  • The effect of cutted pin in front of pin-fin array was analyzed for increasing the cooling performance of gas turbine blade. The numerical simulations were conducted to figure out the flow and thermal characteristics. The base case which is staggered pin-fin array, cut pin case 1 which has X2/Dp=1.25 cut pin and cut pin case 2 which has X3/Dp=1.75 cut pin were compared. The results showed that cut pin increases the strength of the horseshoe vortex which occurred at the leading edge of pin-fin array. Furthermore, the wake effect is reduced at the trailing edge of pin-fin array. As a result, the heat transfer distribution on the endwall increases. However, the friction factor increases owing to the installation of cut pin, but the thermal performance factor is increased maximum 23.8% in cut pin case 2. Therefore, installation of cut pin will be helpful for increasing the cooling performance of pin-fin array of gas turbine blade.

  • In this study, a 2-W micro-gas turbine engine was designed using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, and analytical and experimental investigations of its potential under actual combustion conditions were performed. An ultra-micro-gas turbine contains a turbo-charger, combustor, and generator. A compressor, turbine blade, and generator coil were manufactured using MEMS technology. The shaft was supported by a precision computer numerical control machined air bearing, and a permanent magnet was attached to the end of the shaft for generation. An analysis found that the cooling effect of the air bearing and compressor was sufficient to cover the combustor heat, which was verified in an actual experiment.

  • Ni-base superalloy has excellent resistance to extreme environments such as high temperatures and high stresses and are used as materials for large gas turbines. In this paper, the specimens were taken from the blade that were used for a long time, and their life span was studied by microstructure analysis and avoidance of cursing. The microstructural analysis of the specimens was carried out using a OM and SEM to observe the coarsening, carbides on gamma prime. Low-cycle fatigue tests were performed on new material and airfoil of long time-used blade. The test was conducted under various deformation conditions and temperature conditions of $760^{\circ}C$ and $870^{\circ}C$. The low cycle fatigue test was carried out using the Coffin-Manson equation and the fatigue life was predicted. After the test, crack path and fracture surface were analyzed using SEM.

  • Turbine blades and disc, which are one of the most important rotating parts of a gas turbine engine, are required to have highly efficient performance in order to minimize the total life cycle costs. Owing to these requirements, these components are exposed to severe conditions such as extreme turbine inlet temperatures, high compression ratios, and high speeds. To evaluate the structural integrity of a turbine disc under these conditions, material modeling and finite element analysis techniques are essential; furthermore, shape optimization is necessary for determining the optimal solution. This study aims to generate 2D finite element models of an axisymmetry model and a sector one and to perform thermal-structural coupled-field analysis and contact analysis. Structurally vulnerable areas such as the disc bore and disc-blade interface region are analyzed by a parametric study. Finally, an improved design is provided based on the results, and the necessity of elaborate shape optimization is confirmed.

  • The mechanical properties and microstructure of 1st stage used and casted buckets of $1,100^{\circ}C$ class gas turbine were analyzed to evaluate quality of the components. Gas turbine 1st stage buckets are exposed and operated in the most severe environment except 1st nozzle among the hot path gas components. Additionally, since the 1st stage bucket is a rotating component, so it may cause additional damage to the rear buckets and nozzles which cause a huge financial loss. Therefore, the quality of the casted bucket must be evaluated prior to use at the plant site. In this study, the microstructure analysis and mechanical properties of the casted bucket were evaluated to verify the casting quality and it was confirmed that the quality conditions designed by KEPCO were satisfied. A bucket operated 46% (11,067EOH) of its life time also evaluated for quality comparison.

  • This study was performed to determine the repair weldability of the damaged Ni type superalloy used for gas turbine blade. The experimental works included the evaluation of the microstructures of the damaged blade, selection of the repair welding procedure, characterization of repair weldment and finding the heat treatment procedures for repaired weldment. The morphology of the microstructure for the base metal was composed of austenite matrix with cubical ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase, MC type coarse precipitates located within grain and fine $M_{23}C_6$ type precipitates decorated at grain boundaries. The repair welding process using 90 amp current exhibited the best weld properties showing no weld microcracks. The solution and aging heat treatments of the repaired weldment could recover the original service properties of the damaged blade.

  • The propellant mixture ratio of gas generator changes when thrust control valve operate to change LRE thrust level. The mixture ratio change of gas generator result in gas temperature change and failure of turbine blade or deterioration of LRE specific impulse. The mixture ratio stabilizer has been developed to maintain propellant mixture ratio of gas generator. This article deals with design and static/dynamic characteristic of stabilizer. Also gas generator system simulation test has shown that the stabilizer can maintain propellant mixture ratio effectively within tolerable range.

  • The Ni-base superalloy GTD-111DS was designed in the 1970s and is widely used as the material of the first stage blade under a severe combination of temperature and pressure in gas turbines. But because GTD-111DS is distributed in the shape of blade and blade has a unique figure and many cooling channels, it is hard to manufacture the test specimen. In this reason, there are little data on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy. Therefore through the microstructure analysis, present paper observed that the shape of $\gamma{'}$ did not change even if aging time was increased but the amount and volume of the deposition of secondary $\gamma{'}\;rose\;and\;secondary\;\gamma{'}\;grew\;among\;primary\;\gamma{'}$. Also, by tensile test for different temperature, there was difference between yield strength and tensile strength in room temperature on heat treatment and extracting region but the more increasing temperature, the more decreasing difference between yield strength and tensile strength.

  • The welding technology for production of power plant facility as for other industries has been progressing forward automation and mechanization for cost reduction and shortening of cycle time. The welding for boiler tube is automated or mechanized as the parts and subassemblies of tubes are conveyed automatically in the shop. The temperature of boiler stearn is being progressively increased for higher plant efficiency. The welding of nuclear component is characterized by heavy thickness and narrow gap Submerged Arc Welding. Narrow gap Gas Metal Arc Welding and Electron Beam Welding is applied to turbine diaphragm. To improve the resistance of solid particle erosion of turbine blade and nozzle partition, HVOF spray technology and boriding process has been applied.

  • Secondary flows in gas turbines, especially those associated tip clearance and labyrinth seals, have become a focus of interest for engine manufacturers. In the past, many analytical and experimental studies, which focused solely on the flows in either tip clearances or seals, have been conducted. This paper presents an analytical model that describes the flow response in a single stage turbine induced by a finite sealing gap at the turbine rotor. The flow is assumed to be axisymmetric and the analysis is done in the meridional plane. Upon going through the stage, the radially uniform upstream flow is assumed to split into two streams one associated with the seal and the other which has gone through the blades. The former is referred to as the leakage flow, and the latter is referred the as the passage flow. The passage flow is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible while the flow in the seal can be modeled as either inviscid or viscous. Thus, the model is capable of predicting the kinematic effects of labyrinth seals on the turbine flow field.
