This study has been mainly motivated to numerically model the transcritical mixing and reacting flow processes encountered in the liquid propellant rocket engines. In the present approach, turbulence is represented by the extended k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. To account for the real fluid effects, the propellant mixture properties are calculated by using SRK (Souve-Redlich-Kwong) equation of state model. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interaction in the turbulent non-premixed flames, the flamelet approach based on the real fluid flamelet library has been adopted. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the real fluid effects and the precise structure of the transcritical cryogenic liquid nitrogen jet and gaseous hydrogen/liquid oxygen coaxial jet flame.
In order for studying pressure-coupled dynamic responses of droplet vaporization, open-loop experiment of an isolated droplet vaporization exposed to pressure perturbations in stagnant gaseous environment is numerically conducted. Governing equations are solved for flow parameters at gas and liquid phases separately and thermodynamic parameters at the interfacial boundary are matched for problem closure. For high-pressure effects, vapor-liquid interfacial thermodynamics is rigorously treated. A series of parametric calculations in terms of mean pressure level and wave frequencies are carried out employing a n-pentane droplet in stagnant gaseous nitrogen. Results show that wave instability in view of pressure-coupled vaporization response seems more susceptible at higher pressures and higher wave frequencies. Mass evaporation rate responding to pressure waves is amplified with increase in pressure due to substantial reduction in latent heat of vaporization. Augmentation of perturbation frequency also enhances amplification due to the reduction of phase differences between pressure perturbation and surface temperature fluctuation.

To investigate the relation between flame structure and combustion dynamic characteristics in bi-swirl coaxial injectors for a liquid rocket engine, combustion experiments were performed using gaseous methane and gaseous oxygen. CH* radicals and pressure fluctuations were simultaneously measured by changing the injector geometries such as recess length/orifice diameter and the flow conditions such as equivalence ratio/oxidizer mass flow rate. As the injector geometries affected the velocities and mixing of the propellants, the change in flame structures was observed. From a result of the frequency analysis, it was confirmed that combustion dynamic characteristics varied according to the injector geometry/flow condition and combustion instabilities could occur under specific recess length/flow conditions.
A numerical study is done on the thrust vector control using gaseous secondary injection in the rocket nozzle. A commercial code, PHOENICS, is used to simulate the rocket nozzle flow. A $45^{\circ}-15^{\circ}$ conical nozzle is adopted to do numerical experiments. The flow in a rocket nozzle is assumed a steady, compressible, viscous flow. The exhaust gas of the rocket motor is used as an injectant to control the thrust vector of rocket at the constant rate of secondary injection flow. The injection location which is on the wall of rocket is chosen as a primary numerical variable. Computational results say that if the injection position is too close to nozzle throat, the reflected shock occurs. On the other hand, the more mass flow rate of injection is needed to get enough side thrust when the injection position is moved too far from the throat.

In order to develop a confident sampling technique, we designed and constructed a 6-port manifold MFC sampling system for collecting gaseous pollutants in air. Using this instrumentation, we tested the performance criteria of MFC system in terms of: (1) flow rate; (2) MFC-to-MFC variability; (3) tube-to-tube variability; and (4) time. It was interesting to find that the later two factors did not show any significant variations, while the former two show substantially large variations. However, as most of those variabilities are consistent enough to form systematic patterns, we were able to explain the occurrence patterns of all those MFC biases in terms of those four major variables. The overall results of our experiment suggest that one needs to use correction factor for each MFC unit under a given flow rate to maintain optimal accuracy and precision for sampling of those pollutants.
This paper describes numerical efforts to investigate combustion characteristics of HyShot scramjet combustor, where gaseous hydrogen is transversely injected into a supersonic cross flow. The corresponding altitude, angle of attack, and equivalence ratio are 35-23 km, $0^{\circ}$, and 0.426 respectively. Two-dimensional simulation reasonably predicts combustor inner pressure distribution and reveals periodic combustion characteristics of HyShot scramjet combustor. Altitude effects are also investigated and the strength of flow instability and subsonic boundary layer thickness affect the combustion efficiency according to altitudes. Frequency analyses provide the flow instability effects on the turbulent combustion in HyShot scramjet combustor.

When a secondary gaseous flow is injected vertically into a supersonic flow through circular nozzle, a complicated structure of flow field is produced around the injection area. The interaction between the two streams produces a strong bow shock wane on the upstream side of the side-jet. The results show that bow shock wave and turbulent boundary layer interaction induces the boundary layer separation in front of the side-jet. This study is to analyze the structure of flow fields and distribution of surface pressure on the flat plate according to total pressure ratio using a supersonic cold-flow system and also to study the control force of affected side-jet. The nozzle of main flow was designed to have Mach 2.88 at the exit. The injector has a sonic nozzle with 4mm diameter at the exit of the side-jet. In experiments, The oil flow visualization using a silicone oil and ink was conducted in order to analyze the structure of flow fields around the side-jet. The flow fields are visualized using the schlieren method. In this study, a computational fluid dynamic solution is also compared with experimental results.
A fully coupled finite element analysis (FEA) technique was developed for analyzing the discharge phenomena and dielectric liquid flow while considering surface charge density effects in dielectric flow guidance. In addition, the simulated speed of surface charge propagation was compared and verified with the experimental results shown in the literature. Recently, electrohydrodynamics (EHD) techniques have been widely applied to enhance the cooling performance of electromagnetic systems by utilizing gaseous or liquid media. The main advantage of EHD techniques is the non-contact and low-noise nature of smart control using an electric field. In some cases, flow can be achieved using only a main electric field source. The driving sources in EHD flow are ionization in the breakdown region and ionic dissociation in the sub-breakdown region. Dielectric guidance can be used to enhance the speed of discharge propagation and fluidic flow along the direction of the electric field. To analyze this EHD phenomenon, in this study, the fully coupled FEA was composed of Poisson's equation for an electric field, charge continuity equations in the form of the Nernst-Planck equation for ions, and the Navier-Stokes equation for an incompressible fluidic flow. To develop a generalized numerical technique for various EHD phenomena that considers fluidic flow effects including dielectric flow guidance, we examined the surface charge accumulation on a dielectric surface and ionization, dissociation, and recombination effects.
