  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of gas pressure infiltration on microstructure. Continuous fiber reinforced Al matrix composite wire is produced by gas pressure infiltration process. With the increase of gas pressure, porosity and wettabillity was improved. No chemical reaction product was detected at the interface of $Al_2O_3$ and Al.

등온 저압화학기상침투법에 의한 탄소/탄소 복합재료의 치밀화에 대한 제조공정변수의 영향 (Effect of Processing Parameters on the Densification of Carbon/Carbon Composite by Isothermal Low-Pressure Chemical Vapor Infiltration)

  • 프로판($C_3H_8$)을 반응가스로 사용하여 등온 저압화학기상침투법(low-pressure chemical vapor infiltration)으로 탄소/탄소 복합재료를 치밀화 할 때 반응온도, 반응가스농도, 가스유량, 반응압력 등의 제조공정변수들이 치밀화에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위하여 실험계획법(Rdbust design method)에 의한 실험을 행하였다. 1회의 등온 저압화학기상침투 실험으로 탄소/탄소 복합재료의 부피 밀도와 표면과 내부의 부피 밀도의 차이를 특성치(characteristic value)로 한 실험계획법의 분산분석(analysis of variance)에 의하면 반응온도, 반응가스농도, 가스유량 등의 제고공정변수가 치밀화에 기여도가 높으며, 반응압력의 기여도와 제조공정변수들의 교호작용(interaction)에 의한 기여도는 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 반응온도가 $1100^{\circ}C$, 반응가스농도가 100% $C_3H_8$, 가스유량이 100 SCCM, 반응압력이 5torr인 조건에서 탄소/탄소 복합재료는 가장 높은 부피 밀도값을 나타내었으나 시편의 표면과 내부의 부피 밀도 차이값은 컸다.

  • 본 연구에서는 펄스-CVI (Chemical Vapor Infiltration)에 의해 탄화규소/탄소 복합재료를 제조하는 공정에 대한 수치모사가 행해졌다. 각 펄스가 가스 주입시간, 반응시간, 배출시간으로 구성될 때, 반응시간과 배출시간의 영향이 관찰되었다. 또한 반응가스 농도와 압력의 영향이 연구되었다. 탄소프리폼에의 탄화규소의 균일한 침착과 반응시간 단축을 위한 펄스-CVI공정의 이점이 확인되었다.

  • The main purpose of this study is enhancing the filtering efficiency, performance and durability of filter by growing SiC whiskers on cordierite honeycomb substrate. The experiment was performed by Chemical Vapor Infiltration (CVI) in order to control pore morphology of substrate. Increasing the mechanical strength of porous substrate is one of important issues. The formation of "networking structure" in the pore of porous substrate increased mechanical strength. The high pressure gas injection to the specimen showed that a little of whiskers were separated from substrate but additional film coating enhanced the stability of whisker at high pressure gas injection. Particle trap test was performed. More nano-particle was trapped by whisker growth at the pore of substrate. Therefore it is expected that the porous cordierite which deposited the SiC whisker will be the promising material for the application as filter trapping the nano-particles.

  • Thermal management is one of the critical aspects in the design of highly integrated microelectronic devices. The reliability of electronic components is limited not only to operating temperature but also by the thermal stresses caused during the operation. The need for higher power densities calls for use of advanced heat spreader materials. A copper diamond composite has been developed with high thermal conductivity $(\lambda)$ and tailorable coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Copper diamond composites are processed via gas pressure assisted infiltration with different copper alloys. Emphasis has been placed on the addition of trace elements in deisgning the copper alloys to facilitate a compromise between thermal conductivity and mechanical adhesion. The interfaces between the alloy and the diamond are related to the thermal properties of these copper composites.

Effect of the Holding Temperature and Vacuum Pressure for the Open Cell Mg Alloy Foams

  • Metal foam has many excellent properties, such as light weight, incombustibility, good thermal insulation, sound absorption, energy absorption, and environmental friendliness. It has two types of macrostructure, a closed-cell foam with sealed pores and an open-cell foam with open pores. The open-cell foam has a complex macrostructure consisting of an interconnected network. It can be exploited as a degradable biomaterial and a heat exchanger material. In this paper, open cell Mg alloy foams have been produced by infiltrating molten Mg alloy into porous pre-forms, where granules facilitate porous material. The granules have suitable strength and excellent thermal stability. They are also inexpensive and easily move out from open-cell foamed Mg-Al alloy materials. When the melt casting process used an inert gas, the molten magnesium igniting is resolved easily. The effects of the preheating temperature of the filler particle mould, negative pressure, and granule size on the fluidity of the open cell Mg alloy foam were investigated. With the increased infiltration pressure, preheat temperature and granule sizes during casting process, the molten AZ31 alloy was high fluidity. The optimum casting temperature, preheating temperature of the filler particle mould, and negative pressure were $750^{\circ}C$, $400-500^{\circ}C$, and 5000-6000 Pa, respectively, At these conditions the AZ31 alloy had good fluidity and castability with the longest infiltration length, fewer defects, and a uniform pore structure.

