Multi-dimensional two-phase phenomena occur in many industrial applications, particularly in a nuclear reactor during steady operation or a transient period. Appropriate modeling of complicated behavior induced by a multi-dimensional flow is important for the reactor safety analysis results. SPACE, a safety analysis code for thermal hydraulic systems which is currently being developed, was designed to have the capacity of multi-dimensional two-phase thermo-dynamic phenomena induced in the various phases of a nuclear system. To validate the performance of SPACE, a two-dimensional two-phase flow test was performed with slab geometry of the test section having a scale of $1.43m{\times}1.43m{\times}0.11m$. The test section has three inlet and three outlet nozzles on the bottom and top gap walls, respectively, and two outlet nozzles installed directly on the surface of the slab. Various kinds of two-dimensional air/water flows were simulated by selecting combinations of the inlet and outlet nozzles. In this study, two-dimensional two-phase void fraction profiles were quantified by measuring the local gap impedance at 225 points. The flow conditions cover various flow regimes by controlling the flow rate at the inlet boundary. For each selected inlet and outlet nozzle combination, the water flow rate ranged from 2 to 20 kg/s, and the air flow rate ranged from 2.0 to 20 g/s, which corresponds to 0.4 to 4 m/s and 0.2 to 2.3 m/s of the superficial liquid and gas velocities based on the inlet port area, respectively.

Transient response of temperature distributions in a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) pressurizer vessel wall for the Inadvertent Auxiliary Spray transient has been analyzed with conservatism accounted for the resulting thermal stresses in the regions of the vessel wall which are wetted by the spray water droplets. In order to determine the forced convective heat transfer coefficient at the inner boundary surface of vessel wall where the droplets impinge on and flow down, the transient temperatures of spray droplets when they reach the inner surface of the vessel wall after travelling from the spray nozzle through the pressurizer interior space occupied with the saturated steam-noncondensable hydrogen gas mixture have been predicted. The transient temperature distributions in the vessel wall have been obtained by using the finite element method, and the typical results have been provided. It has been shown that the results of thermal analysis are consistent with representation of the input transient and have plausible physical meaning.

Ultrafine calcim carbonate powders with the size of $0.05~0.1\;{\mu}m$ and the calcite phase were synthesized by the nozzle spouting method, which could be only obtained when high calcium ion concentration within slurry was maintained at the beginning of the reaction. But, in the regions of low ${Ca(OH)}_2$ concentration (0.5~1.0 wt%) or high ${Ca(OH)}_2$ concentration (<3.0 wt%), synthesized calcium carbonate powder was shown the large particle size with agglomeration. To obtain ultrafine calcium carbonate powder in this region, the methods of slurry circuation and $CO_{2}$ gas supply were changed during reaction. Resultly, it was possible to synthesize ultrafine particles (${\approx}0.05{\mu}\textrm{m}$)in the regions of low ${Ca(OH)}_2$ concentration (${\approx}0.5wt%$) and high ${Ca(OH)}_2$ concentration (${\approx}0.5wt%$), which can not be obtained the fine calcium carbonate powder still now.

A steady-state/transient performance simulation model was newly developed for the propulsion system of the CRW (Canard Rotor Wing) type UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) during flight mode transition. The CRW type UAV has a new concept RPV (Remotely Piloted Vehicle) which can fly at two flight modes such as the take-off/landing and low speed forward flight mode using the rotary wing driven by engine bypass exhaust gas and the high speed forward flight mode using the stopped wing and main engine thrust. The propulsion system of the CRW type UAV consists of the main engine system and the duct system. The flight vehicle may generally select a proper type and specific engine with acceptable thrust level to meet the flight mission in the propulsion system design phase. In this study, a turbojet engine with one spool was selected by decision of the vehicle system designer, and the duct system is composed of main duct, rotor duct, master valve, rotor tip-jet nozzles, and variable area main nozzle. In order to establish the safe flight mode transition region of the propulsion system, steady-state and transient performance simulation should be needed. Using this simulation model, the optimal fuel flow schedules were obtained to keep the proper surge margin and the turbine inlet temperature limitation through steady-state and transient performance estimation. Furthermore, these analysis results will be used to the control optimization of the propulsion system, later. In the transient performance model, ICV (Inter-Component Volume) model was used. The performance analysis using the developed models was performed at various flight conditions and fuel flow schedules, and these results could set the safe flight mode transition region to satisfy the turbine inlet temperature overshoot limitation as well as the compressor surge margin. Because the engine performance simulation results without the duct system were well agreed with the engine manufacturer's data and the analysis results using a commercial program, it was confirmed that the validity of the proposed performance model was verified. However, the propulsion system performance model including the duct system will be compared with experimental measuring data, later.

