  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the structural capacity of steel pipe pile specimens reinforced with hollow steel plate shear connectors by pull-out test. Compressive strength testing of concrete was conducted and yield forces, tensile strengths and elongation ratios of re-bars and hollow steel plate were investigated. A 2,000kN capacity UTM was used for the pull-out test with 0.01mm/sec velocity by displacement control method. Strain gauges were installed at the center of re-bars and hollow steel plates and LVDTs were also installed to measure the relative displacement between the loading plate and in-filled concrete pile specimens. The yield forces of the steel pipe pile specimens reinforced with hollow steel plate shear connectors were increased 1.44-fold and 1.53-fold compared to that of a control specimen, respectively. Limited state forces of steel pipe pile specimens reinforced with hollow steel plate shear connectors were increased 1.23-fold and 1.29-fold compared to that of a control specimen, respectively. Yield state displacement and limited state displacement of steel pipe pile specimens reinforced with hollow steel plate shear connector were decreased 0.61-fold and 0.42-fold compared to that of a control specimen, respectively.

  • The tsunami from the megathrust earthquake magnitude 9.3 on 26 December 2004 is the largest tsunami the world has known in over forty years. This tsunami destructively attacked 13 countries around Indian Ocean with at least 230,000 fatalities, displaced people 2,089,883 and 1.5 million people who lost their livelihoods. The ratio of women and children killed to men is 3 to 1. The total damage costs US$ 10.73 billion and rebuilding costs US$ 10.375 billion. The tsunami's death toll could have been drastically reduced, if the warning was disseminated quickly and effectively to the coastal dwellers along the Indian Ocean rim. With a warning system in Indian Ocean similar to that operating in the Pacific Ocean since 1965, it would have been possible to warn, evacuate and save countless lives. The best tribute we can pay to all who perished or suffered in this disaster is to heed its powerful lessons. UNESCO/IOC have put their tremendous effort on better disaster preparedness, functional early warning systems and realistic arrangements to cope with tsunami disaster. They organized ICG/IOTWS (Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System) and the third of this meeting is held in Bali, Indonesia during $31^{st}$ July to $4^{th}$ August 2006. A US$ 53 million interim warning system using tidal gauges and undersea sensors is nearing completion in the Indian Ocean with the assistance from IOC. The tsunami warning depends strictly on an early detection of a tsunami (wave) perturbation in the ocean itself. It does not and cannot depend on seismological information alone. In the case of 26 December 2004 tsunami when the NOAA/PMEL DART (Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami) system has not been deployed, the initialized input of sea surface perturbation for the MOST (Method Of Splitting Tsunami) model was from the tsunamigenic-earthquake source model. It is the first time that the satellite altimeters can detect the signal of tsunami wave in the Bay of Bengal and was used to validate the output from the MOST model in the deep ocean. In the case of Thailand, the inundation part of the MOST model was run from Sumatra 2004 for inundation mapping purposes. The medium and high resolution satellite data were used to assess the degree of the damage from Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 with NDVI classification at 6 provinces on the Andaman seacoast of Thailand. With the tide-gauge station data, run-up surveys, bathymetry and coastal topography data and land-use classification from satellite imageries, we can use these information for coastal zone management on evacuation plan and construction code.

  • Residential differentiation is an academic theme which has been given enormous attention in urban studies. This is due to the fact that residential segregation can be seen as one of the best indicators for socio-spatial dialectics occurring on urban space. Measuring how one population group is differentiated from the other group in terms of residential space has been a focal point in the residential segregation studies. The index of dissimilarity has been the most extensively used one. Despite its popularity, however, it has been accused of inability to capture the degree of spatial clustering that unevenly distributed population groups usually display. Further, the spatial indices of segregation which have been introduced to edify the problems of the index of dissimilarity also have some drawbacks: significance testing methods have never been provided; recent advances in spatial statistics have not been extensively exploited. Thus, the main purpose of the research is to devise a spatial separation measure which is expected to gauge not only how unevenly two population groups are distributed over urban space, but also how much the uneven distributions are spatially clustered (spatial dependence). The main results are as follows. First, a new measure is developed by integrating spatial association measures and spatial chi-square statistics. A significance testing method based on the generalized randomization test is also provided. Second, a case study of residential differentiation among groups by educational attainment in major Korean metropolitan cities clearly shows the applicability of the analytical framework presented in the paper.

  • According to the report of hydrologic modeling study, from a quantitative point of view, a lumped model is more efficient than a distributed model. A distributed model has to simplify geospatial characteristics for the shake of restricted application on computer calculation and field observation. In this reason, a distributed model can not help having some errors of water quantity modelling. However, considering a distribution of rainfall-runoff reflected spatial characteristics, a distributed model is more efficient to simulate a flow of surface water, The purpose of this study is modeling of spatial rainfall-runoff of surface water using grid based distributed model, which is consisted of storage function model and essential basin-channel parameters( slope, flow direction & accumulation), and that procedure is able to be executed at a personal computer. The prototype of this model is developed in Heongseong Multipunose Dam basin and adapted in Hapchon Multipurpose Dam basin, which is larger than the former about five times. The efficiency coefficients in result of two dam basin simulations are more than about 0.9, but ones at the upstream water level gauge station meet with bad result owing to overestimated rating curves in high water level. As a result of this study, it is easily implemented that spatially distributed rainfall-runoff model using GIS, and geophysical characteristics of the catchment, hereafter it is anticipated that this model is easily able to apply rainfall data by real time.

