  • In general, a crustal geomagnetic (or gravity) anomaly compiled at one altitude can be estimated at a different altitude by continuation using the Fourier transform (FT). However, in case of continuation with a great distance between the two elevations, or, in particular, in case of downward continuation, the estimated anomalies by the FT are likely to be mathematically unstable so that the estimated values are not realistic. To solve this problem, two independently measured magnetic field anomalies at different altitudes, such as aeromagnetic and satellite magnetic observations, are implemented to estimate values at in-between altitude for better understanding and interpreting geophysical and geological features. This ‘'dual continuation’' technique is straightforward in the FT and gives a more realistic estimate in all altitudes when we simulated with a set of prismatic bodies at different altitudes. This implies that we add up another constraint like satellite-based observations on the geopotential field modeling for the non-unique geological and geophysical problems to a conventional Fourier-type continuation technique with a single set of observations.

  • Rock property of the Seosan Maaesamjonbulsang is composed of biotite granite with medium grained texture. The triad Buddha is highly deteriorated by the joint, fracture, break-out, exfoliation, dew condensation of the surface and discoloration of the secondary pollutant. Host rock of the triad Buddha is divided dozens of rock blocks with various shape, and developed irregular discontinuity planes. Besides, the host rock is promoted biological pollution due to the surrounding crowded vegetation and high humidity environment. As the results of structural stability, it is confirmed that developed discontinuity system in the host rock is exposed instability sloping environment. Therefore, the host rock and surroundings are required maintenance, and required preservation by continuance monitoring for understand behavior of discontinuity system.

  • The accuracy of the automatic NMO velocity analysis, which is used for an effective and objective NMO velocity analysis, is highly affected by the velocity resolution of the velocity spectrum. In this study, we have developed an automatic NMO velocity algorithm, where the velocity spectra are created using high-resolution bootstrapped differential semblance (BDS), and the velocity analysis on CMP gathers is performed in parallel with MPI. We also compared the velocity models from the developed automatic NMO velocity algorithm with high-resolution BDS to those from BDS. To verify the developed automatic velocity analysis module we created synthetic seismic data from a velocity model including horizon layers. We confirmed that the developed automatic velocity analysis module estimated velocity more accurately. In addition, NMO velocity which yielded a CMP stacked section, where the coherency of the events were improved, was estimated when the developed module was applied to a marine field data set.

  • Ultramafic rocks in the Yesan talc ore deposits area are unknown age plutonic rocks which intruded PreCambrian Yoogoo gneiss, and were intruded by Jurassic biotite granite, and Cretaceous acidic and mafic dykes. The ultramafic rocks consist mainly of serpentinite with some amphibolite and talc ore body. The serpentinites are divided 5 rock types (S1${\sim}$S5) on the basis of the developed degree of serpentine phenocrysts and layerings. It seems that the original rocks of the serpentinites were co-magmatic peridotites (dunite and pyroxene peridotite). Main serpentinization from the original rocks was occurred during amphibolite facies regional metamorphism in Choongnam area which Yoogoo gneiss was affected. Main steatitization from the serpentinites was hydrothermal alteration by ascended hydrothermal fluid through crush zones.

  • Visual MODFLOW, a three dimensional groundwater flow model, was used to analyze effects of a weir construction in an alluvial stream on the nearby groundwater flow system. A hypothetical conceptual model was developed to investigate how the groundwater level and the water budget could change after a weir construction depending on the location of tributary streams. A site example, dealing with the Juksan weir installed in the Yeongsan River, was also demonstrated to predict the effects of the weir construction. Model results show that impacts of a weir construction on the groundwater flow system greatly vary depending on how far a tributary is located and whether it is located downstream or upstream from the weir. Therefore, consideration of the location of tributaries in planning the location of a weir could effectively minimize the impacts of a weir construction on the groundwater flow system. It is also demonstrated that model results are highly dependent upon how the model is dealing with small tributaries and agricultural drainage channels, which can be easily found nearby the main streams, acting as major water bodies for groundwater discharge. The model for the Juksan area shows that the weir construction will change the direction of groundwater flow in some areas, leading to changes of groundwater quality and interaction of the Yeongsan River to the aquifer from a gaining to a losing stream. The model also predicted the areas where rise of groundwater level caused by the Juksan weir could adversely affect plant growth, and thereby suggested installing new drainage channels as a countermeasure to drawdown the groundwater level.

