Webcam-Based 2D Eye Gaze Estimation System By Means of Binary Deformable Eyeball Templates

  • Eye gaze as a form of input was primarily developed for users who are unable to use usual interaction devices such as keyboard and the mouse; however, with the increasing accuracy in eye gaze detection with decreasing cost of development, it tends to be a practical interaction method for able-bodied users in soon future as well. This paper explores a low-cost, robust, rotation and illumination independent eye gaze system for gaze enhanced user interfaces. We introduce two brand-new algorithms for fast and sub-pixel precise pupil center detection and 2D Eye Gaze estimation by means of deformable template matching methodology. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm based on the deformable angular integral search algorithm based on minimum intensity value to localize eyeball (iris outer boundary) in gray scale eye region images. Basically, it finds the center of the pupil in order to use it in our second proposed algorithm which is about 2D eye gaze tracking. First, we detect the eye regions by means of Intel OpenCV AdaBoost Haar cascade classifiers and assign the approximate size of eyeball depending on the eye region size. Secondly, using DAISMI (Deformable Angular Integral Search by Minimum Intensity) algorithm, pupil center is detected. Then, by using the percentage of black pixels over eyeball circle area, we convert the image into binary (Black and white color) for being used in the next part: DTBGE (Deformable Template based 2D Gaze Estimation) algorithm. Finally, using DTBGE algorithm, initial pupil center coordinates are assigned and DTBGE creates new pupil center coordinates and estimates the final gaze directions and eyeball size. We have performed extensive experiments and achieved very encouraging results. Finally, we discuss the effectiveness of the proposed method through several experimental results.

착용형 양안 시선추적기와 기계학습을 이용한 시선 초점 거리 추정방법 평가 (Evaluation of Gaze Depth Estimation using a Wearable Binocular Eye tracker and Machine Learning)

  • 본 논문은 가상현실 및 증강현실을 위해 양안식 눈추적기 기반의 시선 깊이 추정 기법을 제안한다. 제안한 방법은 먼저 양안식 눈추적기로부터 안구 및 시선과 관련된 다양한 정보를 획득한다. 이후 획득된 정보를 바탕으로 다층퍼셉트론 알고리즘 기반의 시선 추적과 인식 모델을 통해 눈 시선 깊이를 추정한다. 제안한 방법을 검증하기 위해 13명의 참여자를 모집하고 개인별 시선 추적과 범용 시선 추적에 대한 성능을 분석하였다. 실험결과 개인별 모델에서는 90.1%, 그리고 전체 사용자를 대상으로 한 범용 모델에서는 89.7%의 정확도를 보였다.

  • Computers are the most common tool when using the Internet and utilizing a mouse to select and execute objects. Eye tracking technology is welcomed as an alternative technology to help control computers for users who cannot use their hands due to their disabilities. However, the pointer execution method of the existing eye tracking technique causes many malfunctions. Therefore, in this paper, we developed a gaze tracking interface that combines voice commands to solve the malfunction problem when the upper limb disabled uses the existing gaze tracking technology to execute computer menus and objects. Usability verification was conducted through comparative experiments regarding the improvements of the malfunction. The upper limb disabled who are hand-impaired use eye tracking technology to move the pointer and utilize the voice commands, such as, "okay" while browsing the computer screen for instant clicks. As a result of the comparative experiments on the reduction of the malfunction of pointer execution with the existing gaze interfaces, we verified that our system, Eye-Voice, reduced the malfunction rate of pointer execution and is effective for the upper limb disabled to use.

  • Eye tracking research for upper limb disabilities is showing an effect in the aspect of device control. However, the reality is that it is not enough to perform web interaction with only eye tracking technology. In the Eye-Voice interface, a previous study, in order to solve the problem that the existing gaze tracking interfaces cause a malfunction of pointer execution, a gaze tracking interface supplemented with a voice command was proposed. In addition, the reduction of the malfunction rate of the pointer was confirmed through a comparison experiment with the existing interface. In this process, the difficulty of pointing due to the small size of the execution object in the web environment was identified as another important problem of malfunction. In this study, we propose an auto-magnification interface of objects so that people with upper extremities can freely click web contents by improving the problem that it was difficult to point and execute due to the high density of execution objects and their arrangements in web pages.

