  • The effects of projectile impact system on the transient spray characteristic which is supersonic liquid tip velocity were studied by experimentally. Supersonic liquid jets were generated by impact of a high speed projectile driven by a Two-stage light gas gun. A high speed camera and schlieren optical system were used to capture the spray structures of the supersonic liquid jets. In a case of nozzle assembly Type-A, expansion gases accelerate a projectile which has a mass of 6 grams from 250 m/s at the exit of the launch tube. Accelerated projectile collides with the liquid storage part, then supersonic liquid jets are injected with instantaneous spray tip velocity from 617.78 m/s to 982.54 m/s with various nozzle L/d. However, In a case of nozzle assembly Type-B which has a heavier projectile (60 grams) and lower impact velocity (182 m/s), an impact pressure was decreased. Thus the liquid jet injected at 210 m/s of the maximum velocity did not penetrate a shock wave and fast break-up was occurred. Pulsed injection of liquid column generated second shock wave and multiple shock wave.

  • Numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the effect of nozzle hole geometry on the combustion characteristics of the large diesel engine. 6S90MC-C. Spray and combustion phenomena were examined numerically using FIRE code. Wane breakup and Zeldovich models were adopted to describe the atomization characteristics and NOx formation processes. Predictions on the cylinder peak pressure and NOx emission were first verified with the experimental data to confirm the reliability of numerical calculations. The comparison results showed good agreements within the range of 0.64% and 4.6% respectively. Finally, the effects of fuel spray angle and diameter on the engine performance were investigated numerically to find the optimum nozzle hole geometry considering fuel consumption, NOx emission and heat flux of the combustion chamber wall. It was concluded that the combustion gas recirculation in cylinder by changing fuel injection direction is an effective method to reduce NOx emission by about 10% with increasing fuel oil consumption, 1.4% in a large diesel engine.

  • The intermitternt and transient fuel spray have been investigated from the simultaneous measurement of droplet sizes and velocities by using Phase/Doppler Particle Analyzer(PDPA). Measurement have been done on the spray axis and at the edge of the spray near nozzle at various gas-to-liquid density ratios(.rho./sub g//.rho./sub l/) that ranges from those found in free atmospheric jets to conditions typical of diesel engines. Probability density distributions of the droplet size and velocity were obtained from raw data and mathematical probability density functions which can fit the experimental distribations were extracted using the principle of maximum likelihood. In the near nozzle region on the spray axis, droplet sizes ranged from the lower limit of the measurement system to the order of nozzle diameter for all (.rho./sub g/ /.rho./sub l/) and droplet sizes tended to be small on the spray edge. At the edge of spray, average droplet velocity peaked during needle opening and needle closing. The rms intensity is greatly incresed as the radial distance from the nozzle is increased. The probability density function which can best fit the physical breakage process such as breakup of fuel drops is exponecially decreasing log-hypebolic function with 4 parameters.

  • For a cooling performance research of the combustor operated in a extreme environment of a high temperature and high pressure, we accomplished a cooling performance analysis. Generally a heat transfer characteristic in cooling passage is known well experimentally and theoretically, however heat flux in the combustion chamber isn't. In this study, fluid flow combined with heat transfer analysis is accomplished about a combustor nozzle. We tried to analyze the cooling performance with a heat transfer characteristic of a gas and coolant side in the view point of quantity on the mass flow rate to be supplied to the cooling channel. And finally, evaluation on the thermal safety of nozzle wall material was accomplished.

  • Aerospike nozzles have been expected to be used for an engine of a reusable space shuttle to respond to growing demand for rocket-launching and its cost reduction. In this study, the flow field structures in any cross sections around clustered linear aerospike nozzles are visualized and analyzed, using laser induced fluorescence (LIF) of nitrogen monoxide seeded in the carrier gas of nitrogen. Since flow field structures are affected mainly by pressure ratio, the clustered linear aerospike nozzle is set inside a vacuum chamber to carry out the experiments in the wide range of pressure ratios from 75 to 200. Flow fields are visualized in several cross-sections, demonstrating the complicated three-dimensional flow field structures. Pressure sensitive paint (PSP) of PtTFPP bound by poly- IBM -co-TFEM is also applied to measurement of the complicated pressure distribution on the spike surface, and to verification of contribution of a truncation plane to the thrust. Finally, to examine the effect of the sidewalls attached to the aerospike nozzle, the flow fields around the nozzle with the sidewalls are compared with those without sidewalls.

