  • This paper proposes a new concept of a soft and wearable upper-limb exoskeleton. A novel actuation principle, called the twisted string actuation principle, is implemented to make it lightweight, soft, and therefore easily wearable. Its power transmission mechanism and harness are designed to be soft and wearable, yet have enough control accuracy for rehabilitation. In addition to force transmission optimization, a speed enlargement mechanism is newly introduced in order to increase the contraction speed of the twisted string actuation mechanism by sacrificing the unnecessarily large gear reduction ratio of the twisted string mechanism. A prototype has been tested for mirroring therapy, and the feasibility of the proposed mechanism has been shown through a sufficiently accurate tracking performance.

  • In this paper, landing stability evaluation of lunar lander considering various landing conditions was performed. The status of landing stability of the lunar lander is classified into stable landing, conditionally stable landing due to sliding and unstable landing due to tip-over. In particular, the quasi-static tip-over equation was rearranged considering the phenomena of lowering the center of gravity and extension of foot-pad interval of the landing gear. These results were compared by finite element model analysis results using a commercial software ABAQUS and its validity and accuracy were verified. The verified finite element model was used for examining the tendency of various environmental variables such as landing conditions, friction coefficient, lateral speed and slope of ground.

  • This study aims to investigate effects of the length of the buoy and sand bag line on the loss of webfoot octopus pot. A numerical modeling and simulation was carried out to analyze the process that the pot gear affected by wave using the mass spring model. Through the simulation, tensions of sand bag line under various condition were investigated by length of buoy and sand bag line. The drag force and coefficient k of an artificial shell used in the webfoot octopus pot was obtained from an experiment in a circular water channel, and the coefficient k was applied to the simulation. To verify the accuracy of the simulation model, a simple test was conducted into measuring a rope tension of a hanging shell under flow. Then, the test result was compared with the simulation. The lengths of the buoy line in the simulation were 1.12, 1.41, 1.80, 2.23, 2.69, and 3.17 times of water depth. The lengths of sand bag line were 10, 20, 30, and 40 meters, and conditions of water depth were 8, 15, 22 meters. 4 meter height and 8 second period of wave were applied to all simulations. As a results, the tension of the sand bag line was decreased as the buoy and sand bag line were increased. The minimum tension of the sand bag line was appeared in conditions that the length of the buoy line is twice of water depth and the sand bag line length is over 40 meters (except in case of depth 8 meters.).

  • There have been many solar tracking systems developed for the high accuracy in solar tracking. One of the key components of any motion control system is software. LabVIEW offers an ideal combination of flexibility, ease-of-use and well-integration with other I/O pieces for developing solar tracking system. Real-time solar positions which vary with GPS's data are used simultaneously to control the solar tracker by a chain of operating modes between the open and closed loops. This paper introduces a step by step procedure for the fabrication and performance assessment of a precision solar tracking system. The system developed in this study consists of motion controllers, motor drives, step-motors, feedback devices and application. CRD sensors are applied for the solar tracking system which play a primary role in poor conditions for tracking due to a gear backlash and a strong wind. Mini-dish was used as a concentrator for collecting sun light. The solar position data, in terms of azimuth and elevation, sunrise and sunset times was compared with those of KASI(Korea Astronomy & Space Science Institute). The results presented in this paper demonstrate the accuracy of the present system in solar tracking and utilization.

  • A coelostat is often used for solar observations, because it corrects the image rotation automatically by guiding sunlight into a fixed telescope with two plane mirrors. For the purposes of education and spectroscopic observation, the solar group at Seoul National University (SNU) plans to develop the SNU coelostat (SNUC) and install it in the SNU Astronomical Observatory (SAO). Requirements of the SNUC are < 1" positioning accuracy with 30 cm beam size on the entrance pupil in the compact dome. To allow for installation in the small dome, we design a compact slope type coelostat with a 45 cm primary plane mirror and a 39 cm secondary plane mirror. The motion of the SNUC is minimized by fixing the position of the slope frame. Numerical simulations of the available observational time of the designed coelostat shows that the sun can be observed ay all times from June to early August and at least three hours in other months. Since the high accuracy driving motors installed in the SNUC can be affected by external environment factors such as humidity and temperature variations, we design a prototype to test the significance of these effects. The prototype consists of a 20 cm primary plane mirror, a 1 m slope rail, a direct drive motor, a ballscrew, a linear motion guide, an AC servo motor, a reduction gear and a linear encoder. We plan to control and test the accuracy of the prototype with varying atmospheric conditions in early 2019. After testing the prototype, the SNUC will be manufactured and installed in SAO by 2020.

  • The Fuel-cut driving is started when the acceleration pedal released with transmission gear engaged. Fuel economy of the vehicle improves by active fuel-cut driving. A deep-learning technique is proposed to predict fuel-cut driving with vehicle speed, acceleration and road gradient data in the study. It's 3~10 of hidden layers and 10~20 of variables and is applied to the 9600 data obtained in the test driving of a vehicle in the road of 12km. Its accuracy is about 84.5% with 10 variables, 7 hidden layers and Relu as activation function. Its error is regarded from the fact that the change rate of input data is higher than the rate of fuel consumption data. Therefore the accuracy can be better by the normalizing process of input data. It's unnecessary to get the signal of vehicle injector or OBD, and a deep-learning technique applied to the data to be got easily, like GPS. It can contribute to eco-drive for the computing time small.

  • The under-drive brake piston is an important component in automotive transmissions. It changes the velocity by controlling the gear ratio. It has been traditionally manufactured by hot forging. Recently, there has been an effort to replace this traditional manufacturing method with cold forging in order to improve the dimensional accuracy and decrease the surface roughness. Cold forging uses a smaller amount of initial material and also has a shorter cycle time since the forged surface can be the final surface without the need of post-processing such as machining or grinding. In the current study, finite element analysis was conducted to evaluate a process design using an initial plate with reduced thickness. This smaller thickness decreases the amount of material needed for the part as well as the machining to produce the final product.

  • A barrel cam is used as a very important part of an index drive unit. The index drive unit must have an intermittent-rotational motion. The barrel typed cam and roller gear mechanism has the advantages of high reliability to perform a prescribed motion of a follower. This paper proposes a new method for the shape design of the barrel cam and also a CAD program is developed by using the proposed method. As defined in this paper, the relative velocity method for the shape design calculates the relative velocity of the follower versus cam at a center of roller, and then determines a contact point by using the geometric relationships and the kinematic constraints, where the direction of the relative velocity must be parallel to a common tangential line at the contact point of two independent bodies, i.e. the cam and the follower Then, the shape of the cam is defined by the coordinate transformation of the trace of the contact points. This paper presents two examples for the shape design of the barrel cam in order to prove the accuracy of the proposed methods.

  • There have been many developed systems for harnessing the solar energy such as solar water heaters, solar thermal power systems, PV systems, daylighting and solar hydrogen systems. all of them are capable of reducing $CO_2$ emission. However, the efficiency of those systems which work without a solar tracker is lower. This paper is a step by step procedure for fabrication and a performance test of a solar tracking system. The system developed in this study consists of motion controllers, motor drives, step-motors, feedback devices and application. CdS sensors are introduced into the solar tracking system for playing a primary role in poor conditions for tracking due to a gear backlash and a strong wind. Mini-dish was used as a concentrator for collecting sun light. The results presented in this article provide the high accuracy of the present system in solar tracking and indicate a potential for energy savings.
