  • In this paper, we proposed a modofied genetic algorithm to minimize misclassification rate for determining the codebook. Genetic algorithms are adaptive methods which may be used solve search and optimization problems based on the genetic processes of biological organisms. But they generally require a large amount of computation efforts. GAVQ can choose the optimal individuals by genetic operators. The position of individuals are optimized to improve the recognition rate. The technical properties of this study is that prevents us from the local minimum problem, which is not avoidable by conventional VQ algorithms. We compared the simulation result with Matlab using phoneme data. The simulation results show that the recognition rate from GAVQ is improved by comparing the conventional VQ algorithms.

  • This study proposes a new optimization algorithm which is combined with genetic algorithm and ANOM. This improved genetic algorithm is not only faster than the simple genetic algorithm, but also gives a more accurate solution. The optimizing ability and convergence rate of a new optimization algorithm is identified by using a evaluation function which have several local optimum and an optimum design of rocker arm shaft. The calculation results are compared with the simple genetic algorithm.

  • The present paper deals with a multiobjective optimization method based on the co-evolutionary genetic strategy. The co-evolutionary strategy carries out the multiobjective optimization in such way that it optimizes individual objective function as compared with each generation's value while there are more than two genetic evolutions at the same time. In this study, the designs that are out of the given constraint map compared with other objective function value are excepted by the penalty. The proposed multiobjective genetic algorithms are distinguished from other optimization methods because it seeks for the optimized value through the simultaneous search without the help of the single-objective values which have to be obtained in advance of the multiobjective designs. The proposed strategy easily applied to well-developed genetic algorithms since it doesn't need any further formulation for the multiobjective optimization. The paper describes the co-evolutionary strategy and compares design results on the simple structural optimization problem.

  • Adult periodontitis (AP) is a chronic inflammatory disease whose etiology is not well defined. Some studies suggested that the clinical characteristics of this disease may be in part explained by genetic factors, and some attempts to find genetic markers for this disease were successful. The interleukin-1 (IL-1) gene family as one of genetic factors may influence the expression of adult periodontitis. The aim of present study is to investigate the frequencies of genetic polymorphisms in the IL-1 gene family encoding three genes (IL-1A, IL-1B and IL-1RN) in Korean AP patients and periodontically healthy controls. There were no significant differences in genotype and allele frequencies of these polymorph isms between two groups, respectively. However, -511 polymorphism of IL-1 B gene was significantly associated with mean pocket depth (MPD, mm) value in AP patients (P<0.05). Therefore, our results suggest that -511 polymorphism in the IL-1B gene may be useful as a genetic marker for the severity of AP in Koreans.

  • In this thesis presents line balancing problems of two-sided and mixed model assembly line widely used in practical fields using genetic algorithm for reducing throughput time, cost of tools and fixtures and improving flexibility of assembly lines. Two-sided and mixed model assembly line is a special type of production line where variety of product similar in product characteristics are assembled in both sides. This thesis proposes the genetic algorithm adequate to each step in tow-sided and mixed model assembly line with suitable presentation, individual, evaluation function, selection and genetic parameter. To confirm proposed genetic algorithm, we apply to increase the number of tasks in case study. And for evaluation the performance of proposed genetic algorithm, we compare to existing algorithm of one-sided and mixed model assembly line. The results show that the algorithm is outstanding in the problems with a larger number of stations or larger number of tasks.

  • One of the major limitations in using adenoviral vector for gene therapy is inefficient infection of host cells. The presence of coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) and ${\alpha}$-integrin on cell surfaces is required for efficient adenovirus infection. In this study, we investigated the effect of trichostatin A, a histone deacetylase inhibitor, on transfection efficiency after transduction of adenovirus mediated p16$\^$INK4a/ gene transfer. In our previous study, p16$\^$INK4a/ tumor suppressor gene transfer in the non-small cell lung cancer cells (A549 cells) by transduction of recombinant adenovirus (Ad5CMV-p16) resulted in significant inhibition of cancer cell proliferation. • Most carcass and meat quality traits are moderate to highly heritable, indicating that they can be improved through selection. Genetic evaluation for these types of traits is performed using performance data obtained from commercial and progeny testing evaluation. The performance data from commercial farms are available in large volume, however, some drawbacks have been observed. The drawback of the commercial data is mainly due to sorting of animals based on live weight prior to slaughter, and this could lead to bias in the genetic evaluation of later measured traits such as carcass traits. The current study has two components to address the drawback of the commercial data. The first component of the study aimed to estimate genetic parameters for carcass and meat quality traits in Korean Hanwoo cattle using a large sample size of industry-based carcass performance records (n = 469,002). The second component of the study aimed to describe the impact of sorting animals into different contemporary groups based on an early measured trait and then examine the effect on the genetic evaluation of subsequently measured traits. To demonstrate our objectives, we used real performance data to estimate genetic parameters and simulated data was used to assess the bias in genetic evaluation. The results of our first study showed that commercial data obtained from slaughterhouses is a potential source of carcass performance data and useful for genetic evaluation of carcass traits to improve beef cattle performance. However, we observed some harvesting effect which leads to bias in genetic evaluation of carcass traits. This is mainly due to the selection of animal based on their body weight before arrival to slaughterhouse. Overall, the non-random allocation of animals into a contemporary group leads to a biased estimated breeding value in genetic evaluation, the severity of which increases when the evaluation traits are highly correlated.

  • Genetic variability is an important component in the ability of populations to adapt in the face of environmental change. Severe human impacts reduced Muzzafarnagri sheep of India from 500,000 in 1972 to 10,989 in 1973-74. Here we report for the first time the effect of this population decline on levels of genetic variability at 13 FAO recommended ovine microsatellite loci and contrast levels of variability to that in a breed from the same geographical region, which differed in numbers, by an order of magnitude (Marwari sheep). Of the 13 loci, 100% were polymorphic in both breeds. A high degree of genetic variation was observed within populations in terms of both allele diversity (number of alleles per locus, >4) and gene diversity (expected heterozygosity, >0.5), which implied that there is still a substantial amount of genetic diversity at the nuclear loci in a declining population. Nevertheless, overall low number of alleles per locus and relatively less abundance of low frequency alleles in Muzzafarnagri sheep suggested that genetic variability has been comparatively reduced in this population. Bottleneck analysis indicated that a genetic bottleneck did not occur during the most recent decline. In addition, we found that the differentiation among populations was moderate ($F_{ST}$= 11.8%). This study on assessment of genetic effects of the population declines in ovines is a step towards identification of genetically impoverished or healthy populations, which could prove to be a useful tool to facilitate conservation planning in this important species of small ruminants.

  • In order to develop specific genetic markers and determine the genetic diversity of Bangladeshi native cattle (Pabna, Red Chittagong) and exotic breeds (Sahiwal), randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was performed using 12 primers. Genomic DNA was extracted from 20 cattle (local and exotic) blood samples and extracted DNA was observed by gel electrophoresis. Among the random primers three were matched and found to be polymorphic. Genetic relations between cattle's were determined by RAPD polymorphisms from a total of 66.67%. Statistical analysis of the data, estimating the genetic distances between cattle and sketching the cluster trees were estimated by using MEGA 5.05 software. Comparatively highest genetic distance (0.834) was found between RCC-82 and SL-623. The lowest genetic distance (0.031) was observed between M-1222 and M-5730. The genetic diversity of Red Chittagong and Sahiwal cattle was relatively higher for a prescribed breed. Adequate diversity in performance and adaptability can be exploited from the study results for actual improvement accruing to conservation and development of indigenous cattle resources.