  • Detailed flowfield resulting from the secondary sonic gas injection into a divergent section of supersonic conical nozzle has been numerically investigated. The three-dimensional flowfield associated with the bow-shock/boundary-layer interaction inside the nozzle has been solved by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with an algebraic and $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The numerical results have been compared with the experimental results for the identical flow conditions, and it is shown that the comparison is satisfactory Effects of different injection pressures of the secondary jet on the shock/boundary-layer interactions and the overall flow structure inside the nozzle have been investigated. The vortex structures behind the shock interaction and wall pressure variations have also been studied.

  • The solid rocket interacts circumscriptively in terms of is many more than liquid rocket. It is uncontrollable than liquid rocket because all part of combustion is decided such as Mixture ratio of propellant, burning time and area. However, production cost is cheap and because authoritativeness security can be easy and enlarge the early speed that follow thrust-to-weight ratio, it is used comprehensively by small size rocket. Considered about nozzle cooling to control phenomenon that burn by thermal conduction in interior wall of nozzle that follow in thrust increase of solid rocket and erosion phenomenon by combustion gas of high speed.

  • A simplified experiment was performed to figure out the atomization characteristics of rice-bran oil which it is highly viscous liquid by applying ultrasonic energy. A spray system, an ultrasonic system, and three kinds of hole-type nozzles(hole diameter: 0.31, 0.34, 0.37mm) were manufactured. To investigate the effects of ultrasonic energy on the atomization of a highly viscous liquid, a phase doppler particle analyzer was used for measurement and calculation of spray droplets data. Nozzle opening pressures were chosen of 3 levels, i.e, 16, 20, and 24MPa. As a result, it could be concluded that the ultrasonic energy was effective to improve the spray atomization when it applied to the fuel by means of 3 different nozzles because of the effects of the liquid fuel cavitation and relaxation between molecules caused by ultrasonic energy. The improvement rate of the spray atomization by the ultrasonic method compared with the conventional spray increased about 15% in the case of hole type nozzles. By increasing of the nozzle opening pressure and decreasing of the hole diameter, the atomization of spray droplets was improved.

  • This paper presents a laboratory experiment on data acquisition technique that applied to the gamma radiation scanning coupled with computed tomography (CT) technique for inspection of broken nozzle inside the vertical vessel. The acquisition technique was developed to inspect a large diameter vessel when suspicious problem location is not easily accessed. This technique allows the installation of gamma radiation source (Cesium 137, Cs-137), and detectors (Sodium Iodine. NaI(Tl)) from the accessible location to the required location and performs the scanning by designed pattern. To demonstrate the designed technique, top opened tank which installed with six cut steel pipes diameter of 76.2 mm (3") at a certain position was selected. They were assumed to be a gas riser pipes inside the vessel. Three studied cases were performed, (a) projection of well installed six pipes, (b) projection of one out of six broken pipe and (c) one of nozzle was assumed to be failure and fell down until one out of six pipes was broken and obstructed by nozzle. Results clearly indicated the capability of developed technique to distinguish between normal situation case and abnormal situation cases.

  • In this paper, a study of Urea-SCR System for Dosing Injector for responding to enhanced environmental regulations has been conducted. There is a limit to the experimental approach due to the structural characteristics of the injector. In order to overcome this problem, The analysis was performed assuming unsteady turbulent flow through computational fluid analysis and the internal flow characteristics of the injector were analyzed. By changing the nozzle shape of the injector, the performance factors of the swirl injector by shape were selected and compared. The design parameters were modified by changing the diameter of the nozzle at a constant ratio compared to the base model. Swirl coefficient, outlet mass flow, and sac volume were selected as performance parameters of the injector. The Conv. model to which the taper was applied showed the dominance in mass flow rate, discharge coefficient and swirl because of the smooth fluid flow by shape. Swirl coefficient, outlet mass flow, and sac volume were selected as performance parameters of the injector. As a result of the comparison coefficient derivation with those performance parameters for comparing the performance of the model-specific injector, the Conv-140 model with the nozzle diameter expanded by 140% showed the best value of the comparison coefficient.