The combustion characteristics of methane/hydrogen pre-mixed flame have been investigated with swirl stabilized flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor with constant heat load of 5.81 kW. Hydrogen/methane fuel and air were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through a burner nozzle with different degrees of swirl angle. The effects of hydrogen addition and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using particle image velocimetry (PIV), micro-thermocouples, various optical interference filters and gas analyzers to provide information about flow velocity, temperature distributions, and species concentrations of the reaction field. The results show that higher swirl intensity creates more recirculation flow, which reduces the temperature of the reaction zone and, consequently, reduces the thermal NO production. The distributions of flame radicals (OH, CH, C2) are dependent more on the swirl intensity than the percentage of hydrogen added to methane fuel. The NO concentration at the upper part of the reaction zone is increased with an increase in hydrogen content in the fuel mixture because higher combustibility of hydrogen assists to promote faster chemical reaction, enabling more expansion of the gases at the upper part of the reaction zone, which reduces the recirculation flow. The CO concentration in the reaction zone is reduced with an increase in hydrogen content because the amount of C content is relatively decreased.
The Blow-off characteristics of LPG/air lean pre-mixed flames were experimentally investigated using a double and a multiple concentric coflow burners. Experiments were conducted to understand the effects of recirculation motion, thermal interaction between flames, and stratified flame configuration. Here, the stratified premixed flame is a "new concept" of a flame that sequentially contains fuel rich, stoichiometric, and fuel lean reaction zones in a flame. The blow-off from a lean premixed flame was significantly suppressed with recirculation motion. The recirculation motion by itself, however, was not sufficient to prevent the blow-off when the equivalence ratio became low. The existence of a inner premixed flame could also help to prevent the blow-off of lean premixed flame; however, the blow-off suppression effect was rather diminished by weakened recirculation motion with the presence of inner flame. The inner flame could be separated from an outer flame on a multiple concentric coflow burner, causing recirculation motion as well as thermal interaction between flames to become effective; therefore, the blow-off was further suppressed. The lean premixed flame could be stabilized with a fuel rich premixed flames that was produced with the supply of fuel through an inner nozzle. The penetration of lean premixed gas from outside into the fuel stream produced a lifted rich premixed flame. Chemiluminescence images of OH, CH, and $C_2$ radicals confirmed the structure of a stratified premixed flame. The stable premixed flames could be obtained at the very fuel lean condition by applying the stratified premixed flame concept.

This paper investigates the effect of the rotational motion of a driving fluid generated by a rotational motion device at the inlet of a driving nozzle for a gas-liquid ejector, which is the main device used for ozonated ship ballast water treatment. An experimental apparatus was constructed to study the pressure and suction flow rate of each port of the ejector according to the back pressure. Experimental data were acquired for the ejector without rotational motion. Based on the data, a finite element model was then developed. The rotational motion of the driving fluid could improve the suction efficiency of the ejector based on the CFD model. Based on the CFD results, structure optimization was performed for the internal shape of the rotation induction device to increase the suction flow rate of the ejector, which was performed using the kriging technique and a metamodel. The optimized rotation induction device improved the ejector efficiency by about 3% compared to an ejector without rotational motion of the driving fluid.

High-pressure flows are ubiquitous in many industrial fields. A representative application is fuel injection using a common-rail control system in diesel engines, where the injection pressure in the injector exceeds 1000 bar. In high-speed injection, the fluid injected through the nozzle undergoes breakup owing to the interaction with the ambient gas. The breakup process influences mixture formation, which in turn influences combustion in diesel engines. Therefore, it is very important to analyze the breakup process of fuel spray. The Reitz and Diwakar model and cascade atomization and breakup (CAB) model were used in this study as sub-models for the numerical analysis of the breakup process of fuel spray. This study aims to precisely analyze the breakup process of spray and to investigate the breakup frequency of the injected fuel. Consequently, it proposes a suitable sub-model for analyzing the breakup process of a diesel spray by using CFX, a commercial CFD program.

This paper aims to examine the effect of rotational fluid motion about the efficiency of the gas - liquid ejector, which is a core unit in a ship equilibrium water treatment system. The ejector is a device for injecting ozone into ship equilibrium by the negative pressure generated by exchange of momentum between water and ozone. The existing ejector ejects the driving fluid with a simple form. In this paper, however, a rotation induction device is applied to the driving nozzle so that the driving fluid can be rotated and injected. To investigate the flow characteristics by the rotational movement of the driving fluid, CFD was used. The pressure and flow rate of the driving fluid, the negative pressure and suction flow rate of the suction fluid in the suction part, and the discharge pressure were predicted. On the basis of the results, the efficiency of the ejector using the rotation induction system was 22.25%, which was about 1.7% better than that of the existing ejector. Finally, to verify the feasibility of the CFD, an experiment was conducted on the ejector using the rotation induction device and the results were similar to those of the CFD.

In this paper, a 10N class liquid propellant rocket utilizing a dissolving reaction of hydrogen peroxide is constructed and tested. Through a series of designs, seven orifices with a diameter of 200 ${\mu}m$ and a nozzle with a neck of 2.5mm in diameter and area ratio of 2.56 were made. The platinum coated on Isolite was used for catalyst. 90wt% peroxide pressed at 20 bar by nitrogen gas was used for performance evaluation. The length of the catalyst bed and the load of platinum was taken as the parameters for this experiment. For the catalyst support length of 4cm loaded on 5wt% platinum, satisfactory $c^*$ efficiency and stable thrust was observed. The light weight body of the rocket was composed of aluminum. Rocket rose about 10m with relatively constant velocity in launching test.
