Operation of the Radio Occultation Mission in KOMPSAT-5

  • Korea multi-purpose satellite-5 (KOMPSAT-5) is a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite scheduled to be launched in 2010. To satisfy the precision orbit determination (POD) requirement for a high resolution synthetic aperture radar image of KOMPSAT-5, KOMPSAT-5 has atmosphere occultation POD (AOPOD) system which consists of a space-borne dual frequency global positioning system (GPS) receiver and a laser retro reflector array. A space-borne dual frequency GPS receiver on a LEO satellite provides position data for the POD and radio occultation data for scientific applications. This paper describes an overview of AOPOD system and operation concepts of the radio occultation mission in KOMPSAT-5. We showed AOPOD system satisfies the requirements of KOMPSAT-5 in performance and stability.

A Study on Astro-Geodetic Geoid in Korea (우리나라 천문지오이드에 관한 연구)

  • In the three dimensional Cartesian Coordinate System such as the satellite geodesy the relationship of the geoid and the reference ellipsoid must be known. Therefore, the determination of geoidal heights is regarded as one of the most important problem in geodesy. This paper deals with determination of astro-geodetic geoid by the spherical surface polynomials interpolation method. The data that astronomical deflection of the vertical was published by National Geography Institute is applied. The map of geoidal heights is drawn out. This shows that Tokyo Datum have influenced on Korea.

Effect of confined concrete on compressive strength of RC beams

  • The results of experimental testing of the effect of confined concrete on compressive strength and ductility of concrete beam subjected to pure bending are presented. The effect of different stirrups forms and spacing, as well as different concrete strengths, on beam carrying capacity and ductility were analyzed. Ultimate strength capacity and deflection of concrete beam increase with the decrease in stirrups spacing. Stirrup form has a great effect on the ultimate carrying capacity and ductility of concrete beam. Stirrups which confined the region of concrete in the compression more contribute to greater compression strength of concrete than common stirrups at the perimeter of the entire cross-section of the beam.
