  • In this paper, a smoke detection algorithm robust to brightness and color variations depending on time and weather is proposed. The proposed smoke detection algorithm specifies the candidate region using difference images of input and background images, determines smoke by comparing feature coefficients of Gaussian mixture model of difference images. Thresholds for specifying candidate region is divided by four levels according to average brightness and chrominance of input images. Clusters of Gaussian mixture models of difference images are aligned according to average brightness. Smoke is determined by comparing distance of Gaussian mixture model parameters. The proposed algorithm is implemented by media dedicated DSP. As results of experiments, it is shown that the proposed algorithm is effective to detect smoke with camera installed outdoor.

  • In this paper, a fire detection algorithm based on video processing is proposed. At the first stage, background image extracted from CCTV video input signal, and then foreground image were separated by differencing CCTV input signal from background image. At the second stage, candidated area were extracted by using color information from foreground image. At the final stage, smoke or flame characteristic area were separated by using Gaussian mixture modeling applied to candidated area, and then fire can be detected. Through real experiments at the inner room, it is shown that the proposed system works well.

  • In general, wavelet coefficients are composed of a few large coefficients and a lot of small coefficients. In this paper, we propose image denoising algorithm using Bernoulli-Gaussian mixture model based on sparse characteristic of wavelet coefficient. The Bernoulli-Gaussian mixture is composed of the multiplication of Bernoulli random variable and Gaussian mixture random variable. The image denoising is performed by using Bayesian estimation. We present an effective denoising method through simplified parameter estimation for Bernoulli random variable using local expected squared error. Simulation results show our method outperforms the states-of-art denoising methods when using orthogonal wavelets.

  • In this paper, a vehicle detection algorithm with HD CCTV camera images using GMM(Gaussian Mixture Model) algorithm and mathematical morphological processing is proposed. At the first stage, background could be estimated using GMM from CCTV input image signal and then object could be separated from difference image of the input image and background image. At the second stage, candidated object were reformed by using mathematical morphological processing. Finally, vehicle object could be detected using vehicle size informations depend on distance and vehicle type in tunnel. Through real experiments in tunnel, it is shown that the proposed system works well.

  • A diffusion model of radioactive liquid effluents is developed and applied for YGN NPP's site, based on the Gaussian plume type model. Due to the complexity of oceanic diffusion characteristics of YGN site, a simple and reliable statistical model based on Reg. Guide 1.113 is developed. Also, a computer code package to calculate dilution factors as a function of plant operation conditions and pathway of radioactive materials. A liquid effluents diffusion model is developed by dividing the diffusion range into two categories, i. e, a near field mixing region and a far field mixing region. In the near field, the initial mixing is affected by a buoyance force, a high initial turbulence and momentum which is characterized by a plant operation condition and environmental conditions. The far field mixing is similar to gaseous effluents diffusion. So, beyond the near field region, wellknown Gaussian plume model was adopted. A different area averages of Gaussian plume equation was taken for each radioactive exposure pathway. As a result, we can get different dilution factors for different pathways. Results shows that present dilution factors used for YGN ODCM is too much overestimated compared with dilution factors calculated with the developed model.

  • Vision-based navigation of unmaned aerial vehicle is a significant technology that can reinforce the vulnerability of the widely used GPS/INS integrated navigation system. However, the existing image matching algorithms are not suitable for matching the aerial image with the database. For the reason, this paper proposes particle filters using Gaussian mixture models to deal with matching between aerial image and database for vision-based navigation. The particle filters estimate the position of the aircraft by comparing the correspondences of aerial image and database under the assumption of Gaussian mixture model. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation is presented to demonstrate performance of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents a chamber pressure model development of K2 rifle by applying Gaussian mixture model. In order to materialize a real recoil force of a virtual reality shooting rifle in military combat training, the chamber pressure which is one of major components of the recoil force needs to be investigated and modeled. Over 200,000 data of the chamber pressure were collected by implementing live fire experiments with both K100 and M193 of 5.56 mm bullets. Gaussian mixture method was also applied to create a mathematical model that satisfies nonlinear, asymmetry, and deviations of the chamber pressure which is caused by irregular characteristics of propellant combustion. In addition, Polynomial and Fourier Regression were used for comparison of results, and the sum of squared errors, the coefficient of determination and root-mean-square errors were analyzed for performance measurement.

  • In this paper, a hardware implementation of MOD(Moving Object Detection) algorithm is described, which is based GMM(Gaussian Mixture Model) and background subtraction. The EGML(Effective Gaussian Mixture Learning) is used to model and update background. Some approximations of EGML calculations are applied to reduce hardware complexity, and pipelining technique is used to improve operating speed. Gaussian parameters are adjustable according to various environment conditions to achieve better MOD performance. MOD processor is verified by using FPGA-in-the-loop verification, and it can operate with 109 MHz clock frequency on XC5VSX95T FPGA device.

  • For the detection of moving objects, background subtraction methods are widely used. In case the background has variation, we need to update the background in real-time for the reliable detection of foreground objects. Gaussian mixture model (GMM) combined with probabilistic learning is one of the most popular methods for the real-time update of the background. However, it does not work well in the complex and dynamic backgrounds with high traffic regions. In this paper, we propose a new method for modelling and updating more reliably the complex and dynamic backgrounds based on the probabilistic learning and the layered processing.
