  • To prevent or reduce air pollutant from methanol fueled vehicles, methanol oxidation reaction was carried out using a heteropoly acid catalysts. Catalytic activities of catalysts have been experimented at atmospheric pressure in a fixed bed flow reactor. Catalysts were characterized by XRD, IR, thermal analysis, N $H_{3}$-TPD and GC pulse technique. Acidities of catalysts were highly affected by poly-atoms. Methanol conversion was much higher on catalyst with W than on catalyst with Mo as a poly-atoms. With the increase of copper content(X) in C $u_{x}$ $H_{{3-2x}}$PMo catalyst, acidity was decreased and oxidation ability was increased. Methanol conversion and product distribution were affected by the acidity and oxidation ability of catalyst. Especially, supported PdSiW(1wt%) catalyst has a very good methanol conversion and C $O_{2}$ selectivity as high as a commertial 3-way catalyst.t.

  • Fabrication technique and performance test of catalytic micro propulsion are treated based on MEMS technology. This propulsion is designed to use hydrogen peroxide as liquid mono-propellant for attitude control of pica-satellite. The propellant is fed into the micro reactor channel and decomposed into hot gas yielding controllable thrust by catalyst. In order to increase the efficiency of the reaction that depends on the contact area of propellant and catalyst, porous surface formation on the channel accompanied by platinum particle deposition has been performed using H$_2$PtCl$_{6}$ solution as a precursor. Several thrusters were fabricated in different concentration of H$_2$PtCl$_{6}$ solution to determine the best quantity of Pt particles. For the comparison of the performance of each thruster, the volume of oxygen generated by the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and the thrust were measured.red.

  • The effects of reaction temperature and precursor concentration on the microstructure and magnetic properties of ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ nanoparticles synthesized as final products of iron acetylacetonate in chemical vapor condensation (CVC) were investigated. Pure ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ phase was obtained at temperature above $900^{\circ}C$ and crystallite size of ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ nanoparticles decreased with lowering precursor concentration. Also, the coercivity decreases with decreasing crystallite size of nanopowder. The lowest coercivity was 7.8 Oe, which was obtained from the ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ nanopowder sample synthesized at precursor concentration of 0.3M. Then, the crystallite size of ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ nanoparticles was 8.8 nm.

  • For the enhancement of the nucleation density of the diamond film, we introduced the cyclic process. The cyclic process was carried out by the on/off control of CH$_4$ flow rate for a relatively short time (10 min), compared with the total reaction time (6 h). Prior to depositing the diamond film, we made the pretreated glass substrate via the unidirectional scratch using ∼l $\mu\textrm{m}$ size diamond powders. Diamond films were deposited on the pretreated glass substrate in a microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) system. We observed the enhancement of the nucleation density of the diamond films caused by the cyclic process. Detailed surface morphologies of the substrate were investigated after the cyclic process. Based on these results, we discussed the cause for the enhancement of the nucleation density on the pretreated glass substrate by the cyclic process.

  • $SO_2$ concentrations in oxy-fuel combustion flue gases increases about three times as high as that of conventional air combustion system owing to the flue gas recirculation for the control of combustion temperature. So the desulfurization reaction is different from that of the conventional air combustion system due to exceptionally high $CO_2$ and $SO_2$ concentration. In this study, drop tube furnace(DTF) system was used to investigate the desulfurization characteristics of limestone in oxy-fuel combustion furnace. The experiments were performed under $O_2/CO_2$ atmosphere to examine the effect of operating variables such as reaction temperatures, Ca/S ratios and inlet $SO_2$ concentrations on the $SO_2$ removal efficiencies. $SO_2$ removal efficiency increased with reaction temperature, Ca/S ratio and inlet $SO_2$ concentration. And the addition of water vapor resulted in about 4~6% of increase in $SO_2$ removal efficiency.

  • Recycled polyol was obtained by glycolysis of MDI-based Polyurethane(PU) rigid foam. The chemical structure of the recycled pclyol was confirmed by GC(gas chromatography) and 1H-NMR. The recycled polyol throughout the glycolysis contained liquid polyol and methylenedianiline(MDA). MDA which could cause liver cancer is carcinogenic material. TWA(Time Weighted Average.) amount for MDA in MSDS(Material Safety Data Sheets) was confined less than 0.1 ppm. The melting temperature of MDA is $92^{\circ}C$, and boiling temperature is $398^{\circ}C$. During the gylcolysis most of MDA was dissolved in liquid polyol. The probability that MDA diffuses into the atmosphere is low but there could be an absorption of MDA into skin. Furthermore because MDA is amine compound, recycled polyol which contained MDA had a difficulty in reaction control of polyurethane. Therefore reduction of MDA amount was needed strongly. In this study the elimination of MDA were performed through deamination of the recycled polyol by glycidyl ether compounds. As glycolysis was proceeded, the amount of MDA was 9.8 wt % at early stage and increased up to 14.0 wt % after 8 hours reaction. It was found that 2-Ethylhexyl glycidyl ether which contains aliphatic moiety was very effective compound for eliminating the primary aromatic amine compound :md the optimal mole ratio of 2-ethylhexyl glycidyl ether to MAD was 3. The final polyol after deamination by 2-ethylhexyl glycidyl ether has an appropriate viscosity(less than 500 centi poise) for polyurethane reaction.

