  • Mean background concentrations of greenhouse gases such as $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ were estimated on Ulleungdo using PICARRO Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) analyzer. To improve the accuracy of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ concentrations, a standardized QA${\cdot}$QC (Quality Assurance Quality Control) procedure was employed with three steps: 1) the inspection procedure of physical limitation (e.g. the exclusion of data corresponding to the number of data of ${\leq}$50%) for hourly mean values, 2) a stage inspection (e.g. the use of data corresponding to ${\geq}15$ observations per day) for daily mean values, and 3) a fast fourier transform (FFT) analysis using curve-fitting methods for the investigation of climatic characteristics. The monthly mean concentrations of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ derived from three-step QA${\cdot}$QC procedure were then compared with those observed at Anmyundo (Korea) and Ryori (Japan). Overall, the error of mean $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ concentrations estimated in this study distinctly decreased. However, in comparison with their concentrations monitored at Ryori, the $CO_2$ concentration at estimated at Ulleungdo is soemwhat lower than that of Anmyundo due to the missing data, which is statistically significant. On the other hand, the former has a statistically significant higher value of $CH_4$ that of the latter.

  • The purposes of this study are the analysis of landfill gases(LFGs) in old open dumping landfill site near middle city and offer the useful data for reusing the landfill site as the residental, commercial and other purposes. The concentration of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ were lower as 8.28 vol% and 1,247 ppm but the concentrations of $NH_3$ and $H_2S$ were 7 times and 12 times higher than TLV-TWA standard. The concentration of $CH_4$ and other gases were lower than the ACGIH criterion. As the result of the environmental assessment on the open dumping landfill, if appears that this landfill is maturation phase and the formation of LFGs is reduced. If the treatment facility of $NH_3$ and $H_2S$ gases is prepared, it can be safely used as this landfill site.

  • As part of an air pollution epidemiological study of asthmatics residing in the Houston area, an air monitoring system provided data on the indoor and outdoor measurements of major pollutant gases sampled at selected residences during May ~ October 1981. Continuously monitored pollutant gases included sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$), nitrogen dioxide($NO_2$), nitric oxide(NO), carbon monoxide(CO), and ozone($O_3$). Outdoor levels for each pollutant were compared with their indoor levels(bedroom, kitchen, living room). Mean concentrations of each pollutant in the kitchen, and living room exceeded the mean levels outside except for ozone, while average bedroom levels for all gases except for $O_3$ and $NO_2$ were found higher than the corresponding outside levels. Indoor/ outdoor ratios for $SO_2$, NO, and CO were 1.8 ~ 2.7 times the outdoor levels, but indoor/ outdoor ratios for $NO_2$ and $O_3$ were 0.99 and 0.06, respectively. The impact of several important household characteristics (type of cooking fuel and cigarette smoking) on the indoor levels for these gases is evaluated.

  • Biofiltration is an attractive technique for elimination of VOCs and odorous compounds from low-concentration, high-volume waste gas streams because of its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. The objective of this study was to estimate the removal characteristics of Odorous Compounds including $H_2$S, $NH_3$End BTEX in MSW landfill gases. This Study was conducted at Nanjido landfill site. A compost from the Nanjido composting facility was used as a filling material for biofiltration. Extracted landfill gases were injected into biofilter reactors after mixing with air. Experiments were performed in an incubator being set to $20^{\circ}C$ $H_2$S concentrations were monitored at the depths of 25, 50, 75 and 100cm from the bottom Of the biofilter reactors. 98% of $H_2$S was removed at the filling depth of only 25cm. NH$_3$removal rate was about 85%. Toluene removal rate was the highest among BTEX. Significant pH drop of a filling material was not observed during the biofilter operation of 1 month. Without mixing the landfill gas stream with all, the removal rate of $H_2$S decreased down to 30%.

  • It has long been recognized that exposure to fire-induced toxic gases is a fatal hazard confront-ing people in fires. In this study, an indoor fire experiment was conducted in an unoccupied residential building located in An-san city, Kyoung-gi province, and the composition of effluent gases, which include CO, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $SO_2$, NO and $NO_2$, were measured by a gas analyzer. A group of lab rats were exposed to the toxic gases released from fire, and the blood samples of the rats were gathered every 2 minutes. A toxicity evaluation was conducted by analyzing the concentrations of Glucose, AST(GOT), ALT(GPT), CBC Count and CO(carboxy)-Hb in the blood samples. Shown from the analysis is the does-response relationship between the CO concentration that rats were exposed to and the CO-Hb concentration in rat blood.

