Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have facilitated substantial improvement in single-image super-resolution (SR) by enabling the generation of photo-realistic images. However, the high memory requirements of GAN-based SRs (mainly generators) lead to reduced performance and increased energy consumption, making it difficult to implement them onto resource-constricted devices. In this study, we propose an efficient and compressed architecture for the SR-GAN (generator) model using the model compression technique Knowledge Distillation. Our approach involves the transmission of knowledge from a heavy network to a lightweight one, which reduces the storage requirement of the model by 58% with also an increase in their performance. Experimental results on various benchmarks indicate that our proposed compressed model enhances performance with an increase in PSNR, SSIM, and image quality respectively for x4 super-resolution tasks.

In this paper, we investigate the comparative performance of two leading object detection architectures, YOLOv7 and Detection Transformer (DETR), across varying levels of data augmentation using CycleGAN. Our experiments focus on chest scan images within the context of biomedical informatics, specifically targeting the detection of abnormalities. The study reveals that YOLOv7 consistently outperforms DETR across all levels of augmented data, maintaining better performance even with 75% augmented data. Additionally, YOLOv7 demonstrates significantly faster convergence, requiring approximately 30 epochs compared to DETR's 300 epochs. These findings underscore the superiority of YOLOv7 for object detection tasks, especially in scenarios with limited data and when rapid convergence is essential. Our results provide valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in the field of computer vision, highlighting the effectiveness of YOLOv7 and the importance of data augmentation in improving model performance and efficiency.

Recently, the speed and size of data accumulation are increasing due to the development of networks. There are many difficulties in classifying these data. One of the difficulties is the difficulty of labeling. Labeling is usually done by people, but it is very difficult for everyone to understand the data in the same way and it is very difficult to label them on the same basis. In order to solve this problem, we implemented GAN to generate new image based on input image and to learn input data indirectly by using it for learning. This suggests that the accuracy of classification can be increased by increasing the number of learning data.

Cracks in bridges are important factors that indicate the condition of bridges and should be monitored periodically. However, a visual inspection conducted by a human expert has problems in cost, time, and reliability. Therefore, in recent years, researches to apply a deep learning model are started to be conducted. Deep learning requires sufficient data on the situations to be predicted, but bridge crack data is relatively difficult to obtain. In particular, it is difficult to collect a large amount of crack data in a specific situation because the shape of bridge cracks may vary depending on the bridge's design, location, and construction method. This study developed a crack detection model that generates and trains insufficient crack data through a Generative Adversarial Network. GAN successfully generated data statistically similar to the given crack data, and accordingly, crack detection was possible with about 3% higher accuracy when using the generated image than when the generated image was not used. This approach is expected to effectively improve the performance of the detection model as it is applied when crack detection on bridges is required, though there is not enough data, also when there is relatively little or much data f or one class.
In this paper, we propose a video enhancement method using generative adversarial networks to remove raindrops and restore the background information on the removed region in the coastal wave video imagery distorted by raindrops during rainfall. Two experimental models are implemented: Pix2Pix network widely used for image-to-image translation and Attentive GAN, which is currently performing well for raindrop removal on a single images. The models are trained with a public dataset of paired natural images with and without raindrops and the trained models are evaluated their performance of raindrop removal and background information recovery of rainwater distortion of coastal wave video imagery. In order to improve the performance, we have acquired paired video dataset with and without raindrops at the real coast and conducted transfer learning to the pre-trained models with those new dataset. The performance of fine-tuned models is improved by comparing the results from pre-trained models. The performance is evaluated using the peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity index and the fine-tuned Pix2Pix network by transfer learning shows the best performance to reconstruct distorted coastal wave video imagery by raindrops.
Ship detection in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is an important application in marine monitoring for the military and civilian domains. Over the past decade, object detection has achieved significant progress with the development of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and lot of labeled databases. However, due to difficulty in collecting and labeling SAR images, it is still a challenging task to solve SAR ship detection CNNs. To overcome the problem, some methods have employed conventional data augmentation techniques such as flipping, cropping, and affine transformation, but it is insufficient to achieve robust performance to handle a wide variety of types of ships. In this paper, we present a novel and effective approach for deep SAR ship detection, that exploits label-rich Electro-Optical (EO) images. The proposed method consists of two components: a data augmentation network and a ship detection network. First, we train the data augmentation network based on conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN), which aims to generate additional SAR images from EO images. Since it is trained using unpaired EO and SAR images, we impose the cycle-consistency loss to preserve the structural information while translating the characteristics of the images. After training the data augmentation network, we leverage the augmented dataset constituted with real and translated SAR images to train the ship detection network. The experimental results include qualitative evaluation of the translated SAR images and the comparison of detection performance of the networks, trained with non-augmented and augmented dataset, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

In recent research, deep learning-based methods have achieved state-of-the-art performance in various computer vision tasks. However, these methods are commonly supervised, and require huge amounts of annotated data to train. Acquisition of data demands an additional costly effort, particularly for the tasks where it becomes challenging to obtain large amounts of data considering the time constraints and the requirement of professional human diligence. In this paper, we present a data level synthetic sampling solution to learn from small and imbalanced data sets using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). The reason for using GANs are the challenges posed in various fields to manage with the small datasets and fluctuating amounts of samples per class. As a result, we present an approach that can improve learning with respect to data distributions, reducing the partiality introduced by class imbalance and hence shifting the classification decision boundary towards more accurate results. Our novel method is demonstrated on a small dataset of 2789 tomato plant disease images, highly corrupted with class imbalance in 9 disease categories. Moreover, we evaluate our results in terms of different metrics and compare the quality of these results for distinct classes.

This study presents a method for capturing photographs of users as input and converting them into 2D character animation sprites using a generative adversarial network-based artificial intelligence network. Traditionally, 2D character animations have been created by manually creating an entire sequence of sprite images, which incurs high development costs. To address this issue, this study proposes a technique that combines motion videos and sample 2D images. In the 2D sprite generation process that uses the proposed technique, a sequence of images is extracted from real-life images captured by the user, and these are combined with character images from within the game. Our research aims to leverage cutting-edge deep learning-based image manipulation techniques, such as the GAN-based motion transfer network (impersonator) and background noise removal (U2 -Net), to generate a sequence of animation sprites from a single image. The proposed technique enables the creation of diverse animations and motions just one image. By utilizing these advancements, we focus on enhancing productivity in the game and animation industry through improved efficiency and streamlined production processes. By employing state-of-the-art techniques, our research enables the generation of 2D sprite images with various motions, offering significant potential for boosting productivity and creativity in the industry.
