This paper represents a systematic approach aimed at improving the performance of the proportional integral (PI) controller for the Advanced Power Reactor (APR) 1400 Feedwater Control System (FWCS). When the performance of the PI controller offers superior control and enhanced robustness, the steam generator (SG) level is properly controlled. This leads to the safe operation and increased the availability of the nuclear power plant. In this paper, a systems engineering approach is used in order to design a novel PI controller for the FWCS. In the reverse engineering stage, the existing FWCS configuration, especially the characteristics of the feedwater controller as well as the feedwater flow path to each SG from the FWCS, were reviewed and analysed. The overall block diagram of the FWCS and the SG was also developed in the reverse engineering process. In the re-engineering stage, the actual design of the feedwater PI controller was carried out using a genetic algorithm (GA). Lastly, in the validation and verification phase, the existing PI controller and the PI controller designed using GA method were simulated in Simulink/Matlab. From the simulation results, the GA-PI controller was found to exhibit greater stability than the current controller of the FWCS.
The population sizes of three Korean indigenous cattle populations have been drastically reduced over the past decades. In this study, we examined the extent to which reduction in populations influenced genetic diversity, population structure and demographic history using complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences. The complete mtDNA control region was sequenced in 56 individuals from Korean Black (KB), Jeju Black (JEB) and Korean Brindle (BRI) cattle populations. We included 27 mtDNA sequences of Korean Brown (BRO) from the GenBank database. Haplotype diversity estimate for the total population was high (0.870) while nucleotide diversity was low (0.004). The KB showed considerably low nucleotide (${\pi}$ = 0.001) and haplotype (h = 0.368) diversities. Analysis of molecular variance revealed a low level of genetic differentiation but this was highly significant (p<0.001) among the cattle populations. Of the total genetic diversity, 7.6% was attributable to among cattle populations diversity and the rest (92.4%) to differences within populations. The mismatch distribution analysis and neutrality tests revealed that KB population was in genetic equilibrium or decline. Indeed, unless an appropriate breeding management practice is developed, inbreeding and genetic drift will further impoverish genetic diversity of these cattle populations. Rational breed development and conservation strategy is needed to safeguard these cattle population.
Propagation of Anagrapha falcifera nuclear polyhedrosis virus(AfNPV) was investigated using well-plates and split-flow air-lift bioreactors. In well-plate experiments, the effects of pH, cell density at a point of infection, serum concentration, DEAE-dextran, and lipid on virus propagation were all closely examined. The AfNPV titer in well-plates was optimal at pH 6.8 and $3{\times}10^6$ cells/$cm^2$. The virus titer was not dramatically affected when the fetal bovine serum concentration was reduced from 10% to 5%. The addition of cholesterol at AfNPV infection of Sf21 cells enhanced the virus titer, whereas the addition of DEAE-dextran did not improve the titer. The AfNPV titer ($3.8{\times}10^7$$TCID_{50}/ml$) at optimized conditions for well-plate experiments was 2.5-fold higher than for the control. In bioreactor experiments, the AfNPV titer showed its maximum level at air flow rates of 20-40 ml/min. In a split-flow air-lift bioreactor, AfNPV titer ($2.3{\times}10^7\;TCID_{50}/ml$) was 1.5-fold higher than the control when the culture was at pH 6.8 and supplemented with 0.34 mM cholesterol.
Objective: Poor ovarian response (POR) refers to a subnormal follicular response that leads to a decrease in the quality and quantity of the eggs retrieved after ovarian stimulation during assisted reproductive treatment (ART). The present study investigated the associations of multiple variants of the estrogen receptor 2 (ESR2) and follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) genes with POR in infertile Jordanian women undergoing ART. Methods: Four polymorphisms, namely ESR2 rs1256049, ESR2 rs4986938, FSHR rs6165, and FSHR rs6166, were investigated in 60 infertile Jordanian women undergoing ART (the case group) and 60 age-matched fertile women (the control group), with a mean age of 33.60±6.34 years. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected by restriction fragment length polymorphism and then validated using Sanger sequencing. Results: The p-value of the difference between the case and control groups regarding FSHR rs6166 was very close to 0.05 (p=0.054). However, no significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of the other three SNPs, namely ESR2 rs1256049, ESR2 rs4986938, and FSHR rs6165 (p=0.561, p=0.433, and p=0.696, respectively). Conclusion: The association between FSHR rs6166 and POR was not statistically meaningful in the present study, but the near-significant result of this experiment suggests that statistical significance might be found in a future study with a larger number of patients.
Objective: Tibetan pigs, an excellent species unique to China, face serious threats, which in turn affects the development and utilization of the outstanding advantages of plateau hypoxia adaptability and reduces their genetic diversity. Therefore, a discussion of measures to conserve this genetic resource is necessary. The method, based on genetic diversity, genetic divergence and total genetic contribution rate of population, reflects the priority conservation order and varies depending on the three different purposes of conservation. Methods: We analyzed mitochondrial DNA control region (D-loop) variation in 1,201 individuals from nine Tibetan pig populations across five provinces and downloaded 564 mtDNA D-loop sequences from three indigenous pig breeds in Qinghai, Sichuan, and Yunnan Provinces distributed near the Tibetan pigs. Results: We analyzed three different aspects: Changdu Tibetan pigs have the highest genetic diversity, and from the perspective of genetic diversity, the priority conservation is Changdu Tibetan pigs. Hezuo Tibetan pigs have the highest genetic contribution, so the priority conservation is Hezuo Tibetan pigs in the genetic contribution aspect. Rkaze Tibetan pigs were severely affected by indigenous pig breeds, so if considering from the perspective of introgression, the priority conservation is Rkaze Tibetan pigs. Conclusion: This study evaluated genetic diversity and comprehensively assessed conservation priority from three different aspects in nine Tibetan pig populations.

