Bovine aortic endothelial cells(BAEC) produce two variant forms of laminin with a subunit composition of AB1B2 and A'B1B2. Analyses of the intracellular assembly of these subunits revealed that the B1B2 dimer formed first, and that A or A' joined to form the AB1B2 or A'B1B2 trimer. Angiostatic steroids shifted the relative size of the A and A' monomer pool in BAEC, and competition between the A and A' subunits in joining the B1B2 dimer produced AB1B2 and A'B1B2 in different ratios. This result suggests that subunit replacement is the general mechanism for producing laminin variants by various cells for tissue morphogenesis. When laminin subunits in BAEC were cross-linked with dithio-bis-succinimidylpropionate(DSP) and immunoprecipitated with anti-Iaminin antiserum, monomeric A,A',B1 and B2 monomers and the B1B2 dimer migrated as extremely large molecules in sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis under nonreducing conditions. When the crosslinking disulfide bonds were cleaved under reducing conditions, they migrated as the usual subunits. This result suggests that molecular chaperones were involved in the process of the assembly and replacement of laminin subunits.

Presented in the paper is a systematic approach to constructing a Petri net model of FAS (flexible assembly system). Petri net is widely used in modeling automated manufacturing systems. But, it found to be very difficult for an FA engineer to build a correct model of an FAS with Petri net symbols (ie, place, transition, and token) from the beginning. An automated manufacturing system in general is built from a set of "standard" hardware components. An FAS in particular is usually composed of assembly robots, work tables, conveyor lines, buffer storages, part feeders, etc. In the proposed modeling scheme, each type of standard resources is represented as a standard "module" which is a sub Petri net. Then, the model of a FAS can be conveniently constructed using the predefined modules the same way the FAS itself is built from the standard components. The network representation of a FAS is termed a JR-net (job resource relation net) which is easy to construct. This JR net is then mechanically converted to a formal Petri net (to simulate the behavior of the FAS). The proposed modeling scheme may easily be extended to the modeling of other types of automated manufacturing systems such as FMS and AS/RS.ch as FMS and AS/RS.
Graphic health warning on the tobacco product package is a cost-effective tobacco control policy to convey information on harmful effect of tobacco use to health, and it is known not only to motivate smokers to quit but also to deter adolescents from start smoking. In case of Korea, amendments to National Health Promotion Act requiring implementation of graphic health warning had been submitted 13 times, from 2002 to May 2015. In May 2015, the amendment had been approved by the National Assembly and it enters into force on December 23, 2016. This research analyzed the discussions from Health and Welfare Committee of the National Assembly during the implementation of the graphic health warning in order to study decision making process of legislators. Study found that there was a shift from a general opposition on implementing graphic health warning at first to a harsh conflict over relaxation of the regulation once discussing the implementation in earnest. Particularly, while the group supporting the implementation of the graphic health warning or opposing relaxation advocated the amendment with scientific and knowledge-based evidences including the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, the group opposing the adoption of the amendment itself or suggesting relaxation tended to defend their position with empathy on smokers or tobacco industries.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the adequacy of production capacity of the assembly process system of mobile bath vehicle's top box panel and process design through a simulation analysis. Towards this end, the layout of the facility designed with pre-verification job using a simulation modeling and an experiment, and facility, logistics process, and personnel input method were made into a simulation model, and the design system's adequacy was evaluated through an experiment. To produce 120 mobile bath vehicles annually, it was analyzed that 14 general workers and seven skilled workers were adequate through the experiment. It was also identified that three painting process lines carried out through outsourcing were adequate. Production lead time was 201.7 hours on average and it was 230 hours maximum. To meet customer delivery service level of 95% within the deadline when establishing a customer order and vehicle delivery plan, it was analyzed that more than 215 hours of lead time is needed minimum. If the process cycle time is reduced to 85% upon system stabilization and skillfulness improvement, it was analyzed that annual output of 147 vehicles can be achieved without additional production line expansion.
An efficient method based on analytic solutions is applied to solve anti-plane Mode III crack problems. The analytic technique developed earlier by the present authors for Laplace's equation in a simply-connected region is now extended to general Mode III crack problems. Unlike typical numerical methods which require fine meshing near crack tips, the present method divides the cracked bodies, typically non-convex or multiply-connected, into only a few super elements. In each super element, an element stiffness matrix, relating the series coefficients of the traction and displacement, is first formed. Then an assembly algorithm similar to that used in the finite elements, is first formed. Then an assembly algorithm similar to that used in the finite elements, is developed. A big advantage of the present method is that only the boundary conditions are to be satisfied in the solution procedure due to the use of analytic solutions. Several numerical results demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the present method.
This paper considers the genetic algorithms(GAs) for the mixed model assembly line sequencing(MMALS) in which the objective is to minimize the overall line length. To apply the GAs to the MMALS, the representation, selection, genetic sequencing operators, and genetic parameters are studied. Especially, the existing sequencing binary operators such as partially map crossover(PMX), cycle crossover(CX), and order crossover (OX) are modified to be suitable for the MMALS, and a new sequencing binary operator called immediate successor relationship crossover (ISR) is introduced. These binary operators mentioned above and/or unary operators such as swap, insertion, inversion, displacement, and splice are compared to find operators which work well in the MMALS. Experimental results indicate that 1) among the binary operators ISR operator is the best, followed by the modified OX, and the modified PMX, with the modified CX being the worst, 2) among the unary operators inversion operator is the best, followed by displacement, swap, and insertion, with splice being the worst, and 3) in general, the unary operators perform better than the binary operators for the MMALS.
Assembly/Disassembly Queueing Networks (ADQNs) with finite buffers have been used as a major tool for evaluating the performances of manufacturing and parallel processing systems. In this study, we present simple but effective methods which yield throughput upper and lower bounds for ADQNs with exponential service times and finite buffers. These methods are based on the monotonicity properties of throughputs with respect to service times and buffer capacities. The throughput-upper bounding method is elaborated on with general network configuration (specifically acyclic configuration). But our lower bounding method is restricted to the ADQNs with more specialized configuration. Computational experiments will be performed to confirm the effectiveness of our throughput-bounding methods.

To survive in the current shipbuilding industry it is of vital importance for shipyards to achieve an optimal utilization of resources, make an achievable planning and ensure that this planning is kept. Possible problems should be eliminated before production starts and if unexpected disturbances occur in the actual production the right measures should be taken. Due to the dynamic nature of the production process, the continuous variation in products and the complexity of both, all this can hardly be achieved with conventional static planning and analysis systems. Simulation provides a solution here, since this enables the modelling and evaluation of the dynamic relations between product and production process. After a global introduction to production simulation in general and the application of simulation at the Flensburger shipyard, this paper presents a tool that has been developed to simulate the various complex assembly processes taking place at shipyards. Subsequently the simulation model for the subassembly production at Flensburger, in which this tool is applied, will be discussed.

Even though the impact of manufacturing quality to reliability is not considered much as well as that of design area, a major cause of an early failure of the product is known as manufacturing problem. This research applies two different types of neural network algorithms, the Back propagation (BP) algorithm and Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ) algorithm, to identify and classify the nonrandom variation pattern on the control chart based on knowledge-based diagnosis of dimensional variation. The performance and efficiency of both algorithms are evaluated to choose the better pattern recognition system for auto body assembly process. To analyze hundred percent of the data obtained by Optical Coordinate Measurement Machine (OCMM), this research considers an application in which individual observations rather than subsample means are used. A case study for analysis of OCMM data in underbody assembly process is presented to demonstrate the proposed knowledge-based pattern recognition system.