  • In this paper, we have implemented a gas recognition system for classification and identification of explosive gases such as methane, propane, and butane using a sensor array and an artificial neural network. Such explosive gases which can be usually detected in the oil factory and LPG pipeline are very dangerous for a human being. We analyzed the characteristics of a multi-dimensional sensor signals obtained from the nine sensors using the principal component analysis(PCA) technique. Also, we implemented a gas pattern recognizer using a multi-layer neural network with error back propagation learning algorithm, which can classify and identify the sorts of gases and concentrations for each gas. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed gas recognition system is effective to identify the explosive gases. And also, we used DSP board(TMS320C31) to implement the proposed gas recognition system using the neural network for real time processing.

  • Objectives: This study analyzes TVOC concentrations in root industry workplaces in order to prevent probable occupational disease among workers. Root industry includes all the infrastructure of manufacturing, such as casting and molding. Methods: Real-time TVOC sensors were deployed in three root industry workplaces. We measured TVOC concentrations with these sensors and analyzed the results using a data-analysis tool developed with Python 3.9. Results: During the study period, the mean of the TVOC concentrations remained in an acceptable range, 0.30, 2.15, and 1.63 ppm across three workplaces. However, TVOC concentrations increased significantly at specific times, with respective maximum values of 4.98, 28.35, and 26.65 ppm for the three workplaces. Moreover, the analysis of hourly TVOC concentrations showed that during working hours or night shifts TVOC concentrations increased significantly to higher than twice the daily mean values. These results were scrutinized through classical decomposition results and autocorrelation indices, where seasonal graphs of the corresponding classical decomposition results showed that TVOC concentrations increased at a specific time. Trend graphs showed that TVOC concentrations vary by day. Conclusions: Deploying a real-time TVOC sensor should be considered to reflect irregularly high TVOC concentrations in workplaces in the root industry. It is expected that the real-time TVOC sensor with the presented data analysis methodology can eradicate probable occupational diseases caused by detrimental gases.

  • In this paper, a measuring circuit is designed through analyzing manufacture specification of the sensor based on MOS. And the best input-output polynomial are induced that really gas sensors are used in gas safety management industrial fields. Response characteristics of a MOS gas sensor is analysed by through sensor's output voltages are measured after standard gases with six kinds of concentrations are manufactured and are injected to the sensor. A lookup table is created by relations of sensor's output voltages by injecting gases with other concentrations. Because data of the formed lookup table are equal interval, a polynomial can be induced of method of approximation function. So the 5th polynomial of input-output for a sensor is defined, coefficients are calculated by using least squares method, and the 5th polynomial is completed for representing characteristics of the sensor. If the proposed polynomial is applied to gas leak detectors, an inverse transformation of polynomial and programing of array codes are recreated. In this research, polynomial is implemented with array types that intervals of values of a lookup table are one-fifth sampled and interpolated. The performance of proposed 5th calibration equation is verified that errors are reduced than a linear expression when tests are performed by measurement of concentrations against injection of standard gases.

  • In this study, the concentrations of major reduced sulfur compounds (H$_2$S, $CH_3$SH, DMS, and DMDS) were determined from ambient air in a monitoring station located in the mid-eastern area of Seoul. Measurements of sulfur species were conducted by the combination of on -line air sampling, thermal desorption, and capillary GC/PFPD analysis. A total number of 143 hourly samples were collected in the two time periods set between June and July 2003. The mean concentrations of four sulfur species measured in the whole study period were found on the order: DMS (535$\pm$183) > H$_2$S (47$\pm$10) > DMDS (35$\pm$22) > $CH_3$SH (6.19$\pm$29.4 pptv). The results of this study show that the concentrations of DMS at the study area are generally higher than those reported previously in the oceanic environments, while those of other sulfur species are not easy to compare with due to the lack of data. The H$_2$S concentrations were generally higher during the daytime than the nighttime, whereas those of others generally exhibited a reversed diurnal pattern. The overall results of our study suggest that the distribution of major reduced S compounds should be controlled by diverse processes in the urban area.

  • Since $CO_2$ concentrations in industrial flue gases are usually 10%-20%, one of the prerequisites for efficient $CO_2$ removal by algae is the level of tolerance of microalgal species to exposure to high concentrations of $CO_2$. A newly isolated microalgal strain, Chlorella sp. MRA-1, could retain growth with high concentrations of $CO_2$ up to 15%. The highest lipid productivity for Chlorella sp. MRA-1 was 0.118 g/l/day with a 5% $CO_2$ concentration. Octadecenoic acid and hexadecanoic acid, the main components of biodiesel, accounted for 70% of the total fatty acids. A lipid content of 52% of dry cell weight was achieved with limited amounts of nitrogen. Chlorella sp. MRA-1 seems to be an ideal candidate for biodiesel production when cultured with high concentrations of $CO_2$.