The giant roundworm Ascaris infects pigs and people worldwide and causes serious diseases. The taxonomic relationship between Ascaris suum and Ascaris lumbricoides is still unclear. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the genetic diversity and population genetic structure of 258 Ascaris specimens from humans and pigs from 6 sympatric regions in Ascaris-endemic regions of China using existing simple sequence repeat data. The microsatellite markers showed a high level of allelic richness and genetic diversity in the samples. Each of the populations demonstrated excess homozygosity (Ho0). According to a genetic differentiation index (Fst=0.0593), there was a high-level of gene flow in the Ascaris populations. A hierarchical analysis on molecular variance revealed remarkably high levels of variation within the populations. Moreover, a population structure analysis indicated that Ascaris populations fell into 3 main genetic clusters, interpreted as A. suum, A. lumbricoides, and a hybrid of the species. We speculated that humans can be infected with A. lumbricoides, A. suum, and the hybrid, but pigs were mainly infected with A. suum. This study provided new information on the genetic diversity and population structure of Ascaris from human and pigs in China, which can be used for designing Ascaris control strategies. It can also be beneficial to understand the introgression of host affiliation.
The detection of many synthetic chemicals used in industry that may pose a genetic hazard in our environment is subject of great concern at present. In this respect, the genetic toxicity of fenpropathrin ((RS)-.alpha.-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl-2,2,3,3-tetramethyl cyclopropane carboxylate, CAS No.:39514-41-8), a pyrethroid insecticide, was evaluated in bacterial gene mutation system, chromosome aberration in mammalian cell system and in vivo micronucleus assay with rodents. In bacterial gene mutation assay, no mutagenicity of fenpropathrin (62-$5000\mug/plate$) was observed in Salmonella typhimurium TA 98, 100, 1535 and 1537 both in the absence and in the presence of S-9 metabolic activaton system. In mammalian cell system using chinese hamster lung fibroblast, no clastogenicity of fenpropathrin was also observed both in the absence and in the presence of metabolic activation system in the concentration range of $7-28\mug/ml$. And also, in vivo micronucleus assay using mouse bone marrow cells, fenpropathrin also revealed no mutagenic potential in the dose range of 27-105 mg/kg body weight of fenpropathrin (i.p.). Consequently, no mutagenic potential of fenpropathrin was observed in vitro bacterial, mammalian mutagenicity systems and in vivo micronucleus assay in the dose ranges used in this experiment.

Predictive control is a very practical method that obtain the current input that minimizes the future errors of the reference command and state by use of the predictive model of the controlled object, and can also consider the constraints of the state and input. Although there have been studies in which predictive control is applied to mobile robots, performance has not been optimized as various control parameters for determining control performance have been arbitrarily specified. In this paper, we apply the genetic algorithm to the trajectory tracking control of a mobile robot with input constraints in order to minimize the trajectory tracking errors through control parameter tuning, and apply the quadratic programming Hildreth method to reflect the input constraints. Through the computer simulation, the superiority of the proposed method is confirmed by comparing with the existing method.

In this study, we introduce the design methodology of an optimized type-2 fuzzy cascade controller with the aid of hierarchical fair competition-based genetic algorithm(HFCGA) for ball & beam system. The ball & beam system consists of servo motor, beam and ball, and remains mutually connected in line in itself. The ball & beam system determines the position of ball through the control of a servo motor. Consequently the displacement change of the position of the moving ball and its ensuing change of the angle of the beam results in the change of the position angle of a servo motor. The type-2 fuzzy cascade controller scheme consists of the outer controller and the inner controller as two cascaded fuzzy controllers. In type-2 fuzzy logic controller(FLC) as the expanded type of type-1 fuzzy logic controller(FLC), we can effectively improve the control characteristic by using the footprint of uncertainty(FOU) of membership function. The control parameters(scaling factors) of each fuzzy controller using HFCGA which is a kind of parallel genetic algorithms(PGAs). HFCGA helps alleviate the premature convergence being generated in conventional genetic algorithms(GAs). We estimated controller characteristic parameters of optimized type-2 fuzzy cascade controller applied ball & beam system such as maximum overshoot, delay time, rise time, settling time and steady-state error. For a detailed comparative analysis from the viewpoint of the performance results and the design methodology, the proposed method for the ball & beam system which is realized by the fuzzy cascade controller based on HFCGA, is presented in comparison with the conventional PD cascade controller based on serial genetic algorithms.

In this paper, we propose the design of an optimized fuzzy cascade controller for rotary inverted pendulum system by means of Hierarchical Fair Competition-based Genetic Algorithms (HFCGA) which is a kind of parallel genetic algorithms. The rotary inverted pendulum system is the system for controlling the inclination of pendulum axis through the adjustment of rotating arm. The control objective of the system is to control the position of rotating arm and to make the pendulum maintain the unstable equilibrium point of vertical position. To control rotary inverted pendulum system, we designs the fuzzy cascade controller scheme consisted of two fuzzy controllers and optimizes the parameters of the designed controller by means of HFCGA. A comparative analysis between the simulation and the practical experiment demonstrates that the proposed HFCGA based fuzzy cascade controller leads to superb performance in comparison with the conventional LQR controller as well as HFCGA based PD cascade controller.
