  • Korea Astronomy and Space science Institute (KASI) partnered with the Australian National University (ANU) to develop the adaptive optics (AO) system at the Geochang observatory with a 100 cm optical telescope for multiple applications, including space geodesy, space situational awareness and Korean space missions. The AO system is designed to get high resolution images of space objects with lower magnitude than 10 by using themselves as a natural guide star, and achieve a Strehl ratio larger than 20% in the environment of good seeing with a fried parameter of 12-15 cm. It will provide the imaging of space objects up to 1,000 km as well as its information including size, shape and orientation to improve its orbit prediction precision for collision avoidance between active satellites and space debris. In this paper, we address not only the design of AO system, but also analyze the images of stellar objects. It is also demonstrated that the AO System is achievable to a near diffraction limited full width at half maximum (FWHM) by analyzing stellar images.

  • This study surveyed the selling, buying, usage, selection and spraying frequency of pesticides on apple orchards in Geochang, Gyeongsangnam-do province from 2012 to 2013 and found that the fungicides, insecticides and acaricides were sprayed $13.9{\pm}3.5$, $12.6{\pm}3.2$, and $2.6{\pm}1.3$ times per year, respectively. Fungicides were applied mainly to control for Diplocarpon mali, Colletotrichum gloeosporoides and Alternaria mali, whereas insecticides were sprayed mostly to control Grapholita molesta, Carposina sasakii insects. Dealers sold pesticides without monitoring of the pests in the apple orchards, and also sometimes sold pesticides which are non-registered for apple. Most of the farmers were highly relied on dealers' recommendations to choosing the brand product. Relating on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) on apple orchards in Geochang, residual active ingredient of frequently sprayed fungicides, insecticides, and acaricides were analyzed. Most applications of the fungicides, insecticides and acaricides were well corresponded with FAO's recommendations. For production of safe food and use of pesticides, it is requested to develope control calender and consideration of training program for farmers. The regional characteristics and environmental situation of the farm also should be considered.

  • Mupung granite, which is located adjacent to Gimcheon granites to the north and Geochang granites to the south, has been known to consist of biotite-hornblende granite (Gbh), porphyritic granite (Gp), and hornblende-biotite granite (Ghb). In this study, we subdivided the Gbh of Mupung granite into biotite granite (Gb) and biotite hornblende granite (Gbh), based on petrological observations. The grayish Gb with medium to coarse grain and porphyritic texture contains a small amount of muscovite, but the hornblende and mafic microgranular enclave (MME) is not observed in Gb. On the other hand, MME can be commonly found in pinkish Gbh. The mafic minerals in Gbh are mostly hornblende and biotite. In the Gb in Mupung granites, the hornblende and sphene (which is the characteristic minerals in Gimcheon granite) are not observed. In addition, the trend of the changes in major elements of Gb in Mupung granites is similar to that of Geochang granites. These petrological characteristics suggest that the Gb in Mupung granite has a similarity with Geochang granite (than Gimchen granite). We also observed that the texture and composition of minerals of Gbh, as well as those of surrounding Gp and Ghb, are consistent with the characteristics of Cretaceous granites in Gyeongsang basin, rather than those of Jurassic granites in Yeongnam massif.

  • This paper attempts to locate and define a quartzite deposit in Geochang, Kyongsangnam Province in order to establish its commercial viability. The quartzite deposit (Poongwon Mine) occurs as lens or boudinage at the contact between mica schist of the Deogyusan formation and granite gneiss. During Precambrian, regional metamorphism and granitization may have caused the formation ot quartzite layers through recrystallization and rearrangement of silica components derived from older sedimentary rocks, probably chert and/or sandstone. The deposit is composed of fine-grained milky, or light yellowish quartz showing weak laminations with fairly dense and rough appearance in outcrop. It reaches about $60\;m(height)\times140\;m(length)\times35m(width)$ with attitude of $N57^{\circ}E-N8^{\circ}4E\;and\;51^{\circ}-60^{\circ}NW$. The average grade of the quartzite samples is $SiO_2=94.4\;wt\%,\;A1_2O_3=3.3\;wt\%,\; Fe_2O_3=0.8\;wt\%,\;K_2O=0.7\;wt\%$, which can be used for foundry, constructional materials, or concrete making. The proved reserve was estimated as 200,811 tonnage.

  • This study was investigated about the antibacterial effects of aqueous garlic extract (AGE) against Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7), Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of AGE against E. coli O157:H7, S. typhimurium, and S. aureus was 24, 48 and 24 mg/mL, respectively. In addition, the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of AGE against E. coli O157:H7, S. typhimurium, and S. aureus was all of 96 mg/mL. The growth of E. coli O157:H7 was significantly inhibited at the concentration of AGE 24 mg/mL at 24 hr post-incubation (p < 0.01), but that of S. aureus was not significantly inhibited at the same concentration. However, the growth of S. aureus at the concentration of AGE 96 mg/mL was significantly inhibited at 24 hr post-incubation compared to that of untreated bacteria (p < 0.01). At the concentration of AGE 48 (p < 0.05) and 96 mg/mL (p < 0.001), the growth of S. typhimurim was significantly inhibited at 24 hr after incubation compared to that of untreated bacteria. With the results of this study, AGE can be used as alternative to antibiotics and chemical food preservatives.

  • Jeonjangri site of Geochang area is located in the Geochang Basin, and lies on the river terrace of upstream part of Hwang River. Fluvial deposits are well distributed at the northern and southern walls of trench 2(district 2) in the Jeonjangri archeological site. This study aims to interpret the occurrences of fluvial sedimentary deposits on the basis of grain size analysis and palynological analysis in the representative sections of Jeongjangri site. The sedimentary profile shows that the upper units are typified by paleosols with soil wedge formed at about $25,000{\sim}30,000yr$ B.P, and the lower units are characterized by reddish brown muddy sands, organic muds and sand/gravel downwards in the profile. Particularly palynological study on the organic muds of southern wall section showed a result that lower unit is dominant with grass vegetation, and upper unit with Alnus-Quercus-Pinus vegetation. The former is interpreted to be formed at $60,000{\sim}50,000yr$ B.P (stadial), while the latter at $80,000{\sim}70,000yr$ B.P. In general broad-leaved/coniferous mixed forests are mostly dominant in Jeongjangri site and the climate was presumed to be cool temperate at that time.

  • In recents years, the statistical properties has become an important quantity for reliability based design of a component. The effects of the materials and test conditions for parameter estimation in residual strength degradation model are studied in carbon/epoxy laminate. It is shown that the correlation between the experimental results and the theoretical prediction on the fatigue life distribution using the life distribution convergence method is very reasonable.
