  • The focus of this work is placed on the analysis of the mixture formation mechanism under the evaporative diesel spray of impinging and free conditions. As an experimental parameter, ambient gas density was selected. Effects of density variation of ambient gas on liquid and vapor-phase inside structure of evaporation diesel spray were investigated. Ambient gas density was changed between ${\rho}a=5.0\;kg/m^3$ and $12.3\;kg/m^3$. In the case of impinging spray, the spray spreading to the radial direction is larger due to the decrease of drag force of ambient gas in the case of the low density than that of the high density. On the other hand, in the case of free spray, in accordance with the increase in the ambient gas density, the liquid-phase length is getting short due to the increase in drag force of ambient gas. In order to examine the homogeneity of mixture consisted of vapor-phase fuel and ambient gas in the spray, image analysis was conducted with statistical thermodynamics based on the non-dimensional entropy (S) method. In the case of application of entropy analysis to diesel spray, the entropy value always increases. The entropy of higher ambient density is higher than that of lower ambient gas density during initial injection period.

  • Interest in hydrogen production to respond to climate change is increasing. Until now, hydrogen has been mainly produced through the SMR (Steam Methane Reforming) process using natural gas. A large amount of CO2 is emitted in the hydrogen production process through SMR, and the gas flow including CO2 generated in the SMR process has different characteristics for each emission source, so it is important to apply a suitable CO2 capture process. In the case of PSA tail gas or synthesis gas, the applicability of an amine-based process has been confirmed or demonstrated close to a commercial level. However, in the case of the flue gas generated from the reformer, it is still difficult to apply the conventional amine-based process because the partial pressure of CO2 is relatively low. Energy-saving innovative absorbents such as phase separation absorbents can be a solution to these difficulties.

  • In this study, the performance characteristics of the K-based sorbents (KEP-CO2P2, KEPCO RI, Korea) has been studied in relation with the heat exchanger structure and shape in a mixing zone of the carbonator in the bench-scale dry $CO_2$ capture process. Two types of heat exchangers (different structure and shape) were used in the carbonator as CASE 1 and CASE 2, in which the experiment has been continuously performed under the same operating conditions. During the continuous operation, working temperature of carbonator was 75 to $80^{\circ}C$, that of regenerator was 190 to $200^{\circ}C$, and $CO_2$ inlet concentration of the feed gas was 12 to 14 vol%. Especially, to compare the dynamic sorption capacity of sorbents, the differential pressure of the mixing zone in the carbonator was maintained around 400 to 500 mm $H_2O$. Also, solid samples from the carbonator and the regenerator were collected and weight variation of those samples was evaluated by TGA. The $CO_2$ removal efficiency and the dynamic sorption capacity were 64.3% and 2.40 wt%, respectively for CASE 1 while they were 81.0% and 4.66 wt%, respectively for CASE 2. Also, the dynamic sorption capacity of the sorbent in CASE 1 and CASE 2 was 2.51 wt% and 4.89 wt%, respectively, based on the weight loss of the TGA measurement results. Therefore, It was concluded that there could be a difference in the performance characteristics of the same sorbents according to the structure and type of heat exchanger inserted in the carbonator under the same operating conditions.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the effective operation method by developing prediction model for the gas production rate, an indicator of the effectiveness of anaerobic digestion tank, using data mining. At the result, gas production estimate model is developed by using ANN within 10% error. It is expected to help operation of anaerobic digestion by suggesting selected parameter. Meanwhile case based reasoning is applied to develop dewatering cake management technology. Case based reasoning uses the most similar examples of past when a new problem occurs, therefore in this study, management measures are developed that proposes dewatering cake minimization with the minimum change by applying the case based reasoning to sludge disposal process.

  • Steam Reforming H2 Generation (SRH2G) System is a chemical process to produce hydrogen through steam reforming of hydrocarbon. Largely speaking, there are two types of materials for the SRH2G: 1) Oil and coal, and 2)Natural Gas such as shale gas. From the perspective of cost, quality (purity), and environmental burden (pollution), the latter is much more desirable than the former. For this reason, research on SRH2G using natural gas is actively carried out, and implemented and operated in the various industry. In this paper, we develop a natural gas based SRH2G system via systems engineering approach. Specifically, we first derived stakeholder requirements, followed by systems requirements and finally system architecture via a tailored SE process for plant (called Plant Systems Engineering (PSE) process) based on ISO/IEC 15288. The developed method was applied to iron and steel plant as a case study. Through the case study, by the SE approach, we were convinced that a successful system satisfying stakeholders' requirements within the given constraints can be developed, verified and validated.

  • This study presents a methodology of history matching to evaluate the productivity of shale gas reservoir with high reliability and predict future production rate in the Horn-River basin, Canada. Sensitivity analysis was performed to analyze the effect of physical properties of shale gas reservoir on productivity. Based on the results, reservoir properties were classified into 4 cases and history matching were performed considering the classified 4 cases as objective function. The blind test was conducted using additional field production data for 3 years after the history matching period. The error of gas production rate in Case 1(all reservoir parameters), Case 2(influenced parameters for productivity), Case 3(controllable parameters), and Case 4(uncontrollable parameters) were 7.67%, 7.13%, 17.54%, and 10.04%, respectively. This means that it seems to be effective to consider all reservoir parameters in early period for 4 years but Case 2 which considered influenced parameters for productivity shows the highest reliability in predicting future production. The estimated ultimate recovery (EUR) of production well predicted using the Case 2 model was estimated to be 17.24 Bcf by December 2030 and the recovery factor compared to original gas in place (OGIP) was 32.2%.

  • A new $MoO_3$ based microsensor with low power consumption was presented. Typical size of sensor was 5mm in width and 8mm in length. As a sensitive electrode, $MoO_3$ was successfully fabricated by IC technology on pyrex glass of $250{\mu}m$ in thickness. After annealing at $550^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs, the film was fully crystallized and demonstrated as pure $MoO_3$ structure. The grain size of $MoO_3$ was plat like and typical size was about $1{\mu}m$. Based on the results of sensitivity measurement, $MoO_3$ microsensor shows especially high selectivity to $H_2$ reducing gas atmosphere. The applied heater power was lower than 0.5 Watt.

  • Heat transfer coefficients and static pressure distributions on a gas turbine vane endwall were experimentally investigated in a 5 bladed linear cascade. The Reynolds number based on an axial chord length and the cascade exit velocity was 500,000. Both heat transfer and pressure measurements on the vane endwall were made at the two different turbulence intensity levels of 6.8% and 10.8%. Detailed heat transfer coefficient distributions on the vane endwall region were measured using a hue detection based transient liquid crystals technique. Results show various regions of high and low heat transfer coefficients on the vane endwall surface due to several types of secondary flows and vortices. Heat transfer coefficient and endwall static pressure distributions showed similar trends for both turbulence intensity, however, the averaged heat transfer coefficients for higher turbulence intensity case was higher than the lower turbulence intensity case by 15%.
