In electric agricultural machine a reduction gear is needed to convert the high speed rotation motion generated by DC motor to lower speed rotation motion used by the vehicle. The reduction gear consists of several spur gears. Spur gears are the most easily visualized gears that transmit motion between two parallel shafts and easy to produce. The modelling and simulation of spur gears in DC motor reduction gear is important to predict the actual motion behaviour. A pair of spur gear tooth in action is generally subjected to two types of cyclic stress: contact stress and bending stress. The stress may not attain their maximum values at the same point of contact fatigue. These types of failure can be minimized by analysis of the problem during the design stage and creating proper tooth surface profile with proper manufacturing methods. To improve its life expectation in this study modal and stress analysis of reduction gear is simulated using ANSYS workbench based on finite element method (FEM). The modal analysis was done to understand reduction gear deformation behaviour when vibration occurs. FEM static stress analysis is also simulated on reduction gear to simulate the gear teeth bending stress and contact stress behaviour.

Operating test of power-transmission plastic spur gears were performed inspecting both characteristics of friction-wear and endurance, and suggesting endurance improvement method that either drills internal holes of tooth or inserts metallic pin in the internal hole of tooth and verifying this newly-provided method. In case of acetal gears, amount of friction-wear is observed to increase by development of plastic deformation and increase of tooth stiffness due to brittle material property of acetal. To the contrary, in case of nylon gears, suggested method is shown to drop down the tooth temperature for about 3∼10$^{\circ}C$ than original gear, thus amount of wear is reduced by over 30% and operating lift prolonged by more than 200%. Hence, suggested method is proved to be practically applicable to the plastic gears made by soft polymers such as Nylon.
Extrusion process in the bulk material for fabrication of miniature helical gears has problems such as a high forming load and short tool life because the cross-section is complex and asymmetry. To overcome these problems, in this study, miniature helical gears were fabricated by Zn-22Al powder hot extrusion. The included die angle for minimum extrusion load and improving die filling was determined by FE-simulation. The Zn-22Al spheroidal powder produced by gasatomization were compacted and sintered for extrusion experiment. The dimension of helical-gear is 0.3mm in module, 3.35mm in pitch diameter, $15^{\circ}$ in helix angle and the number of teeth is 12. All of the extrusion experiments were performed with internal helical gear die which was machined by precision electric discharge machining using the electrode. The experiment was conducted at $190^{\circ}C$ to $310^{\circ}C$ to obtain extrusive and mechanical properties. The extruded helical gears were analyzed through extrusion load, Vickers hardness and SEM images for each extrusion temperature. The powder hot extrusion process was successfully applied to fabricate a miniature helical gear.

To enhance the strength of gears for transmission, Generally caburizing heat treatment is applied. But there are some problems in this technology the distortion of gears during heat treatment process, and the discontinuity of manufacturing process. For these reasons, the high frequency induction hardening process is widely used. This method is one of the surface hardening process to improve the wear resistance and fatigue life of the machine components. In this study, to compare the bending fatigue strength of caburized gear with that of induction hardened gear, bending fatigue testing of gears with two different cases was performed by using an electrohydraulic servo-controlled fatigue testing machine and double tooth bending fatigue test fixture. Fatigue life distributions at constant stress levels were established directly from fatigue data. For gear design, the fatigue strength distribution at specified life is more important. This distribution is obtained by statical transformation from fatigue life distribution. Reliability of bending fatigue strength was estimated by P-S-N curves and Weibull distribution.
Although high productivity is possible, cold forged helical gears have not been widely used due to difficulty in achieving mechanical properties as well as dimensional accuracy of the product. Confidence in the gear characteristics also is very important in heavy-duty gear applications. Therefore, the properties of forged gears must be compared to the properties of conventional machined gears. The properties might be different due to the different fabrication processes. In this study, machined and forged products both before and after heat-treated have been compared by measuring the residual stress and involute curve of the tooth. Characteristics of hardness and microstructure were also compared. Additionally, tooth fracture strength was compared for the heat-treated products. Moreover, the tooth strength and the fracture pattern were compared between the machined and forged gears. The forged gear showed decreased changes in residual stress and decreased changes in dimensions when compared to the machined gear before and after heat treatment. The forged gear was over 10% better than the machined gear in tooth strength.

