  • The purpose of this study is to develop an entrainment model of the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) U-tube Steam Generator (SG) for Main Steam Line Break (MSLB) analyses. Generally, the temperature of the inside containment vessel at MSLB is decreased by introducing the liquid entrainment effect. This effect makes a profit on the aspect of integrity evaluation for Equipment Environmental Qualification (EEQ) in the containment. However, the target plant, Kori unit 1 does not have the entrainment data. Therefore, this study has been performed. RETRAN-3D and LOFTRAN computer programs are used for the model development. There are several parameters that are used for the initial benchmark, such as Combustion Engineerings (CE) experimental data and the RETRAN-3D model which describes the test leg. A sensitivity study is then performed with this model in which the model parameters are varied until the calculated results provide reasonable agreement with the measured results for the entire test set. Finally, a multiplication factor has been obtained from the 95/95 values of the calculated (best-estimate) quality data relative to the measured quality data. With this new methodology, an additional temperature margin of about 40$^{\circ}C$ can be obtained. So, the new methodology is found to have an explicit advantage to EQ analyses.

  • Recently, there is a demand for a thermal imaging microscope in the medical field as well as the semi-conductor industry Although the demand of the advanced thermal imaging microscope has been increased, it is very difficult to obtain the technology of developing a thermal camera, because it is used for defense industry. We developed the ${\times}5$ zoom microscope which has $3\;{\mu}m$ spatial resolution to research the design and fabrication of the IR (Infrared) optical system. The optical system of the IR microscope consists of four spherical lenses and four aspheric lenses. We verified individual sensitivity of each optical parameter as the first order approach to the analysis. And we also performed structure and vibration analysis. The optical elements are fabricated using Freeform 700A. The measurement results of surface roughness and form accuracy using NT 2000 and UA3P are Ra 2.36 nm and P-V $0.13\;{\mu}m$. Finally we ascertained resolution power of $3\;{\mu}m$ using USAF (United State Air Force) 1951 IR resolution test chart.

  • A new algorithm is suggested to solve the optimal reactive power and voltage control (optimal VAR control) problem. The model minimizes the real power losses in the system. The constraints include the reactive power limits of the generators, limits on the bus voltages and the operating limits of control variables-the transformer tap positions generator terminal voltages and switchable reactive power sources. The method presented herein, using a newly developed Jacobian decomposition method, employs linearized sensitivity relationships of power systems to establish both the objective function for minimizing the system losses and the system performance sensitivities relating dependent and control variables. The algorithm consists of two modules, i.e. the Q-V module for reactive power-voltage control, and load flow module for computational error adjustments. In particular the acceleration factor technique is introduced to enhance the convergence property in Q-V module. The combined use of the afore-mentioned two modules ensures more effective and efficient solutions for optimal reactive power dispatch problems. Results of the application of the method to a sample system and other worst-case systems demonstrated that the algorithm suggested herein is compared favourably with conventional ones in terms of computation accuracy and convergence characteristics.

  • This paper presents a new approach for optimal dispatch of energy and frequency regulation reserve considering contingency in a competitive electricity market. It is necessary to introduce the reserve market with the spot energy market for operating efficiently and obtaining the security of the electricity market. However, the reserve market is closely connected with the energy market since the energy and reserve are produced from the same resources. Thus, it is inevitable to co-optimize the energy and ancillary service for efficient operation of energy and ancillary service market. Therefore, this paper proposes a new method for optimal dispatch of energy and frequency regulation reserve considering n-1 contingency of generator and transmission line using constraints and sensitivity based on AC power flow To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the numerical studies have been performed for 5-bus sample system and modified IEEE 14-bus system.

  • This paper presents a simple method for evaluating of voltage stability using the line flow equation. Line flow equations($P_{ij}$, $Q_{ij}$) are comprised of state variable, $V_i$, ${\delta}_i$, $V_j$ and ${\delta}_j$, and line parameter, r and x. Using the feature of polar coordinate, these equations become one equation with two variables, $V_i$ and $V_j$. Moreover, if bus j is slack bus or generator bus, which is specified voltage magnitude, it becomes One equation with one variable $V_i$, that is, may be formulated with the second-order equation for $V_i^2$. Therefore, solutions are obtained with simple computation. Solutions obtained are used for evaluating of voltage stability through sensitivity analysis. Also, considering of reactive power source, method for evaluating the voltage stability is introduced. The proposed method was validated to 2-bus and IEEE 6-bus system.

  • Online monitoring system is becoming an essential element of railway traction system for utilized to condition based malignance management and various techniques currently employed in railway traction system. Among the various techniques, it is efficient to detect partial discharge signals by electromagnetic wave detection in order to detect insulation fault of rectifier. Although VHF (Very High Frequency), UHF (Ultra High Frequency) sensors were adopted to detect partial discharge of power facilities, due to characteristics of urban railway, excessive noise occurs from 500 MHz to 1.5 GHz on UHF bandwidth. In this paper a new measurement system able to monitoring the conditions of power facilities on DC substation in metro was studied and set up. The system uses UHF sensors to measure the partial discharge of the rectifier due to electric faulting and dielectric breakdown. Comparison and estimation for performance of SHF sensor which had devised to detect partial discharge signal of urban railway rectifier has conducted. In order to estimate performance of SHF sensor, we have compared the sensor with existing UHF sensor on sensitivity upon frequency bandwidth generated by pulse generator, and also we have verified performance of the SHF sensor by detection results of partial discharge signal from urban railway rectifier.

