  • In general, there are three kinds of methods in analyzing dynamic robust design experiment: loss model approach, response function approach, and response model approach. In this talk, we review the three modeling approaches in terms of several criteria in comparison. This talk also generalizes the response model approach based on a generalized linear model. We develop a generalized two-step optimization procedure to substantially reduce the process variance by dampening the effect of both explicit and hidden noise variables. The proposed method provides more reliable results through iterative modeling of the residuals from the fitted response model. The method is compared with three existing approaches in practical examples.

  • A finite difference model for predicting time-dependent, wave-induced nearshore current is studied. The model includes wave refraction, wave-current interaction, bottom friction and wind effect. This model iteratively solved the linear the linear set of conservation of both mass and momentum, which were time averaged (over one wave period) and depth integrated, for mean velocities and free surface displacement. Numerical simulations of nearshore current under oblique wave attack, and for wave and wind induced current on a longshore periodic beach are carried out. Longshore velocities tend to zero in some distances outside the breaker line. And the peak velocity is shifted shoreward at the breaker line. The results represent the general characteristics of the nearshore current induced by wave.

  • Many of today´s robot are required to perform tasks which demand a high level of accuracy in end-effector positioning. Those rigid robots are very inefficient and slow because its have large and heavy links, In an attempt to solve these problems, a robots using flexible beam were created. But the single-link flexible beam is infinite-dimensional system. Many researchers have proposed controlling such a beam an approximated model consisting of a finite a number of models. In this paper, we start by deriving the analytic model for the dynamics of general single-link beam, and a controller is designed for flexible beam with integral type servo system bases of the linear matrix inequality (LM) technique. To the end, simulation results show that a designed controller guarantees affective vibration control the single-link flexible beam.

  • Several reactor system components, such as heat exchange tubes, fuel fins, controlrods, and various instruments are beam-like components. This study presents a simple solution method for calculating the natural frequencies and modes of beams supported by linear and torsional springs and attached concentrated mass and rotational inertia at some intermediate points. For a general multi-span beam, theoretical method is proposed to analyze the exact solution about vibrational characteristics with respect to the nondimensional parameters. And the results obtained using the numerical models are presented and discussed.

  • When formulating a general, non-linear mathematical model of ship dynamics in waves the hydrostatic forces and moments along with the Froude-Krylov part of wave load are usually concerned. Normally radiation and the diffraction forces are regarded as linear ones. The paper discusses briefly few approaches, which can be used in this respect. The concerned models attempt to model the non-linearities of the surface waves; both regular and the irregular ones, and the nonlinearities of the restoring forces and moments. The approach selected in the Laidyn method, which is meant for the evaluation of large amplitude motions in the 6 degrees-of-freedom, is presented in a bigger detail. The workability of the method is illustrated with the simulation of ship motions in irregular stern quartering waves.

  • PR interval variability has been proposed as a noninvasive tool for in-vestigating the autonomic nervous system as welt as heart rate variability. The goal of this paper is to determine whether PR interval variability is generated from deterministic nonlinear dynamics. The data used in this study is a 24-hour bolter ECGs of 20 healthy adults. We developed an automatic PR interval measurement algorithm, and tested it using MIT ECG Databases. The general discriminants of nonlinear dynamics, such as, correlation dimension and phase space reconstruction are used. Surrogate data is generated from simpler linear models to have similar statistical characteristics with the original data. Nonlinear discriminants are applied to both data, and compared for any significant results. It was concluded that PR interval variability shows non-linear characteristics.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach to solve stochastic fluid flow models applied to the analysis of ceil loss of an ATM multiplexer. Existing stochastic fluid flow models have been analyzed by using linear differential equations. In case of large state space, however. analyzing stochastic fluid flow model without numerical errors is not easy. To avoid this numerical errors and to analyze stochastic fluid flow model with large state space. we develope a new computational algorithm. Instead of solving differential equations directly, this approach uses iterative and numerical method without calculating eigenvalues. eigenvectors and boundary coefficients. As a result, approximate solutions and upper and lower bounds are obtained. This approach can be applied to stochastic fluid flow model having general Markov chain structure as well as to the superposition of heterogeneous ON-OFF sources it can be extended to Markov process having non-exponential sojourn times.

  • In this paper, an optimal FIR (Finite-Impulse-Response) filter is proposed for discrete time-varying state-space models. The proposed filter estimates the current state using measured output samples on the recent time horizon so that the variance of the estimation error is minimized. It is designed to be linear, unbiased, with an FIR structure, and is independent of any state information. Due to its FIR structure, the proposed filter is believed to be robust for modeling uncertainty or numerical errors than other IIR filters, such as the Kalman filter. For a general system with system and measurement noise, the proposed filter is derived without any artificial assumptions such as the nonsingular assumption of the system matrix A and any infinite covariance of the initial state. A numerical example show that the proposed FIR filter has better performance than the Kalman filter based on the IIR (Infinite- Impulse-Response) structure when modeling uncertainties exist.

  • Special consideration should be given to differential column shortening during the design and construction of a tall building to mitigate the adverse effects caused by such shortening. The effects of the outrigger - which is conventionally used to increase the lateral stiffness of a tall building - on the differential shortening are investigated in this study. Three analysis models, a constant-section, constant-stress, and general model, are prepared, and the differential shortenings of these models with and without the outrigger are compared. The effects of connection time, sectional area, and location of the outrigger on the differential shortening are studied. The sectional area of the outrigger shows a non-linear relation in reducing the maximum differential shortening. The optimum locations of the single and dual outriggers are investigated by an exhaustive search method, and it is confirmed that a global optimum location exists. This study shows that the outrigger can be utilized to reduce the differential shortening between the interior core wall and the perimeter columns as well as to reduce the lateral displacements due to wind or earthquake loads.

  • The paper presents the formulation of 3-nodal line semi-analytical Mindlin-Reissner finite strip in the buckling analysis of thin-walled members, which are subjected to arbitrary loads. The finite strip is simply supported in two opposite edges. The general loading and in-plane rotation techniques are used to develop this finite strip. The linear stiffness matrix and the geometric stiffness matrix of the finite strip are given in explicit forms. To validate the proposed model and study its performance, numerical examples of some thin-walled sections have been performed and the results obtained have been compared with finite element models and the published ones.