The vibration and noise of gears is due to the vibration exciting force caused by the tooth stiffness which changes periodically as the mesh of teeth proceeds and by the transmission error, that is, the rotation delay between driving gear and driven gear caused by manufacturing error and alignment error in assembly and so on. The purpose of this study is to develop how to calculate simultaneously the optimum amounts of tooth profile modification, end relief and crowning by minimizing the vibration exciting force of helical gears. We estimate the vibration exciting force by the mesh analysis of gears. The constraints of this problem consist of contact ratio and strengths of gear teeth such as tooth fillet stress, surface durability and scoring. ADS(Automated Design Synthesis) is used as an optimization tool. And, since the aspect ratio is an important parameter of tooth modification, we investigate the relation between it and the optimum values of tooth modification. The proposed method can calculate the optimum amount of tooth modification automatically and is to be utilized to resolve the problem of vibration of helical gears.
The differential planetary gear reducer as a main component of the concrete mixer driving mechanism requires a strong torque to mix concrete compounds. As this component is currently dependent on imports, it is necessary to develop it by conducting a study on vibration analysis and the resonance problem. The noise and vibration of a concrete mixer reducer increase owing to the transmission error of planetary gears, and the damage of components occurs owing to the problems in design and production. In this study, the tooth-passing frequency is calculated to evaluate the noise and vibration of a mixer reducer, and a fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis is conducted through a vibration test using an acceleration sensor. The vibration of the reducer is measured at three points of input and output of the shaft and planetary gear housing with fixed and variable revolutions per minute. The operating conditions of gears and bearings are evaluated by performing the FFT analysis, and the resonance problem is verified. The results show that No. 1 pinion and ring gears revolve disproportionately. The amplitude values appear high, and the wear of tooth faces occur in tooth-passing frequencies and harmonic components of No. 1 and No. 2 pinion-ring gears. Therefore, we conclude that design changes in the reducer and a correction of tooth profiles are required.
A 1.7-ton grade small excavator is a construction equipment that can perform various functions in limited spaces where heavy equipment cannot enter easily. Owing to the recent acceleration of urbanization, it has been used increasingly in drainage and gas pipes, as well as for road repair works in urban areas. The power train of a traveling reducer for a 1.7-ton grade small excavator utilizes a complex planetary gear system. Complex planetary gears are vital to the power train of a traveling reducer as it mitigates the fatigue strength problem. In the present study, the specifications of a complex planetary gear train are calculated; furthermore, the gear bending and compressive stresses of the complex planetary gears are analyzed to achieve an optimal design of the latter in terms of cost and reliability. In this study, the actual gear bending and compressive stresses of a planetary gear system are analyzed using a self-developed gear design program based on the Lewes and Hertz equation. Subsequently, the calculated specifications of the complex planetary gears are verified by evaluating the results with the data of allowable bending and compressive stress based on curves of stress vs. number of cycles of the gears.

Rating systems of bevel gears(straight, spiral, and zerol bevel gears) which are commonly used as power transmission devices for non-papallel axes are developed on the personal computer, which analyze and/or evaluate the gear design and the service performance at the point of view of strength and durability. The typical considerations of the ratings are the bending strength, the surface durability, and the scoring resistance. The ratings are carried out using the reliable standards of AGMA & Gleason Works. Therefore, the system is built so that the variables or factors considered differently in those standards and the strength, dura- bility, and scoring partially in Gleason are appraised seperately by each method, and a series of the estimation processes is integrated into the system so as to compare each result. The developed rating systems can be used in the initial stage of gear design process, and also a better design can be performed by the evaluation of the initial design at the view point of gear strength and durability. Additionally, it is useful for the trouble-shooting of bevel gear system and to the purpose of introducing the methods for maintaining design strength in service, with appraising the gear strength after design or with appraising the influencing factor as a whole. Therefore, this rating systems can help the aim of design automation of bevel gears.
The composite planetary gear reducer, a power transmission component of armored vehicles, operates at a high torque and is used in severe environments such as mountain, gravel or unpaved roads. Therefore, they must be designed and manufactured to have high durability. To design such a planetary gear reducer, there are numerous specifications to validate, such as selecting the module and the number of teeth of each gear satisfied the requirements, and calculating gear specifications and durability strength. Because planetary gears constitute a combination of several gears, there are many restrictions and interferences in selecting the number of teeth and addendum modification coefficients, and designing the tooth shape. Developing an auto design program is necessary to design various planetary gears more conveniently and quickly. In this study, a planetary gear reducer design software, widely used in various machines and armored vehicles, was developed. This design software can automatically select the number of teeth and modules of the gears, calculate specifications and quickly evaluate its fatigue durability strength and scoring failure according to the planetary gear reducer design theory.