  • Tidal computations of $M_2,\;S_2,\; K_1$ and $O_1$ constituents in the northeast Asian sea are presented by blending the Topex/Poseidon (T/P) altimeter data into a hydrodynamic model with $5'{\times}5'$ resolution. A series of sensitivity experiments on a weighting factor, which is the control parameter in the blending method, are carried out using $M_2$ constituent. The weighting factor is set to be in inverse proportion to the square root of water depth to reduce noises which could occur in data-assimilative model by blending T/P data. Model results obtained by blending the T/P-derived $M_2,\;S_2,\; K_1$ and $O_1$ constituents simultaneously are compared with all T/P-track tidal data; Average values of amplitude and phase errors are close to zero. Standard deviations of amplitude and phase errors are approximately 2 cm and less than 10 degrees respectively. The data-assimilative model results show a quite good agreement with T/P-derived tidal data, particularly in shallow water region (h<250m). In deep water regions, T/P-derived tidal data show unreasonable spatial variations in amplitude and phase. The data-assimilative model results differ from T/P-derived data, but are improved to show reasonable spatial variations in amplitude and phase. In addition, the T/P-blended model results are in good agreement with coastal tide gauge data which are not blended into the model.

  • In the modern semiconductor industry, lithography process is used to construct specific patterns. However, due to the decreasing of line width, these days, more and more researchers are interested in PMMA(Poly Methyl Methacrylate) lithography by using e-beam instead of the prior method, PR(Photoresist) lithography by using UV(Ultra-Violet). Additionally, the patterns constructed by lithography are collapsed during the process of cleansing remnants and the resistance against the breakdown of the patterns is known to be proportional to the elastic modulus of pattern-constructing materials. In this research, we measured the change of hardness and elastic modulus of PMMA film surface according to the change of time spent to soft-bake the PMMA film. During the measurement, we controlled the tip pressure from $25{\mu}N$ to $8,500{\mu}N$ having intervals that are $134.52{\mu}N$. For these measurements, we used the Triboindenter from Hysitron to gauge the hardness and elastic modulus and the tip we used was Berkovich diamond Tip.

  • In this paper, we have constructed high-resolution topographical map of macro-tidal Malipo beach through integration of terrestrial LiDAR measurement and MBES survey data at inter-tidal zone. To acquire the enough information of inter-tidal zone, we have done terrestrial LiDAR measurement mounted on the roof of vehicle with DGPS through go-stop-scan method at the ebb tide and MBES depth surveying with tide gauge and eye staff measurement for tide correction and MSL calculation at the high tide all together. To integrate two kinds of data, we have unified the vertical coordination standard to Incheon MSL. The mean error of overlapped inter-tidal zone is about 2~6 cm. To verify the accuracy of terrestrial LiDAR, RTK-DGPS measurement have done simultaneously and the difference of Z value RMSE is about 4~7 cm. The resolution of Malipo topographical map is 50 cm and it has constructed to DEM (Digital Elevation Model) based on GIS. Now it has used as an input topography information for the storm-surge inundation prediction models. Also it will be possible to use monitoring of beach process through the long-term periodic measurement and GIS-based 3D spatial analysis calculating the erosion and deposition considering with the artificial beach transition and coastal environmental parameters.

  • The refraction expansion joints have been newly developed by complementing the problems of shock, noise, replaceability, displacement in the direction perpendicular to bridge, vertical difference, which are problems of existing expansion joints. The Refraction expansion joints are characterized by continuous surfaces with small impact and low noise. The behavior of the Refraction expansion joints performs the bridge expansion behavior by rotation of the link. In the rotational behavior of the link, the bolt is the central axis of the behavior. Therefore, it can be said that the durability of the bolt is very important. However, the theoretical and experimental verification of the bolt durability of the Refraction expansion joint is lacking. In this paper, to verify the fatigue durability of the bolt, test specimens with a 300 mm Refraction expansion joint were fabricated. A strain gauge dedicated to the bolt was installed inside the manufactured test specimen bolt. The test method was applied in accordance with KS F 4425. The fatigue durability of the bolts assembled inside the diaphragm expansion joint was confirmed by the repeated fatigue test of 2,000,000 cycles.

  • Precipitation is one of the important factors in the hydrological cycle. It needs to understand accurate of spatial precipitation field because it has large spatio-temporal variability. Precipitation data obtained through the Tropical Rainfall Monitoring Mission (TRMM) 3B43 product is inaccurate because it has 25 km space scale. Downscaling of TRMM 3B43 product can increase the accuracy of spatial precipitation field from 25 km to 1 km scale. The relationship between precipitation and the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) (1 km space scale) which is obtained from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometers (MODIS) sensor loaded in Terra satellite is variable at different scales. Therefore regression equations were established and these equations apply to downscaling. Two renormalization strategies, Geographical Difference Analysis (GDA) and Geographical Ratio Analysis (GRA) are implemented for correcting the differences between remote sensing-derived and rain gauge data. As for considering the GDA method results, biases, the root mean-squared error (RMSE), MAE and Index of agreement (IOA) is equal to 4.26 mm, 172.16 mm, 141.95 mm, 0.64 in 2009 and 17.21 mm, 253.43 mm, 310.56 mm, 0.62 in 2011. In this study, we can see the 1km spatial precipitation field map over Korea. It will be possible to get more accurate spatial analysis of the precipitation field through using the additional rain gauges or radar data.