  • Serpentinites in Chungnam area are mainly composed of serpentines. Serpentines of olivine origin consist of pseudomorphs of olivines and show mesh textureen closed with magnetites along the boundaries of serpentine crystals. In some serpentinites, serpentinization is occurred in crystal boundaries and/or cracks of olivines and pyroxenes which are relict minerals of dunite and harzburgite. On the process from olivine to serpentine, Mg ions are greatly decreased and Si ions are greatly increased, and $Fe^{2+}\;and\;Fe^{3+}$ ions are a little decreased. But, on the process from pyroxene to serpentine, Si ions are greatly decreased and Mg ions are greatly increased. Magnetites around the serpentine crystals were formed from the iron which had been left out through this serpentinization process of olivine. Serpentinization from the original rocks such as dunite and harzburgite in Chungnam area was occurred by various waters affected after formation of original rock, and particularly by metamorphic water in the metamorphic conditions ranging from green schist facies to granulite facies through amphibolite facies.

  • The phenomena of detachment and movement of One particles are one of the important mechanisms both in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. In geoenvironmental engineering, in particular, movement of fine particles may facilitate the transport of contaminants since the particle surfaces absorb contaminants before movement. Weathered granitic residual soils, which are the most abundant in Korea. contain large quantities of fine particles up to 50%. The characteristics of fine particle movement of weathered granitic residual soils are investigated in this paper. Samples are obtained from Poiiong, Shinnaedong in Seoul and Andong in Kyungpook : each of the samples represents typical residual soil types in Korea. Laboratory experiments for the three adopted soil types are performed. It is found that effluent concentration of the samples is influenced by porosity, fine particle percentage and particle size distribution. The critical velocity decreases as the fine particle percentage increases and the rate of change of erosion rate increases as the porosity increases. And well-graded samples showed less effluent concentrations compared to poorly-graded samples. The governing equation on the physical mechanism of fine particle movement and its nomerical solution scheme are suggested on the basis of the test results.

  • For the Hancheon drainage area in Jeju island, a groundwater flow model using Visual MODFLOW was developed to simulate artificial recharge through injection wells installed in the Hancheon reservoir. The model was used to analyze changes of the groundwater level and the water budget due to the artificial recharge. The model assumed that $2{\times}10^6m^3$ of storm water would recharge annually through the injection wells during the rainy season. The transient simulation results showed that the water level rose by 39.6 m at the nearest monitoring well and by 0.26 m at the well located 7 km downstream from the injection wells demonstrating a large extent of the affected area by the artificial recharge. It also shown that, at the time when the recharge ended in the 5th year, the water level increased by 81 m at the artificial reservoir and the radius of influence was about 2.1 km downstream toward the coast. The residence time of recharged groundwater was estimated to be no less than 5 years. The model also illustrated that 15 years of artificial recharge could increase the average linear velocity of groundwater up to 1540 m/yr, which showed 100 m/yr higher than before. Increase of groundwater storage due to artificial recharge was calculated to be $2.4{\times}10^6$ and $4.3{\times}10^6m^3$ at the end of the 5th and 10th years of artificial recharge, respectively. The rate of storage increase was gradually diminished afterwards, and storage increase of $5.0{\times}10^6m^3$ was retained after 15 years of artificial recharge. Conclusively, the artificial recharge system could augment $5.0{\times}10^6m^3$ of additional groundwater resources in the Hancheon area.

  • Numerical models simulating groundwater flow are often used to estimate groundwater discharge into a tunnel. In designing numerical models, the grid size should be carefully considered to ensure that groundwater discharge is accurately predicted. However, several recent studies have employed various grid sizes without providing an adequate explanation for their choice. This paper suggests the optimal grid size based on a comparison of numerical models with analytical solutions. Discrepancies between numerical and analytical solutions result from the effect of model boundaries as well as the grid size. By nullifying boundary effects, the errors solely associated with the grid size could be analyzed. The optimal grid size yielding accurate numerical solutions was thus derived. The suggested relationship between tunnel radius and optimal grid size is analogous to the relationship between the equivalent well block radius and grid size.
