  • The generation amounts of manure and urine were total 4.57kg/head/d of 1.49kg manure/head/d and 3.08kg urine/head/d with consideration of 3 seasons and live weight. The finalized mean unit load generation of filth were estimated at BOD 199.5g/head/d, CODCr 413.5g/head/d, T-N 27.8g/head/d, T-P 5.3g/head/d with consideration of seasons and the type of stalls. The unit load generation of manure and urine from korean cow were analyzed as 10.9kg/head/day and 3.3kg/head/day, respectively. The unit load generation of manure from milch cow was analyzed to be 24.6L/head/day which was similar to the report of MOE(2006). The urine generation, 10.5L/head/day, was higher than the results from MOA(2000) and NIAR(2000), but was lower than the results from MOE(2006), NIER(1986) and KIST(1990). The unit load generation from egg layers estimated by discharged amount and concentration analysis increases in due to the difference of planting head numbers, feed stuffs and manure disposal. In case of deer unit load generation by herbivora were calculated to be higher than data from existing references because of the gap between weight per livestock and the generation amounts of manure and urine.

  • The study examined revenue generation trend and perception of challenges facing it by forestry personnel in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Data for the study was generated through primary and secondary sources. Primary sources involved the use of questionnaire which was administered to all Forest Officers and Uniformed Field Staff in all the 31 Forest Division and Headquarter in the state. Secondary sources involved collation of generated revenue from all the divisions for the study period. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics including Least square regression. The results indicated an increasing trend in forest revenue for the state statistically defined by the function y=45631x-900000000+e (p>0.05) with a coefficient of determination of 0.7492 or 74.92%. There was also a positive correlation (r=0.866) between generated revenue and year for the 20 years under review. The mean revenue was ₦4776247.00 with the highest generated revenue (₦9823550.00) in 2014. However, majority (55.13%) of the respondents perceived revenue generation in the state to be decreasing and attributed the decline majorly to lack of mobility (16.84%) and insufficient man power (15.79%). Attitude and level of offence in the study area was perceived to be fairly cooperative (62.81%) and high (43.80%), while recruitment of more personnel (11.05%) and provision of mobility (10.03%) was considered an effective means of improving revenue generation in the state. Also, educating the people and regular patrol by forest personnel was considered as the best ways of curtailing forest offences in the area. The study recommended increased allocation of funds to the sector in addition to tackling the challenges faced by the personnel.

  • Purpose : We investigated the reproducibility of language lateralization by 4 different word generation paradigms or the rest contents in each paradigm using functional magnetic resonance imaging in normal volunteers Materials and Methods Nine normal volunteers with left-handedness (mean age: 25 yrs) were examined on a 1.57 MR unit using a single-shot gradient echo epibold sequence. Four different word generation paradigms of noun, verb, adjective and adverb were used in each normal volunteer for investigating language system. In each paradigm, two different rest contents consisted of only seeing the " +" symbol or reading the meaningless letters. Each task consisted of 96 phases including 3 activations and 6 rests of 2 different contents. Two activation maps in one task were obtained under two different rest contents using the correlation method. We evaluated the detection rates of Broca and Wernicke areas and the differences of language lateralization among four different word generation paradigms, or between the rest contents. Results : The detection rates of Broca and Wernicke areas were over 67 % in 4 different language paradigms and there was no significant difference of them among language paradigms, or between two different rest contents. Language dominances, in all 4 different language paradigms, were shown to be consistent in 66 %, but were contrary with language paradigms in some subjects. The rest contents made no significant effect on dominant language dominance determination, but the success rates of the dominant language dominances determined from 4 language paradigms were higher in reading the meaningless letter (100%, n=9) than in only seeing "+" on screen at the rest task (78%, n=7).

  • To investigate the fidelity of transgene transmission and expression, we produced transgenic mice carrying bovine $\beta$-casein/bovine grwoth hormone(bGH) fusion gene and examined transmission efficiency and expression level of the transgene in the founders and their progeny. The transgene was composed of 1.8 kb bovine $\beta$-casein promoter and 2.1 kb bGH gene. Ten transgenic mice were produced. Milk and mammary gland were collected from eight transgenic lines at 10-day lactation and a, pp.ied to Western and Northern blot analyses. The bGH expression was detected in four of them. The concentrations of bGH in milk were highly variable from 4$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml to 600$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml depending on the lines. The bGH mRNA level in mammary gland was closely correlated with the bGH concentration in milk in each transgenic line. These results indicated that bGH transgene expression was a, pp.opriately regulated in the mammary gland and secreted into milk in transgenic mice. By using two transgenic lines(#2, #7) secreting a considerable amoung of bGH into their milk, the inferitance and maintenance of transgenic phenotype were assessed in successive four generations. The mean transmission frequencies of transgene in lines #2 and #7 were 34% and 40%, respectively. The bGH concentration in milk were 80, 240, 120, 60$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml in each G0(generation 0), G2, G3, G4 generation of line #2 and 600, 1600, 860, 900$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml in each G1. G2, G3, G4 generation of line #7. These results demonstrated that bovine $\beta$-casein/bGH gene was stably transmitted from generation to generation in a Menelian fashion in trasgenic mice and consistenly expressed in their milk throughout the generations, although there was a little variation in the transmission frequency and expression level of the transgene between generations.

