit that includes areas where the population does not live. The grid unit is well suited to the geographical characteristics but has many disadvantages of the grid with small population. Therefore, It is necessary to complement the limits of the Eup and Myeon-dong administrative district through the grid unit data.
