Recently, an air-lift bio-reactor operated by micro bubbles has been utilized to product hydrogen fuel. To enhance the performance, characteristics of hydrodynamics inside the bio-reactor were analyzed using a numerical simulation for two-phase flow. An Eulerian model was employed for both of liquid and gas phases. The standard k-ε model was used for turbulence induced by micro bubbles. A Population Balance Model was employed to consider size distribution of bubbles. A hollow cylinder was introduced at the center of the reactor to reduce a dead area which disturbs circulation of CO bubbles. An appropriate diameter of the draft tube and hollow cylinder were optimized for better performance of the bio-reactor. The optimum model could be obtained when the cross-sectional area ratio of the hollow cylinder to the reactor, and the width ratio of the riser to the downcomer approached 0.4 and 3.5, respectively. Consequently, it is expected that the optimum model could enhance the performance of the bio-reactor with the homogeneous distribution and higher density of CO, and more effective mixing.

Analysis model for the two-phase catalytic reactor is presented. With the progress in development of micro thermofluidic devices, needs fur understanding of the phenomena in two phase reaction in cm scale has been arisen. To investigate thermal and reactive performance of down scaled two phase reactor simple analysis model that is a kind of lumped flow model is proposed. Analysis model presented is based on the experiment on mm scale model reactor. Target experiment is catalytic decomposition of 70wt% hydrogen peroxide with existence of perovskite L $a_{0.8}$S $r_{0.2}$Co $O_3$ catalyst. It is composed of balance equations of mass and energy. Each phase is considered to be a species fur the simplicity. Axial diffusion and transversal distribution of properties are neglected. Two phase catalytic reaction is modeled as successive gasification of liquid lump around catalyst and reaction in gas phase. Heat transfer is modeled by model function ofNu number. Modeled Nu is expressed as Nu=N $u_{0}$ (1+ $a_1$( $a_2$$T^{-}$$a_3$)exp( $a_4$$T^{-1}$)exp( $a_{5}$ z). Transfer coefficients are determined by the comparison of experimental results. With the model, heat transfer characteristics are investigated. Also by the mass transfer coefficient, characteristics in mass transfer is investigated. With the result basic understanding on design and analysis of mm scale two-phase reactive device is obtained. Also it can be further applied to micro scale reactive device fabricated by micromachining.ing..

Cooling the electronic equipment is one of the major focal points of the design process and the key to successful product launch. The two-phase loop thermosyphone which is a good candidate among many available options was investigated fur cooling of the high power amplifiers. The system is composed of evaporator which contains 6 parallel cold plates, fan cooled condenser, gas-liquid separator, and interconnecting tubes. Experiments were performed for several refrigerant charging values, hs and as a experiment result, the optimum charging value fur this system was proposed. In order to optimize the system design, the operating cycle pressure and inlet/outlet temperatures of evaporator and condenser are measured and analyzed. The effect of the three parameters such as flow rate and temperature of condenser cooling air, and thermal load on the evaporator are investigated. The lower the operating pressure and the cycle temperatures are also better to prevent the leakage of the system. The system invesigated in this paper can be directly used for cooling of a real unmanned wireless communication station.

Effects of fuel injection timing on the lean misfire limit of a sequential MPI SI engine has been investigated. To investigate the interaction of injection timing and intake flow characteristics, so called axial stratification phenomena, 4 kinds of different intake swirl port of the same combustion chamber geometry have been teated in a single cylinder engine test bench. And 2 kinds of fuel, gasoline and compressed natural gas(CNG), were used to see the effect of liquid fuel vaporization. Result shows that combination of port swirl and injection timing governs the lean misfire limit and lean misfire limit envelopes remain almost the same for a given ratio regardless of engine speed. It is also found that two phase flow has some effects on lean misfire limit.
Characteristics of GDL (Gas Diffusion Layer) mainly determine the gas diffusion and water removal in a cell, thereby changing the performance and affecting durability of PEFC. To optimize the water management and understand the two phase flow in a GDL, it is important to study the behaviors of GDL micro structure under the real operating condition. In the clamped condition of cell, the GDL beneath the rib is more compressed than beneath the channel. Many researches on physical, electrochemical, mechanical behaviors of gas diffusion layer has been conducted. However, changes in surface properties under clamped condition have rarely studied. In present study, the morphology of broken connections of carbon fibers and detachment of PTFE coatings on the fibers were shown from the microscopic observations. In addition, changes in wetting properties of GDL by compression were investigated by using XPS and liquid uptake methods. The hydrophobic characteristics of GDL surface beneath the rib of the flow field plate are changed due to the deformation of micro structure.