Long-Term Experiments for Demonstrating Durability of a Concrete Barrier and Gas Generation in a Low-and Intermediate-Level Waste Disposal Facility

  • Long-term experiments have been conducted on two important safety issues: long-term durability of a concrete barrier with the steel reinforcements and gas generation from low-and intermediate-level wastes in an underground research tunnel of a radioactive waste disposal facility. The gas generation and microbial communities were monitored from waste packages (200 L and 320 L) containing simulated dry active wastes. In the concrete experiment, corrosion sensors were installed on the steel reinforcements which were embedded 10 cm below the surface of concrete in a concrete mock-up, and groundwater was fed into the mock-up at a pressure of 2.1 bars to accelerate groundwater infiltration. No clear evidence was observed with respect to corrosion initiation of the steel reinforcement for 4 years of operation. This is attributed to the high integrity and low hydraulic conductivity of the concrete. In the gas generation experiment, significant levels of gas generation were not measured for 4 years. These experiments are expected to be conducted for a period of more than 10 years.

Distribution of Deposited Carbon in Carbon Brake Disc Made by Pressure-Gradient Chemical Vapor Infiltration

  • The carbon brake discs were manufactured by densification the carbon fiber preform using PG-CVI technology with Propene as a carbon precursor gas and Nitrogen as a carrier gas. The densities of carbon brake discs were tested at different densification time. The results indicate that the densification rate is more rapid before 100 hrs than after 200 hrs. The CTscanning image and the SEM technology were used to observe the inner subtle structure. CT-images show the density distribution in the carbon brake disc clearly. The carbon brake disk made by PG-CVI is not very uniform. There is a density gradient in the bulk. The high-density part in the carbon brake is really located in the friction surface, especially in the part of inner circle. This density distribution is most suitable for the stator disc.

화학증착 탄화규소 휘스커에 의한 다공성 알루미나 필터의 기공구조 개질 및 특성 평가 (Pore Structure Modification and Characterization of Porous Alumina Filter with Chemical Vapor Infiltration (CVI) SiC Whisker)

  • 본 연구에서는 다공성 알루미나 기판의 기공 형상 개질을 통해서 필터의 집진 효율, 성능 및 내구성 향상을 위한 공정에 대해서 다루었다. 탄화규소 휘스커를 통한 기공 개질을 위해서 모재의 표면뿐만 아니라 기공 내부에까지 균일한 탄화규소 휘스커를 얻고자 화학 기상 침착법(Chemical Vapor Infiltration: CVI)을 사용하여 실험을 진행하였다. 실험결과 증착 온도와 증착 위치 및 입력 기체비와 같은 공정 조건의 변화에 따라 증착 경향에 확연한 차이를 나타내는 것을 알 수 있다. 다시 말해 첫째, 시편의 관찰 위치가 표면에서 내부로 들어갈수록 “반응 기체의 고갈 효과”로 인해 휘스커가 점점 세선화 되는 것을 볼 수 있으며 두 번째로 증착 온도에 따라서 debris, whisker, film등과 같이 증착물의 형상이 변화하게 된다. 이러한 형상의 변화는 여러 가지 물성의 변화를 가져오게 되는데 그 중에서, film이 증착 되는 경우에는 기판의 강도가 박 115.7% 가량 현저하게 증가하는 반면에 비표면적과 기체 투과율은 감소하게 되지만, 휘스커의 경우에는 강도가 95%, 비표면적은 33.5% 정도가 증가하며 기체 투과율 감소를 최소화 할 수 있다. 따라서 다공성 알루미나 기판 내부 기공에 휘스커를 증착 하면 필터로 인한 압력 저하를 최소화하면서 기공의 크기보다 작은 미세 분진들을 걸러 낼 수 있게 되므로 차세대 필터 재료로 기대된다.

  • Mankind is enjoying a great convenience of their life by the rapid growth of secondary industry since the Industrial Revolution and it is possible due to the invention of huge power such as engine. The automobile which plays the important role of industrial development and human movement is powered by the Engine Module, and especially Diesel engine is widely used because of mechanical durability and energy efficiency. The main work mechanism of the Diesel engine is composed of inhalation of the organic material (coal, oil, etc.), combustion, explosion and exhaust Cycle process then the carbon compound emissions during the last exhaust process are essential which is known as the major causes of air pollution issues in recent years. In particular, COx, called carbon oxide compound which is composed of a very small size of the particles from several ten to hundred nano meter and they exist as a suspension in the atmosphere. These Diesel particles can be accumulated at the respiratory organs and cause many serious diseases. In order to compensate for the weak point of such a Diesel Engine, the DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter) post-cleaning equipment has been used and it mainly consists of ceramic materials(SiC, Cordierite etc) because of the necessity for the engine system durability on the exposure of high temperature, high pressure and chemical harsh environmental. Ceramic Material filter, but it remains a lot of problems yet, such as limitations of collecting very small particles below micro size, high cost due to difficulties of manufacturing process and low fuel consumption efficiency due to back pressure increase by the small pore structure. This study is to test the possibility of new structure by direct infiltration of SiC Whisker on Carbon felt as the next generation filter and this new filter is expected to improve the above various problems of the Ceramic DPF currently in use and reduction of the cost simultaneously. In this experiment, non-catalytic VS CVD (Vapor-Solid Chemical Vaporized Deposition) system was adopted to keep high mechanical properties of SiC and MTS (Methyl-Trichloro-Silane) gas used as source and H2 gas used as dilute gas. From this, the suitable whisker growth for high performance filter was observed depending on each deposition conditions change (input gas ratio, temperature, mass flow rate etc.).