A Human-Robot Interface Using Eye-Gaze Tracking System for People with Motor Disabilities

  • Recently, service area has been emerging field f robotic applications. Even though assistant robots play an important role for the disabled and the elderly, they still suffer from operating the robots using conventional interface devices such as joysticks or keyboards. In this paper we propose an efficient computer interface using real-time eye-gaze tracking system. The inputs to the proposed system are images taken by a camera and data from a magnetic sensor. The measured data is sufficient to describe the eye and head movement because the camera and the receiver of a magnetic sensor are stationary with respect to the head. So the proposed system can obtain the eye-gaze direction in spite of head movement as long as the distance between the system and the transmitter of a magnetic position sensor is within 2m. Experimental results show the validity of the proposed system in practical aspect and also verify the feasibility of the system as a new computer interface for the disabled.

시선 추적을 활용한 패션 디자인 인지에 관한 연구 (A Study on Fashion Design Cognition Using Eye Tracking)

  • This study investigated the cognitive process of fashion design images through eye activity tracking. Differences in the cognitive process and gaze activity according to image elements were confirmed. The results of the study are as follows. First, a difference was found between groups in the gaze time for each section according to the model and design. Although model diversity is an important factor leading the interest of observers, the simplicity of the model was deemed more effective for observing the design. Second, the examination of the differences by segments regarding the gaze weight of the image area showed differences for each group. When a similar type of model is repeated, the proportion of face recognition decreases, and the proportion of design recognition time increases. Conversely, when the model diversity is high, the same amount of time is devoted to recognizing the model's face in all the processes. Additionally, there was a difference in the gaze activity in recognizing the same design according to the type of model. These results enabled the confirmation of the importance of the model as an image recognition factor in fashion design. In the fashion industry, it is important to find a cognitive factor that attracts and retains consumers' attention. If the design recognition effect is further maximized by finding service points to be utilized, the brand's sustainability is expected to be enhanced even in the rapidly changing fashion industry.

Gaze Differences between Expert and Novice Teachers in Science Classes

  • This study aims to investigate the gaze patterns of two expert and two novice teachers in one hour of lecture type class. Teachers recruited from the same middle school conducted the class each, wearing an eye-tracker. Gaze rate and gaze movement pattern were analyzed. The scene where teachers faced in the classroom was categorized into three zones; student zone, material zone, and non-teaching zone. Student zone was divided into nine areas of interest to see the gaze distribution within the student zone. Expert teachers showed focused gaze on student zone while novice teachers' gaze rate was significantly higher at the non-teaching zone, compared to expert teachers' one. Within student zone, expert teachers' gaze spread to the rear areas, but novice teachers' one was narrowly resided in the middle areas of the student zone. This difference in gaze caused different eye movement pattern: experts' T pattern and novices' I pattern. On the other hand, both teacher groups showed the least gaze rate onto the left and right front areas. Which change is required to teachers' gaze behavior and what must be considered in order to make effective teacher gaze in the classroom setting were discussed.

  • 카메라의 시선을 조정하기 위해서는 비전 시스템의 시스템 파라미터를 사용해야 한다. 하지만 이러한 시스템 파라미터는 측정 당시와 사용중이 달라 질 수 있다. 이 경우 원하는 카메라의 시선 조정이 이루어지기 어렵다. 이 문제를 보완하기 위한 방법으로서 본 연구에서는 LMI(Linear Matrix Inequality)에 기반한 비전 시스템의 시스템 파라미터의 변화에 강건한 시선 고정 방법을 제안한다. 시뮬레이션 검증 결과는 제안하는 방법이 기존의 선형 알고리즘에 비해 더 적은 시선 추적 에러를 보이고, 기존의 비선형 알고리즘에 비해 더 안정적인 시선 추적 에러를 보인다. 또한 제안하는 방법은 속도가 빨라서 실시간 사용이 가능하다.

사용자 응시지점 정보기반 시선 추적 시스템 신뢰도 측정 기법 (Reliability Measurement Technique of The Eye Tracking System Using Gaze Point Information)

  • 본 논문에서는 사용자 시선 추적에 사용되는 시선 추적기의 정확도 향상 및 이를 분석하는 방법을 제안한다. 제안하는 방법에서는 시선 좌표와 색 정보를 추출하여 정확한 동공 정보를 기반으로 만들어진 사용자 profile 정보를 추출한 후 이를 기반으로 시선 추적기가 부착된 디스플레이에서 고르게 높은 정확도를 유지 하도록 한다. 이 때 사용자 profile 정보 추출 시 응시 시간에 따른 정확도의 변화 또한 추정하여 최적의 파라미터 값을 추출한다. 시선 추적의 정확도에 대한 실험 결과 짧은 시간으로 특정지점을 응시할 경우 시선 추적의 정확도가 낮게 측정되지만, 응시 시간을 2초 이상의 유지 시 80% 이상의 높은 시선 추적 정확도가 측정됨을 알 수 있었다.