  • To evaluate food consumption patterns of first generation Korean-American in Hawaii, questionnaires were developed using sociodemographic questions and food frequency questionnaire, which included 139 food items most often consumed among Korean foods and American foods. The questionnaires surveyed 157 first generation Korean-Americans in Hawaii. Mean daily servings for the first generation Korean-Americans were calculated for 139 food items combined into 41 food groups based on similarity in nutrient composition and serving size. The food groups which were consumed in amounts over one serving per day for all subjects were rice, Kimchi , non-citrus fruit , vegetables, organge/green vegetables. oil. margarine and coffee/tea. All subjects consumed less than one serving of hotdogs, hamburgers, pizza and pancakes per week(0.14 serving per day). The most notable characteristic of food consumption for first generation Korean-Americans was that they consumed more Korean food such as rice, Kimchi, soybean paste(Deenjang), soybean curd and seaweed than American foods. Compared with other groups based on age and gender, younger men showed significantly(p<0.05) more frequent consumption of beef/pork, sausages /hams /bacons and hambergers. Older men were significantly(p<0.05) more likely to consume Doenjang and less likely to consume pizza and hamburgers. Daily servings were below the recommended level for thegrains /bread/cereals group and fats/oils/sweets group for all subjects . Fruits/vegetables group servings exceeded the recommeded 5 daily servings for younger men. In correlations of daily servings of selected foods among Korean foods and American food with sociodemographic characteristics, this study showed that the older the subjects and the shorter the stay in Hawaii, subjects were more likely to consume Kroean foods.

  • Wave power distribution is investigated to determine the optimal sites for wave power generation at Jeju sea which has the highest wave energy density in the Korean coastal waters. The spatial and seasonal variation of wave power per unit length is calculated in the Jeju sea area based on the monthly mean wave data from 1979 to 2002 which is produced by the SWAN wave model simulation in prior research. The selected favorable locations for wave power generation are compared in terms of magnitude of wave energy density and distribution characteristics of wave parameters. The results suggest that Chagui-Do is the most optimal site for wave power generation in the Jeju sea. The seasonal distribution of wave energy density reveals that the highest wave energy density occurs in the northwest sea in the winter and it is dominated by wind waves, while the second highest one happens at south sea in the summer and it is dominated by a swell sea. The annual average of wave energy density shows that it gradually increases from east to west of the Jeju sea. At Chagui-Do, the energy density of the sea swell sea is relatively uniform while the energy density of the wind waves is variable and strong in the winter.

  • Severe downslope windstorms observed at Gangneung, Korea in the springtime during the last 30 years are studied to understand their generation mechanisms. 92 severe wind cases are selected for which the maximum instantaneous wind speeds exceed two standard deviation of total mean plus ($18.7ms^{-1}$). They are categorized into the three mechanisms (hydraulic jump, partial reflection, and critical-level reflection) proposed in previous studies based on the flow condition, which is calculated using the wind and temperature profile observed at one upstream rawinsonde station, Osan. Among the three, partial reflection is found to be the most frequent mechanism for the last 30 years (1976 - 2005). To understand the role of inversion in generating severe downslope windstorms, horizontal velocity perturbation was calculated analytically for the atmosphere with an inversion layer. It turned out that the intensity of downslope wind was increased by inversion layer of specific heights, which are well matched with the observations. For better understanding the generation mechanisms, two-dimensional numerical simulations are conducted for the 92 severe wind cases using the ARPS model. In most simulations, surface wind speed exceeds the value of the severe-wind criterion, and each simulated case can be explained by its own generation mechanism. However, in most simulations, the simulated surface wind speed is larger than the observed, due to ignoring the flow-splitting effect in the two-dimensional framework.

  • This paper deals with how speech rate in Korean is affected by the sociolinguistic factors such as region, gender and generation. Speech rate was quantified as articulation rate (excluding physical pauses) and speaking rate (including physical pauses), both expressed as the number of syllables per second (sps). Other acoustic measures such as pause frequency and duration were also examined. Four hundred twelve subjects were chosen from Korean Standard Speech Database considering their age, gender and region. The result shows that generation has a significant effect on both speaking rate and articulation rate. Younger speakers produce their speech with significantly faster speaking rate and articulation rate than older speakers. Mean duration of total pause interval and the total number of pause of older speakers are also significantly different to those of younger speakers. Gender has a significant effect only on articulation rate, which means male speakers' speech rate is characterized by faster articulation rate, longer and more frequent pauses. Finally, region has no effect both on speaking and articulation rates.

  • In countries with FMD vaccination, as in Korea, typical clinical signs do not appear, and even in FMD positive cases, it is difficult to isolate the FMDV or obtain whole genome sequence. To overcome this problem, more rapid and simple NGS system is required to control FMD in Korea. FMDV (O/Boeun/ SKR/2017) RNA was extracted and sequenced using Ion Torrent's bench-top sequencer with amplicon panel with optimized bioinformatics pipelines. The whole genome sequencing of raw data generated data of 1,839,864 (mean read length 283 bp) reads comprising a total of 521,641,058 (≥Q20 475,327,721). Compared with FMDV (GenBank accession No. MG983730), the FMDV sequences in this study showed 99.83% nucleotide identity. Further study is needed to identify these differences. In this study, fast and robust methods for benchtop next generation sequencing (NGS) system was developed for analysis of Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) whole genome sequences.