  • To measure underwater acoustics using a fiber-optic Sagnac interferometric sensor, the sensitivities of ring-type probes are investigated by theoretical and experimental studies. A ring-type probe was fabricated by packaging a single-mode fiber wound around an acrylate cylinder of diameter 5 cm with epoxy bond. The probes were prepared as A-type, which was packaged with 46.84 m of sensing optical fiber, and B-type, which was packaged with 112.22 m of sensing fiber. The underwater acoustic test was performed at frequencies of 50, 70, and 90 kHz, and over a range of acoustic pressure of 20-100 Pa, to study the sensitivity. A commercial acoustic generator was located 1 m from the acoustic sensor, such as the ring-type probe or a commercial acoustic sensor. From the experimental test, the acoustic sensitivity of the ring-type probe had different values due to acoustic frequencies, unlike the theoretical prediction. Therefore, the experimental sensitivities were averaged for comparison to the theoretical values. These averaged sensitivities are 25.48 × 10-5 rad/Pa for the A-type probe and 60.79 × 10-5 rad/Pa for the B-type probe. The correction coefficient of Young's modulus c was determined to be 0.35.

  • In Korea, a real-time effective dose measurement system is in development. The system uses 32 high-sensitivity MOSFET dosimeters to measure radiation doses at various organ locations in an anthropomorphic physical phantom. The MOSFET dosimeters are, however, mainly made of silicon and shows some degree of energy and angular dependence especially for low energy photons. This study determines the correction factors to correct for these dependences of the MOSFET dosimeters for accurate measurement of radiation doses at organ locations in the phantom. For this, first, the dose correction factors of MOSFET dosimeters were determined for the energy spectrum in the steam generator channel of the Kori Nuclear Power Plant Unit #1 by Monte Carlo simulations. Then, the results were compared with the dose correction factors from 0.652 MeV and 1.25 MeV mono-energetic photons. The difference of the dose correction factors were found very negligible $(\leq1.5%)$, which in general shows that the dose corrections factors determined from 0.662 MeV and 1.25 MeV can be in a steam general channel head of a nuclear power plant. The measured effective dose was generally found to decrease bit $\sim7%$ when we apply the dose correction factors.

  • Background: We investigated the longevity, thresholds of epicardial pacemaker and causes of reoperation in the pediatric patients who underwent epicardial pacemaker implantation performed during the last 13 years Material and Method: 121 operations were performed in 83 patients from January 1989 to July 2002. We analyzed the stimulation threshold, resistance, R-wave and P-wave, and sensitivity of pacemaker lead at initial implantation. Longevity and causes of reoperations were investigated. Result At implantation, epicardial ventricular mean stimula-tion threshold was 1.2$\pm$0.1 (0.1∼5) mV, mean resistance was 519.1$\pm$18.1 (319∼778) Ohm, and mean R-wave sensitivity was 8.9$\pm$0.7 (4∼20) mV, and mean P wave sensivity was 2.5$\pm$0.7 (0.4∼12) mV. The mean longe-vity of pacemaker generator was 64.7$\pm$3.7 (2∼196) months. The reoperation free rate was 94.6% for 1 year, 93.6% for 2 years, 80.8% for 5years, 63.7% for 7 years, and 45.5% for 10 years. The causes of reoperation were battery waste in 26 cases and lead malfunction in 9 cases. There was no postoperative death related to pacemaker malfunction. Conclusion: in the childrens, average longevity of epicardial pacemaker was within accep-table range. 19.1% of the patients required pacemaker related reoperation. However, recent developments, including steroid eluting lead, 6.7% of the patients required pacemaker related reoperation, look promising in expansion of pacemaker life span.

  • This paper reports on our development of a dual-mode transceiver for a CMOS high-rate Bluetooth system-onchip solution. The transceiver includes most of the radio building blocks such as an active complex filter, a Gaussian frequency shift keying (GFSK) demodulator, a variable gain amplifier (VGA), a dc offset cancellation circuit, a quadrature local oscillator (LO) generator, and an RF front-end. It is designed for both the normal-rate Bluetooth with an instantaneous bit rate of 1 Mb/s and the high-rate Bluetooth of up to 12 Mb/s. The receiver employs a dualconversion combined with a baseband dual-path architecture for resolving many problems such as flicker noise, dc offset, and power consumption of the dual-mode system. The transceiver requires none of the external image-rejection and intermediate frequency (IF) channel filters by using an LO of 1.6 GHz and the fifth order onchip filters. The chip is fabricated on a $6.5-mm^{2}$ die using a standard $0.25-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. Experimental results show an in-band image-rejection ratio of 40 dB, an IIP3 of -5 dBm, and a sensitivity of -77 dBm for the Bluetooth mode when the losses from the external components are compensated. It consumes 42 mA in receive ${\pi}/4-diffrential$ quadrature phase-shift keying $({\pi}/4-DQPSK)$ mode of 8 Mb/s, 35 mA in receive GFSK mode of 1 Mb/s, and 32 mA in transmit mode from a 2.5-V supply. These results indicate that the architecture and circuits are adaptable to the implementation of a low-cost, multi-mode, high-speed wireless personal area network.