  • The experimental study on the reduction of $In_2O_3$ was performed by using thermogravimetric analyzer. The reduction of $In_2O_3$ was occurred at above $300^{\circ}C$. The reduction rates were rapidly increased with the reaction temperature, whilehardly affectedby the flow rate of hydrogen gas. It was found that the unreacted core model could be applied for the analysis of the reduction data and the rate control step was the chemical reaction of $In_2O_3$ with hydrogen on the surface of unreacted $In_2O_3$. The apparent activation energy for this reaction was 20kcal/g-mol $H_2$ and the rate equation of $In_2O_3$ reduction with hydrogen could be expressed in the following equation. ${\frac{dX}{dt}}=1.6{\times}10^5e^{-20000/RT}(1-X)^{2/3}$

  • Since late of 2000, KIER has developed a novel pyrolysis process for production of fuel oils from polymer wastes. It could have been possible due to large-scale funding of the Resource Recycling R&D Center. The target was to develop an uncatalyzed, continuous and automatic process producing oils that can be used as a fuel for small-scale industrial boilers. The process development has proceeded in three stages bench-scale unit, pilot plant and demonstration plant. As a result, the demonstration plant having capacity of 3,000 tons/year has been constructed and is currently under test operation for optimization of operation conditions. The process consisted of four parts ; feeding system, cracking reactor, refining system and others. Raw materials were pretreated via shredding and classifying to remove minerals, water, etc. There were 3 kind of products, oils(80%), gas(15%), carbonic residue(5%). The main products i.e. oils were gasoline and diesel. The calorific value of gas has been found to be about 18,000kcal/$m^3$ which is similar to petroleum gas and shows that it could be used as a process fuel. Key technologies adopted in the process are 1) Recirculation of feed for rapid melting and enhancement of fluidity for automatic control of system, 2) Tubular reactor specially-designed for heavy heat flux and prevention of coking, 3)Recirculation of heavy fraction for prevention of wax formation, and 4) continuous removal & re-reaction of sludge for high yield of main product (oil) and minimization of residue. The advantages of the process are full automation, continuous operation, no requirement of catalyst, minimization of coking and sludge problems, maximizing the product(fuel oil) yield and purity, low initial investment and operation costs and environment- friendly process. In this presentation, background of pyrolysis technology development, the details of KIER pyrolysis process flow, key technologies and the performances of the process will be discussed in detail.

  • In this study, an improved method for the quantitative analysis of ginkgolic acids (GAs) in Ginkgo biloba leaf extract was developed. The samples were extracted with a mixture of chloroform and 50 % ethanol, after which the chloroform extract was dried and reconstituted in methanol. GAs with 13:0, 15:1, and 17:1 in the extract were successfully separated within 40 min and determined with high throughput performance using an online column-switching HPLC method using an SP column C8 SG80 ($4.6{\times}150mm$, $5{\mu}m$) and a Cadenza 5CD C18 column ($4.6{\times}150mm$, $3{\mu}m$). The developed HPLC method was validated for Ginkgo biloba leaf extract. The validation parameters were specificity, linearity, precision, accuracy, and limits of detection and quantitation (LODs and LOQs, respectively). It was found that all of the calibration curves showed good linearity ($r^2$ > 0.9993) within the tested ranges. The LODs and LOQs were all lower than $0.04{\mu}g/mL$. The established method was found to be simple, rapid, and high throughput for the quantitative analysis of GAs in ten commercial Ginkgo biloba leaf extract and dietary supplements. The samples were also analyzed in LC-electrospray ionization (ESI) tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) - multiple-ion reaction monitoring (MRM) mode to confirm the identification results that were obtained by the column switching HPLC-DAD method. The developed method is considered to be suitable for the routine quality control and safety assurance of Ginkgo biloba leaf extract.

  • Diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems are being used to reduce the particulate matter emission of diesel vehicles. The DPF should be regenerated after certain driving hours or distance to eliminate soot in the filter. The most widely used method is active regeneration with oxygen at $550{\sim}650^{\circ}C$. Syngas (synthetic gas) can be used to lower the regeneration temperature of Catalyzed DPF (CDPF). The syngas is formed by fuel reforming process of CPOx (Catalytic Partial Oxidation) at specific engine condition (1500rpm, 2bar) using 1wt.% $Rh/CeO_2-ZrO_2$ catalyst. The oxidation characteristics of PM with syngas supplied to filter were studied using partial flow system that can control temperature and flow rate independently. The filter is coated with washcoat loading of $25g/ft^3$ $Pt/Al_2O_3-CeO_2$, and multi-channel CDPF (MC-CDPF) was used. The filter regeneration experiments were performed to investigate the effect of syngas exothermic reaction on soot oxidation in the filter. For this purpose, before oxidation experiment, PM was collected about 8g/L to the filter at engine condition of 1500rpm, bmep 8bar and flow temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ Various conditions of temperature and concentration of syngas were used for the tests. Regeneration of filter started at 2% $H_2$ and CO concentration respectively and inlet temperature of $260^{\circ}C$. Filter Regeneration occurs more actively as the syngas concentration becomes higher.