Interfacial shear stresses have been determined for countercurrent stratified flow of air and water in a nearly-horizontal rectangular channel, based upon measurements of pressure drop, gas velocity profiles and mean film thickness. A dimensionless correlation for the interfacial friction factor has been developed as a function of the gas and liquid Reynolds numbers. Equivalent surface roughnesses for the interfacial friction factor have been calculated using the Nikuradse correlation and have been compared with the intensity of the wave height fluctuation on the interface. The results show that the interfacial shear stress is mainly affected by turbulent mixing near the interface due to the wave motion rather than by the roughened surface.

In this study, the autoignition process of liquid fuel, injected into hot and stagnant air in a 2-D axisymmetric confined cylindrical combustor, has been investigated. Eulerian-Lagrangian scheme was adopted to analyze the two-phase flow and combustion. The unsteady conservation equations were used to solve the transition of the gas field. Interactions between two phases were accounted by using the particle source in cell (PSI-Cell) model, which was used for detailed consideration of the finite rates of transports between phases. And infinite conduction model was adopted for the vaporization of droplets. The results have shown that the process of the autoignition consists of heating up of droplets, vaporization, mixing and ignition. The ignition criteria could be determined by the temporal variations of temperature, reaction rate and species mass fraction. And the effects of various parameters on ignition phenomena are examined. These have shown that the increasing the reaction rate and/or the vaporization rate can reduce the ignition delay time.

In the situation which Russia's ratification of the Kyoto protocol at February,2004, ANNEX I nations must reduce GHG(Green House Gas) discharge rate from 2008 by 2012 to the reduction level at 1990. We introduce the CO₂ ocean sequestration that is one of promising method for getting the stable CO₂ concentration in the atmosphere. There are four categories : ocean transportation technique, ocean initial dissolution technique, ocean deep current evaluation technique, and ocean biological evaluation technique. In this paper, we carried out the fundamental numerical study on the ocean initial dissolution technique, when the Liquidized CO₂ is emitted at the deep ocean, It is very important to the dissolution rate of movable CO₂ interface because it Is directly impact to the ocean organism. In order to investigate the relation of the interface movement and rate of the dissolution, we develope CR(Computational Fluid Dynamics) code that was constructed by the finite volume method based on the unstructured mesh, and a droplet's boundary surface can move and one direction dissolution from disperse phase into continuous phase adopted as its physics be. This study clarifies hydrodynamic relation between solubility and movement of the droplet through the verification of the Cm code.

In the numerical simulation of wave fields using a multi-phase flow model that considers simultaneous flows of materials with different states such as gas, liquid and solid, there is need of an accurate representation of the interface separating the fluids. We adopted an algebraic interface capturing method called tangent of hyperbola for interface-capturing(THINC) method for the capture of the free-surface in computations of multi-phase flow simulations instead of geometrical-type methods such a volume of fluid(VOF) method. The THINC method uses a hyperbolic tangent functions to represent the surface, and compute the numerical flux for the fluid fraction functions. One of the remarkable advantages of THINC method is its easy applicability to incorporate various numerical codes based on Navier-Stokes solver because it does not require the extra geometric reconstruction needed in most of VOF-type methods. Several tests were carried out in order to investigate the advection of interfaces and to verify the applicability of the THINC method to wave fields based on the one-field model for immiscible two-phase flows (TWOPM). The numerical results revealed that the THINC method is able to track the interface between air and water separating the fluids although its algorithm is fairly simple.
This study presents a particle-wall filtration model for predicting the particle motion behavior in a typical rotational flow field-filtration in blower system of cooker hood. Based on computational fluid dynamics model, air flow and particles has been simulated by Lagrangian-particle/ Eulerian-gas approaches and get verified by experiment data from a manufacturer. Airflow volume, particle diameter and local structure, which are related to the particle filtration has been studied. Results indicates that: (1) there exists an optimal airflow volume of $1243m^3/h$ related to the most appropriate filtration rate; (2) Diameter of particle is the significant property related to the filtration rate. Big size particles can represent the filtration performance of blower; (3) More than 86% grease particles are caught by impeller blades firstly, and then splashed onto the corresponding location of worm box internal wall. These results would help to study the micro-particle motion behavior and evaluate the filtration rate and structure design of blower.
